I always either soak my pallets or leave them out in a good rain before disassembling them. The wood softens and expands making even the toughest nails easier to pry. You will yield longer pieces as well because the ends won't split and break as much.

I do that also even hit them with the water hose some times its a great idea thanks for sharing. i think the wood seems to hold together a little better when its wet.

easiest way I found: wear good gloves, bang point on ground one side then another a few times till loosened, then stand up on one side and rock back and forth a little more each time, pallet just falls apart, sometimes a slight kick on one board (not enough to crack it) only to loosen it off the 2x4. Denail by hammer or nailbuster as needed.

I hose them the day before, leave them overnight, no splits or threatening creaking, full plank every time, with a pallet buster tool. Nails come out easier/wood is soft so no grab. with a claw hammer. This vid; of course it was easy, is if you want firewood!, which is what you achieved. Nails, top end equipment will work better than the basics that most of us have. Not sure why the woman featured?.

I'm not going to be critical or any of that stuff and I really like this idea, the pallet wrecker is good and i think i will make one like that but i will always have the sawzall nearby just in case. I dont like pulling apart wet pallets even though the wood is softer but unless you stack it on stickers, the wood will warp when it dries. When i do pallets usually its about a dozen at a time so anything to make the pallet deconstruction time shorter and the furniture construction time longer in the shop is a great help. The nail tool you have is interesting, can you source it in a reply, Ive never seen anything like it before.

You people saying to just cut the nails off with a sawzall, what do you do with the twisted shaft left in the stringers? They're a big PITA to get out if they're cut off flush. I'd rather risk cracking some board ends than argue with a few dozen embedded nail shafts.

I’m relatively new to this, so am correct in thinking that the drier the pallet the easier to break it apart ? But then does the wood split more readily ?
@ChrisGagnonDIY
@ChrisGagnonDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Actually I have found that if you wet the pallet with water the nails pull easier. And the wood doesn't break as much but. Most don't recommend it because sometimes the wood will warp and you have to wait until it's dry to work with it.

This is going to sound crazy but I have the same problem. I found that if spray them with the water hose all around the nails then go inside for a glass of tea 20 min come back out then they pull out so much better. bad thing is you have to wait for them to dry before you can use them. What is it with so many "DIY" KZbinrs essentially making music 2x speed videos instead of giving voice over instructions??

Hey, appreciate the reply. I apologise if it sounded like I was having a go at you, I just find it to be a common thing with makers on KZbin, and for those of us wanting to learn/build skills, it makes learning them difficult. I am a visual learner, as many of us are, but having a verbal/oral explanation is also very helpful too! It doesn't have to be overly detailed, either.

ChrisGagnon DIY I was looking for a video that didn’t include a tool. I’m not interested in purchasing one, I needed an idea with things I had on hand. I ended up finding one that was more helpful to my situation.
