Dormie is (I think) the scottish equivalent of the French word dormer which means "to sleep" and is pronounced 'dormay' If a player is (say) 5 up with 5 to go he is dormie 5 because he can 'sleep' or at least take it easy for 5 holes and will probably win or at worst, halve the match.

I tried to play there once during horse fly season. I ended up dumping a whole bottle of deets on myself after hole 2, but it did not help. Horse flies are def a devilish insect. I packed up my shit and went back to the hotel after hole 4. I went back and played a month later when I was back in the area for work.
