If you pair that book of exalted deeds with a mutavault you can get a land with 'you cant lose the game and your opponents cant win the game'. 99% of the time your opponents dont have a destory land card and even if they do, you can counter it with surge of salvation. It's an op combo

Just use mono black. Lifegain is weak against removal. However, abiding grace makes things harder for removal.
