People who say that this is "too bland" to be a proper haute-couture show obviously does not know the concept behind that exact facet of tailoring. Haute-couture is not about grandiosity and ostentation. Rather, it is about showcasing old-world techniques that have long been forgotten with the advent of machines. If you have seen any films about Dior's couture making process (I recommend Dior Haute Couture Passage N° 5 and Dior and I) there is actually a lot of work that goes into it. Although Simmons's designs vary from Galliano's, with the most obvious difference being level of drama, the ateliers put in an exorbitant amount of hours into making each couture pieces. There's a lot of details here that might not be so obvious but this is pure art. From Raf Simmons's vision, to the premiere's hand-work, to the tailor's pleats and folds, as well as Maison Hurel's embroidery and Maison Lemarie's plumes, this is couture at its finest. Sure, it doesn't have the romanticized Dior that we've come to love from Galliano, but there are technical skills present within each look that are inherently couture. Take looks 1 through 5, for example. The silhouette is that of the "New Look," but it has been edited down. Okay, what's so special about that? Well, Dior's bar jacket relies heavily on a padding attached to the waist called a basque which was pioneered by Mr. Dior himself. The technique requires a golden hand and an exorbitant amount of fabric to hold its shape. Simmons has edited down and distilled the look but he was still able to attain the same silhouette. You'll notice that the jackets and dresses moves in this sort of brilliantly contradicting "structured-but-soft" manner. Looks 31-34 required new printing techniques on fabric to attain its color vibrancy. You see, part of haute-couture is about advancing fashion through the creation of new techniques while also honoring old-worlds skills. Simmons has successfully combined old and new and, for me, that is the very definition of modernity. Lastly, stop comparing Galliano and Simmons. First and foremost, this is Christian Dior's house and codes. Galliano and Simmons interpret it differently and inject their DNA to the house. Galliano makes a lot of references to the past while romanticizing it which has the desired effect of transporting us into what was. Inversely, Simmons, who has commented that he thinks that the future is more romantic because it is the unknown, transports us to what could be. Both are brilliant in their own way.

What i love most in Raf's design is that the dresses move well. As you said, they are tailored but has that lightness. This is very evident in Jennifer Lawrence's Oscar gown..when it was in the 2nd couture show, it floats!

It's fashion nobody cares about a technique, everybody cares about the superficial stuff. If you don't bring glamour stay at home with your sewing machine.

The one and only collection by Raf Simons that I really liked. I have always thought how amazing it would have been if this collection had been showcased at Avenue Montaigne... All those classic bar jacket reinterpretations coming down the stairs...
