He is a crit support of sort. He is good for spamming Elementary my dear which offers a sizable crit up to your team. Furthermore, his NP also allows your team to bypass enemy defenses while also lowering their defense as an added middle finger to them. He is a little selfish as none of his skills are made to benefit the team aside from his first skill which seals NP and grants a load of crit stars. TL;DR: Sherlock is a mix of support and damage who shines when facing enemies who like to stack defensive oriented buffs, or on crit teams. However, he is not the best in either regard. If you want damage, go with Amakusa, if you want a support tank, go with Jeanne

To add on to Karna's reply, to mitigate his selfishness in a team comp, get an aoe support servant (either np aoe or party support skills like charisma). As Sherlock's np screws enemy defense, it's up to your support to take the damage up to eleven from there on. Helena caster is an example of damage support since she has card performance buff, star guarantee buff+np dmg up, and party np percent gain. Gilgamesh works as well since he's able to be a crit Servant, provide charisma, and his np overcharge is np damage up. If you want to double down on support, Hans for heals, atk+def+star gen and crit damage is a good choice with Sherlock to melt hp so long as you have the dedicated crit Servant and the crit stars for it. For fun, Kiritsugu on team to put taunt on Sherlock to take advantage of ruler class advantage. Both Servants are selfish in skillsets, sure, but it's food for thought that makes use of Sherlock's defenses rather than his support. Tldr: party buffs will help you further melt hp bars with Sherlock's np.
