Fat Biking Fire Island, New York

Had to get out and ride today even though it was windy and raining. Decided to ride the beach thinking the trails would have been too muddy. This was my first time in Fire Island and my first ride using my Gimble.

Hey, I’ve got a Cannondale Fat Caad 1 with the lefty fork. I haven’t ridden on sand yet. Do you find that it messes with your drive train etc.?

+rbrtgary Yes it most definitely does. You have to clean the drivetrain very well after a sandy ride. That or just plan on replacing the chain, cassette and chainring often.

I knew I wasn't crazy. I used to take flight lessons out of Republic about 7 years ago and we would routinely fly over fire island during training flights. I swear I once saw a school bus driving over the sand but no one ever believed me.

Hey is it harder to pedal on the sand? We just moved to the beach and I have been looking at these and just wanted to know!

Yes. Definitely harder then on the road. Watching the tides and riding during low tides will help. It's all fun though. Thanks

Hey how wide are your tires ? Also what width do you recommend for riding on sand ?

814chappy these tires were 26x4.7. my current tire is 27.5x4.5 and the 27.5 tire is better on the sand. Thanks
