Fatal Fury (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Takara's 1993 versus-fighter for the Super Nintendo, Fatal Fury.
Played through as Terry Bogard on the default difficulty level.
I never much liked the first Fatal Fury, to be honest. Even when I played the arcade way back, it felt like a poor man's Street Fighter II (and on the Neo Geo, I would've taken World Heroes over it any day). It wasn't a bad game, it just really didn't do anything that other games hadn't already done better, and the three playable characters in single-player was a bit of a slap in the face. It played well though, with easy to pull of special moves and a nice flow to the action.
The SNES port gets a lot of it right. The sprites are a bit rough looking but colorful and detailed well, and the music doesn't really intrude. The flow of the game feels different, though. The command inputs aren't as responsive, the special moves commands were changed, and it can be painfully particular about timing - you won't be pulling off any effective rapid-fire weak punch or kick moves here like SF2 allowed, and the move priorities seem a bit goofy. The game is also amazingly hard, like most SNK fighters. I'm good at owning the CPU on the default, but any higher and the game hands me my own ass pretty quickly.
Fatal Fury 2, Special, and 3 were all very good games, but this one else really does feel like a stepping stone to great things without ever really being great itself. At least the 1991 game set the stage for SNK'S amazing fighters that came later! Fitting that it was originally called Fatal Fury: King of Fighters!

NintendoComplete You should try the 2nd game on Genesis. It's faster than the Arcade release, it lets you do combos, the supers are simplified, the bosses are playable if you push down on Mai and hold the Mode button (And keep moving right while still holding it), and theres this dipswitch menu that you can access with a code (You can flip the 3rd switch for juggle combos)

That juggle combo and speed thing wasn't necessary to the game, it really made the game feel less close to the arcade, hurting the experience. Yes the turbo option helped for Street Fighter II, but then again, the arcades experienced the Turbo version first, so it made sense to port it to home consoles at the time. Leave the juggle combos to MK, not Fatal Fury.

I never knew about the original game…so I never had anything to compare it to. Even then I knew the sound in FF was bad…my cousins and I still played it and had fun regardless.

The problem with this port I believe is Takara didn't understand the sound chip of the SNES. The Genesis used a Tried and True yamaha FM synth that most Japanese companies were accustomed to, while the SNES was a different beast entirely. I still remember hearing Geese's theme on the SNES (Known as "Geese ni kattakori") and I wanted to weep, it sound SO FUCKING BAD!!! Not to mention the controls had a delay on this port but the graphics were nice but that don't mean shit if the gameplay sucks (Which it did). Stick with the arcade and Genesis port for a decent time. I advise to stray away from this port.

The Genesis port is pretty piss poor in it's own way, matter of fact even the arcade versions nothing to write home about. Fatal Fury 2 on the other hand, SNK went back to the drawing board, and it shows, far, far better game in arcades, and even the ports at the time.

Hell, you think that's bad? The VS Mode only allowed player 2 to select from the full roster, while player 1 was stuck with Terry, Andy, and Joe.

@@diobrando-qv3uv All the ports from Neo-Geo to SNES/Genesis had noticeable compromises, they were objectively watered down versions of the originals, but that makes sense as the Neo-Geo was an expensive arcade board/home console where a single cartridge could/would cost as much/more than the competitor's console.

I rather play Fatal Fury Special (NTSC 32meg!!), it's without a doubt the most accurate and complete SNK fighting game for 16bit home consols. Fatal Fury 2 on Genesis is also funny but not arcade accurate. Even the AES original of Fatal Fury isn't good.

The worst offender of this port is the lack of dual-lane playfield, it's THE characteristic that mainly differentiates Fatal Fury to Street Fighter...

To be honest, I think it isn't really a poor man's Street Fighter II like you mentioned in the description because both games were in development around the same time. Fatal Fury is more like (and is meant to be) a spiritual successor to the first Street Fighter games since they share the same creator who left Capcom shortly after SF1. It was just unfortunate timing that it ended up having to compete with SF2 which is indeed a better fighting game.

This game isn't all that great, though it started a fantastic legacy. None of the home ports were all that special for this one either, a damned shame. Thankfully Fatal Fury 2 came along, and the series really took off.

That's the way it often goes. The first game in a series, or the first season of a TV series, is often the weakest (all exceptions aside). Then the 2nd comes along and that's when it "really takes off". So, what makes the first in a series so interesting to warrant a continuation?

Probably the characters, SNK may have had a plan on seeing if they could popularize Terry and crew, and succeeded with the second game, as it is fondly remembered. At least King of Fighters (due to the first ever 3 on 3 format) and Samurai Shodown had a hell of a great showing with their first games, but then again KoF built off of Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting.

Interesting fact, I first played the Genesis version in 1996, but didn't try the snes version until 2012.... I was shocked at the difference. Despite its clear technical inferiority and two missing characters, Genesis version all the way just for the sheer depth of gameplay!

I want to be honest. This port is a sack of crap. The controls are bad, the sound effects are awful, the music is poorly done, there's no plane shifting and the game doesn't recognize Double K.Os. No matter who go down first, the game will still consider the CPU the winner of the match. Graphics are ok. Overall, the Genesis version is way better than this.
