I too found this just as Morten found; as a further note I follow Morten's KZbin channel as well, now I have just added this 'County Deer Stalking' to my viewing pleasure. Thank's very much for this video and the explanations of the decisions that have to be made.

County Deer Stalking fantastic. Keep up the good work. I think you show what the deer stalking community and the country people in general are all about and the good we do.

Hi Peter, great video and the right choice of Buck for sure, having just completed my DSC1 I wanted to discuss the shot placement. I understood the placement of spine shot to save the running off that a heart/lung may have created, but does a spine shot not need a follow up for dispatch ? or does it sever the spinal column and kill fast ?
@peterjones4442
@peterjones4442 Жыл бұрын
Sorry, I never got back to you on this did I. Provided you've just gone a little high on the chest and the trajectory passes within the rib cage is a fast killing shot with no follow up shot required. The problem is if you go too high and touch the top of the shoulder without causing a bleed. In truth this is why I usually just go for a standard heart/lung shot. Thanks for watching.

Great decision on that buck peter! Maybe a chance to take both bucks if they were further apart and using a 243 but that’s debatable
@tchadwic82
@tchadwic82 4 жыл бұрын
Dominic Johnson out of interest why do you think using a 243 would have made a difference ?
@Doncorleone44
@Doncorleone44 4 жыл бұрын
Timmy smaller faster round ! I think the deer has less shot reaction also with a t8 mod there isn’t much noise compared to 308
@tchadwic82
@tchadwic82 4 жыл бұрын
Dominic Johnson on a deer this small even a 22.250 will take it off its feet when hot high shoulder. The noise differences between a 243 and 308 is negligible so a 243 wouldn’t have made a jot of difference.

Hi Dominic, my regret is that I didn't take the first buck when the two animals were stood further apart, that might have resulted in the second buck being less alarmed.
@Doncorleone44
@Doncorleone44 4 жыл бұрын
Timmy I wasn’t considering a high shot! I was simply making the point that a 243 is a smaller caliber travelling faster with less weight than a 308 so potentially it could travel through the deer with less impact ! As regards to a 308 not much more noise than a 243?? Uve shot too many shotgun shells pal. I’ve shot plenty of deer with a 243 and I’ve found it to be the best caliber for every deer species except large fallow bucks large sika stags n red stags! That was my point

How old do you think this buck was? Did you look at the teeth? It looks fairly young, but winter cote might be confusing.
@peterjones4442
@peterjones4442 2 жыл бұрын
Its difficult to be precise with age and so it is better to distinguish Roe by age categories, Yearling, Young, Middle Age and Mature. It was a while ago now, and I usually take a look at the teeth at the time. With hind sight, I'd guess a few years old, so based on the above categories I think you are correct, 'Young'
@janmikolajek
@janmikolajek 2 жыл бұрын
@@peterjones4442 Thanks. It is never easy to decide if this is very promising yearling or poor 2 year old buck. Either way young bucks are rarely aggressive and tend to "hide" in the time of rutt. In my eyes, I would let this one live.

Very nice and informative video. I can only agree, that culling the poor bucks must be first priority over shooting the big trophy, at least if you want a healthy population.

There are 43 different Police forces (Constabularies) in the UK and they all work at different speeds, the Metropolitan Police are usually the quickest with a typical turn around of around a month or so.

I have to say, whatever that contraption is that you are shooting would draw a big chuckle here in South Dakota ranch country. You'd have to trail a mule to haul it because it would wear your horse out. Are you obligated to shoot off sticks? If so, it doesn't do much to help young folks develop their skills in the 4 classic positions.
@peterjones4442
@peterjones4442 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, 'don't knock it till you've tried it' in fact the shooting sticks are extremely light weight and give you as stable a rest as though you were shooting off a bench, so are very popular in the UK and Europe. Perhaps you should give them a try they are brilliant for standing shots. At any rate, thanks for watching.

@@peterjones4442 When we have deer or elk hunters, we ask them to show us their skills In using the 4 classic military positions. We establish maximum allowable shooting range ( for most people, it's less than 100 yards with a standing offhand shot.)These skills are ancient. Stuff like sticks is just a crutch. I see people all the time that are totally unable to use these positions without a crutch. Most guys who come out have no idea that a proper sling is a stabilizing aid. Most of the time I shoot a 1974 Remington 600 Mohawk in .243 with a 1.5 to 4 power Leupold. I can smoke a big whitetail or nulie right in his tracks with a 225 yard standing shot. Neither sticks, nor high power scopes are necessary. In fact, one of my pre 64 Model 70 rifles is in original configuration, no optic at all. I can hit a paper plate at 300 yards with a prone shot. I hike 3 miles on our National Forest every morning. We have a 700 foot elevation rise in a half mile. I get very winded, then I practice my shooting. This makes all the difference in the World. In our terrain, carrying anything but a lightweight rifle, binoculars and your day bag results in a miserable day of dragging all that apparatus through the jackpines.

I cannot understand why a spine shot was it accidental ? as nobody would purposely take a spine shot to drop a deer on the spot . If you hit the spinal cord any animal will drop on the spot but its a nasty shot paralysing the animal , not to mention meat damage , or have I got this wrong do you mean a neck shot .

@@jamesjames4844 Seriously James & Lee? I am sorry if you disapprove, have you never placed your shot a little higher in order to drop and kill the animal on the spot instantly? I've found it to be a fabulous way of getting the same result as a neck shot but without reducing your margin of error so much at longer ranges.

It was an intentional spine shot. Hunters have been taking this shot for AGES. You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about. Another modern “ethical” hunter that cries about shot placement. But obviously has never hunted enough to know the truth.
