There is some in-car footage of Jim Clark driving his old GP car around a track, it has to be the most amazing demonstration of smooth driving at speed that I have ever seen. Keep it up Leo, always a pleasure.

Thank you Leo, your knowledgeable is appreciated. My life has taken a bit of a turn and I had to step away from racing, but it is great to have a resource that can help me keep thinking about staying smooth, relaxed and looking ahead. The lessons and methods I learned in several decades of racing I actually apply to the rest of my life. Thank you again, keep it up.

Seriously on top of Shakedown just being absolutely dope with the new racing knowledge segment, you include one of my favorite clips from Best Motoring, from a man who knows the book when it comes to car control, Keiichi Tsuchiya.

@lookathis As I suggest in the vid, use your peripheral vision as you get closer to the point,. Keep eyes moving to look ahead. Eventually, you will find yourself blending from a fixation on the spots driver [location] to feeling the limits / location [drive by feel].

@bartybaby like I said I was in a go-kart, I've never been on slicks so I can't comment on that, but not all people have the resources to be in a fully prepped race car, so when I'm racing I know a good slide can get the job done if I can't find a good line on a tight corner. admittedly the other down side to drifting is it kills your tires much quicker so that also makes it a no no in real racing as opposed to just spending a day at the track

Leo, I think one of the best bits in the last segment of the Kagi (?) lap was that you could see his feet. While you tend to see the steering wheel action in F1 and WRC, you rarely get to see what the feet are doing. It was interesting to see how the amount of accelerator used going through a corner, varied from corner to corner. More feet!!! That's what I'm saying!
@PAPO1990

@kibcubed fair enough, but rally drivers do go sideways too so there has to be something to it when it's done right. that being said I'm particularly aggressive on track and one day it was wet and I came up with an idea when someone said "there's just no grip out there" then I said "there's grip to be found, even if you find it going sideways" and I went from being one of the slower drivers in our group, to being pretty damn fast (relatively speaking)

@KiwiVaikkoden not all fast drivers, in a car with a fixed axle (or similar) it can be necessarily for one wheel to loose traction to get round tight corners (what you are talking about with shumacer), most race cars now days any significant slide is bad, what I am talking about is throwing the back end out to turn the car not quite as subtle as what you are talking about

great job Leo, I love the driving segment. I don't know why but I have a really hard time seeing the correct line. I always want to turn into a turn early and for some reason my natural response is to be on the inside of a turn. I've been playing forza without the racing line on but it gets frustrating fast. I'll keep on working on it though. Wish you guys wouldn't hype the 1000th episode so much I'd like something to look forward to. John

Leo -- Quick derail: Mixed martial arts is more of a ballet than you think. There's so much technique packed into what looks, to the untrained eye, like an unskilled brawl. It's really pretty analogous to road-racing -- from the outside it looks like whoever has the biggest balls wins, but really it's a big chess match.

@PAPO1990 IMHO, I don't think it has anything to do with speed per se. It could just be that in tight mountain roads, going sideways into a tight turn hogs as much of the width of the road as possible, making it damn near homocidal for an opponent to even try passing you. It may not be that fast after all, but in a race, the slower guy in front of you is still winning. And that's my two cents.

@LeoParente well I give it a go! Granted in heavier lower power cars. Anyway, these last two SDs have been inspirational. Itching to try some amateur racing now, as soon as I'm less poor. @thebossisheretostay Well, cool!! Thanks. It's all about managing the weight transfer / no letting the nose pop-up out of control / keeping the car evenly balanced. When you get the feel and get good at it, you realize you can move the weight around the car by HOW and WHEN you work the brakes, gas, and wheel.

@KiwiVaikkoden you kart too? it really is great fun (but you better have an electric start kart or you might stall), but when I want to be fast I can only do it on 1 corner, only ever been in the rain once, but it's also great for new tyres when they have that slippery layer on top but then you have to be careful not to go right 'round

@bartybaby some corners on the mountain were too tight to be able to maintain any speed, even in a go kart there is one corner I am yet to find a good line through without loosing all my speed so I slide my tail out and get on with it, and I still tend to be faster than most people on the track (admittedly if I don't get it perfect I am worse off) my point is yes a good line is where you should start, but is some rare cases stepping the back end out just right CAN be faster

Great episode again. Still want to see tech stuff. LSD,ABS,TC thoughts? I feel vindicated. Nice to see.. soo-chi-yo (sp?) pulsing the throttle on tsukubas first corner just like I do. No "don't get on the throttle till you don't have to come off" nonsense, it doesn't *always* apply right Leo? More ego stroking when I realise that I've basically figured out late-apex cornering without reading about it somewhere. It goes against the GT racing line but always gets me good lap times and good passes.
