Your music collection/library looks really impressive especially with the addition of all those reggae albums/releases. Harry Mudie amongst my favourite reggae producers, his Rhythm Rulers - rhythm section built some wonderful rhythms that has stood the test of time...Great video.

Thank you...I've had some Harry Mudie productions on CD for many years but been trying to gradually pick some up on vinyl when I can. Underrated producer who seemed to put a lot of quality into his music...

Love that intro each and every time. Good morning Doug. I am super busy. I am way behind on videos. I am just tuning in with this one and I am going to have to watch the rest later. I will recap {hopefully} later on this evening. But first. I am going to check out King Culture Presents: A Special Tribute to some of the Top Sound Systems. Does this mean bands or actual sound systems? Hmm. Now that I re-read my comment I am thinking that it was very stupid and ridiculous ~ Rob/Boston
@FatCityVinyl
@FatCityVinyl Жыл бұрын
Cheers Rob - the Special Tribute is instrumental dub tracks named for some of the famous sound systems from Jamaica. Which are mostly unknown to the average listener but all had their followings at the time and still retain a certain legendary status today. There are fans who preserve and treasure recordings of the actual dances in session (caught on cassette at the time and now digitized), sometimes you find the DJ's and singers in a more relaxed and improvisatory mood than you would on studio recordings and it can be neat to hear some of the exclusive songs played. But I digress, the KC album is strictly dubs of several iconic rhythms that would have been heard in those dances of years past. Catch you in your other comment ~

I do enjoy what I have of King Tubby's work on CD. Interesting to hear about the folks from the Toronto area - I'll have to go back and see if any feature on the Toronto To Jamaica comp I've got. Great stuff as always Doug! Cheers, Tom

That Jamaica To Toronto comp was put together by a friend of mine! An essential look at the Canadian scene but King Culture's catalogue was unfortunately not included (but ideally should have been in there), I think KC has been burned over the years and prefers to handle his music himself, for the most part. There is a lot of bogus King Tubby's stuff out there and it can get tricky determining who mixed what after all these years but the general consensus seems to be that the Mudie dub albums were personally mixed by Tubby himself. Thanks Tom, appreciate you checking in!

Lovely records Doug. I just found a copy of Sly and Robbie's Reggae Greats. You can't go wrong with Harry Mudie - I love the strings when they come in. Also been listening to a lot of Glen Brown productions recently. Love how quirky some of his records are. Reminds me of a slightly more lighthearted Keith Hudson at times. Have a restful weekend. All the best, Steve.
@FatCityVinyl

I used to see the Reggae Greats series about but don't think I ever picked one up...even the Sly & Robbie solo & tandem records from the late 70's/early 80's which used to be cheap are seldom seen in my area anymore. Wishing now I had picked those up when I had the chance! Such a nice balance the Mudie productions had - "light as a feather, heavy like lead" as someone described them, quoting Bob Marley on Misty Morning, and that is just the perfect summation. I've been dipping in and out of Glen Brown's productions of late particularly as I work on my DJ series, he seemed to catch several of them in an early and formative stage. Yes there is something similar between him and Hudson isn't there, but more of a comic or playful side to Glen's music. Cheers!

Thanks Kit...yeah I forgot to include some sound clips from those King Culture records last time and people were curious to hear them...so I thought I'd oblige this time...haven't heard that brand new one anywhere else so far, not even on Discogs yet and the only sound samples I can find online are some short promo videos on Facebook...the King Tubby/Harry Mudie In Dub Conference Vol. 1 is such a classic but not super well known outside the reggae and dub lovers crowd I think...best regards...

I still have vivid memories of seeing 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' at the cinema when it first came out, on my birthday with school friends. The bit that has really stayed with me is the scene where he pulls out his gun and shoots the guy with the spinning sword - the whole cinema exploded with laughter and my friend Greg was almost doubled-over in his seat. Some deep vibes emanating from those King Culture offerings; lovely artwork on display as well. Don't know the name Harry Mudie at all. 'Money in my Pocket' has a great chunky groove and sound. Those phased/reverbed rim-shots are so distinctive. Notable that so many ganja-joints are on display in this instalment... I reckon Indie would have struggled to escape from that lumbering boulder had he imbibed all that smoke. cheers Doug!

I saw it in the theatre as well and everybody cracked up at the swordsman scene - such a hilariously inspired bit of comic relief. I always felt a bit bad for the poor bloke, he'd obviously spent years honing his craft only to be defeated so ignominiously! Deep roots & dancehall vibes from King Culture indeed - was just listening to another of his vintage productions today, by a harmony duo called the Uplifters. One day I'll have to do a proper spotlight on KC, I've accumulated a few nice bits from his catalogue now. Still one LP by him I'm looking for that is tough to find and expensive! Harry Mudie never had any crossover hits I don't think, so no particular reason you should have heard of him - though ideally he should have, given the fairly commercially pleasing sound he had, with a nice balance of sweetness and an underlying rhythmic toughness. His productions are well regarded among reggae fans, I think someone was asking me for a spotlight on him recently. Might be tough as I've only a few pieces of his music on vinyl, with some more on cd-r. I hadn't reckoned on all the ganja references - I scarcely notice it anymore tbh, the imagery is so prevalent. Yes, poor Indy's reactions might have slowed down if he had partaken, and he might have met an unfortunate end munching on those poisoned dates before the monkey could 😂...cheers James!

The Rosie B 'Money in my Pocket' was excellent Doug. I really dug it. I know that some of them were from the one and only King Culture which I thought was super cool of him to do. It is not only the VC collectors and about that are appreciating your channel. Even some of the artists are discovering what you are sharing/showing. You are being recognized for your historian like qualities when it comes to reggae appreciation. >< I have a quick question on the Harry Mudie Meet King Tubby In Dub Conference Volume One. Does the 'In Dub' on that one just mean that its all instrumental? I can never tell the difference between dub beats versus reggae beats. Can you explain that to me in short? Excellent fifth spinout Doug. Always enjoyable~ Rob/Boston
@FatCityVinyl
@FatCityVinyl Жыл бұрын
Money In My Pocket is the original vocal (first done by Dennis Brown in the 1970's), the Rosie B cover version is a nice rendition I must say, haven't heard of her before this. I have had a few artists or their family members leave comments on my videos in the past - always especially gratifying to see that they appreciate their music and histories being shown and talked about. A big reason for starting my channel in the first place. Yes, the Harry Mudie album is all dubs mixed by King Tubby. Meaning he has created instrumental remixes (with extra reverb/echo/studio effects etc.) of previously recorded Harry Mudie productions. In short, reggae is the music, dub is a remix process applied to it by a studio engineers(s). Hope that makes it clear, it is always a bit difficult explaining these things succinctly on camera. Thanks for watching once again Rob, take care ~

That was quite a haul from King Culture. I liked the clip from Sanchez. His voice reminds me of someone but I can't place it. I like Harry Mudie's motto and his willing to experiment. The use of popular culture and movies sounds like an interesting publicity avenue for reggae artists. Great Spinout.
@FatCityVinyl
@FatCityVinyl Жыл бұрын
It was certainly quite the haul, I still cannot quite believe it. Sanchez has been around since the 80's, a very prolific singer with an instantly recognizable voice and tons of hits. One of those artists who is going to fill venues wherever there is a Caribbean or reggae audience but is probably all but unknown to the mainstream. Strings were sometimes overdubbed onto reggae records in the UK in the 60's and early 70's to make them more commercially viable, Harry Mudie was likely the Jamaican producer who experimented with them the most. He achieved a nice balance between heavyweight bass & drums with the sweeter textures of strings and the sound must have intrigued and inspired King Tubby. That Raiders album came just at the opportune moment when dub LP's were catching on to a wider audience with those colourful, pop culture referencing covers. Thanks for watching, cheers!

@@jtsrecordroom3963 I think the scene was just percolating around then but was really kicked off by flagship V.I. reggae band Midnite who relocated to Washington D.C. and began releasing albums there in the late 90's/early 00's, also touring relentlessly and building up a word of mouth following. After that came many further artists like Pressure, Dezarie and a number of others...something of a golden age for V.I. reggae in the early years of the new millennium, I still haven't investigated it all that deeply but it did earn quite a large following worldwide...

I did really like the sound and feel of Money In My Pocket. The music was easy to follow and had a heck of a beat. Always love getting a sample on music like this. King Tubby was a busy guy mixing stuff. Jazz fan, that is a fun fact. Great update as always Doug.

It is based off this classic hit from the 70's Steve, the 12" single is in my collection - such an iconic and recognizable melody: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJWthaCAfbaYfas King Tubby did not mix as much as it might seem, he had apprentices working under him so usually it all just got credited to him (sometimes as King Tubby's, in the plural) whether or not he actually mixed it himself...I think it is widely accepted that he did personally handle the albums with Harry Mudie, something about his productions intrigued and inspired Tubby as a music fan himself. Apparently he had a nice batch of jazz records in the studio. Thanks for tuning in and have a nice weekend Steve!
