Hey sorry i have an off topic question. Where do you safely leave your RV if you drive away to go somewhere while boondocking? Me and my GF are going to be temporarily living out of an RV for a while and we both work away from home so If we are boondocking and we both leave for 8 hours our RV is just going to be sitting somewhere unattended and that makes me uncomfortable. Help

I am onboard with the Berkey. Not the noise pollution. The Champion propane/gas 2000W generator is 1/2 the price of the Honda and is already set up for propane. It is efficient, quiet and dependable.

I bought and love the 3 qt instant pot. I use it while boondocking with a 2000 watt inverter and solar with no issue. I love to put it in the sink on travel days and let the engine feed the batteries while it cooks a roast.

We only bought an Instant Pot because we found several reviews by people living off-grid saying that the 3-qt worked well on their solar systems. Finally had a chance to test that a couple of weeks ago (we are usually stationary and have full services) and watched the inverter and solar monitors the entire time. So cool! Definitely worth the purchase for us, since we can cook meat in a fraction of the time without using propane.

Yes, I highly agree. I'm saving up for a Berkey, though. It's amazing how minimally one can live. Gave my generator and microwave that came with this camper to my niece and nephew for their rig. Just more weight to cart around and never used either of them. I mostly dry camp and have no solar. I do just fine and having less is truly freeing. 🌲❤🐶😽😻❤🌲

We have the mini instant pot. We love it for driving days in particular. We fill it with chicken and some sort of sauce... pasta sauce, salad dressing etc and lots of veggies like mushrooms, onions, carrots etc. We bring it up to heat and let it cook for a minute or two and then unplug, wrap it in a towel or blanket and throw it in the trunk and keep driving. An hour or so later when we reach a good stopping point (e.g. pretty beach) we haul it out and lunch or dinner is ready. It works so well, not much energy (the mini ones take less watts AND less to get up to pressure) and because we turn it off and let the residual heat and pressure cook it it does not take much at all. Also because it is smaller it makes a better size meal for two and fits under our sink easily. I made a reflectix wrapper for it. It also means we spend less time standing at a stove when we could get to our destination sooner because prep is so easy and we don't have to actively cook.

So cool! I bought a little thermal bowl to use in a similar way. I made Mac and cheese recently by pouring boiling water over the elbow Mac and let it set for 39 minutes. I had to stir the mac twice. Added the gooey cheese pack and sprinkled some pepper in it and it was great. I had wrapped it in big potholders, but I would like to make a wrap for it. I have some reflectix.... I will look for a mini Instapot right now!!

Exactly - the 3-quart is perfect for an RV with some solar power. For example we can poach a small hen at high pressure for "0" minutes (Amy+Jacky recipe), and of course all those soup and stew recipes and one-pot meals. The ceramic pot is easy to wash. Where there is a will there is a way :-))

What I love most about the mini Duo Instant Pot are two things: One, no smells inside the vehicle when cooking (if expecting a smell, can vent the steam outdoors) and second, put it in the pot and forget it. Pressure cooking does the cooking all by itself while I go do something else. I have a larger Instant Pot and the Mini Duo, and definitely I can't live without the very efficient mini-duo (perfect size for cooking for 2-3 persons).

We also nixed an InstaPot. Takes up so much room, and we boondock often. We don't have solar, so we weren't going to run a generator just to use an electric pot. We lived in a high altitude city for 25 years, and camped in the mountains often, so for many years I have used a stovetop pressure cooker. You can cook meals just as fast as in the Instapot, and also use the pot for regular cooking. My lid fits a large 6 quart pot and a small 2 quart pot, so it is very versatile. If you are only preparing a small amount, it comes up to pressure almost immediately in the small pot. I have had this set for 25 years and have only replaced the lid gasket once. I use it frequently and would replace it without hesitation.

I recommend checking out Wyze cameras. For the price you can't beat them. Even to try out. Least expensive one is $25. I have not used them with a hotspot but have never had to reconnect them to my network since I purchased two of them over one year ago. They also have door / window / motion sensors and are just launching an outdoor model. All works via app on your phone.

Love my Berkey. Took a plane trip last year, I had to get the little travel Berkey bottle because I feel safer with that water. I have Wyze cameras. However, they are powered by electric. I've been using them for over a year now, no dropping the wifi. However, I have not traveled with them. It sure gives peace of mind while I'm working on the park office & I can check on my pets in my RV. I keep a thermometer by one so I can check the temps. Had a d'link camera. It had to be constantly reset. I got tired of it & disconnected it. Also, have bluetooth speakers. A small shoebox size that I use to watch my YT vids. Gives much better audio. A nice Harmon Kardon round speaker that doesn't take up much space & a sound bar for my tv. All those I pretty much keep inside though. Also have a 3qt InstantPot. Yes, they make good chili & great pot roasts!

We just received our Nimble Pet Device which monitors the RV Temp, Humidity, & Power that transmits to an App on your phone with a 4G link that comes with a monthly or annual subscription. It is USB powered that comes with an AC adapter, but we plug it into one of our USB receptacles since we do a lot of boondocking. If you lose the USB power, a battery backup that runs for up to 48-hours sends a push and email notification as well if your temp and humidity falls outside your preset ranges. It is a great device for when we are out hiking and the outside temps get warmer or colder than expected. One quirk is we have to reset the temperature limits when we travel since we have a travel trailer and the internal temps of the RV can climb to over 100 degs in summer. Other than that we are enjoying testing it out and will have more to report later. I wish it was included with a camera that would help of see how Stella is doing, but at least we are alerted if temps and humidity become unbearable or if we lose AC or DC power depending on how we have it connected and/or if someone messes with our battery disconnect switch. -Dave

1:00 In Germany a single room 5000 BTU window AC is made which uses around 500 W of electrical power... It is called the Kapsul Noria... It is small is size (20x22x7 inches), not too heavy (40 lbs) and it looks cool too... 3:13 Somethings granny's way is the best way...I the kitchen Granny's way as a tendency to be just that. For example: instead of a power consuming (quite a lot i understand) Instant Pot you could go the hay box route. A simple box (or a little room in one of the cabinets and some drawer sliders) in which a easy to make (some sewing skills are involved though) pot insulator device in which you set a pot with food which has been heated (brought to the boil) on the stove. The pot is kept hot for many many hours and if the box is sized so the insulating device keeps the lid tight to the pot there won't be any spills. The heat can not escape and as a result the meal (which can be anything from simple rice/vegetables to the cheaper cuts of meats to stew) will be cooked without the addition of energy. You need some time though, meats upto 5 hours, rice and veggies obviously less: about 2 hours. Look it up: Wonderoven (KZbin knows about it) 3:35 If you like solar and cooking the All Season Solar Cooker is maybe an option. A reflective diy (corroplast) thing which enables the user to cook with sunlight. Again you have to start cooking ahead of time. Most meals take about 4-5 hours in the sun... 8:45 Do you guys catch rainwater (to filter) ? 11:11 What do the bears think about you making that much noise ???

Mark Cole No, honestly I do not...! I believe that they are both very conscientious and respectful. My only thought is that when we are out there camping, especially in the middle of nowhere and even though there may not be anyone else around... We are still trespassing in the homes of numerous wildlife...! These animals are not tame pets. They are not used to loud noises and/or music thumping away...! These things will most certainly seriously scare them, thus disturbing them and it might even force some to flee the area...! I personally enjoy nature and I’m an animal lover. I never want to be the cause of ever scaring any of the animals that I fight so hard to help protect in the hopes that they will still be around for my grandkids to see and enjoy too...! Honestly, I care about animals so much that I’m more concerned about scaring or harming them than I am about bothering another person... Have a great day and be blessed.

If you haven't tried it already, get a Nano Router that will tether to your hotspot and use the router for your wireless connections instead of the hotspot. You can set up the router for static or let it dish out the connections on DHCP, it may solve your camera connection issue or at least I hope so because I bought those cameras also but haven't made it out on the road yet with them. I have had other issues with hotspot connections and this fixed them. The routers will connect via the tether or wireless if you hotspot doesn't have a available port.

That's interesting that you say the Griddler takes less energy than the Instant Pot. I feel like the IP is a very energy efficient way to cook. I can't imagine getting rid of it. We have two at home and bring one with us camping. There are just so many one pot meals you can cook in it... its so convenient. As for the Griddler, we have George Foreman and like that a lot.

Well, that settles it...the Instant Pot stays home! We seldom ever stay in a RV park, so rely on our batteries alone, and the generator to recharge when needed. We do have a Berkey that we use at our cabin. The water we fill it with comes straight from our lake. Our lake is home to beaver, otter, muskrats, ducks, swans and fish. And used by moose, caribou, bears, wolves...You get the picture. The Berkey filters EVERYTHING out. The water tastes great and after years of boiling, filtering, bleaching...I just pour it through! It's so nice! I have taken note though...I will not park my RV anywhere near you....I love music, but I prefer the sounds of nature to listening to someone else's tunes. Lol! thanks for all of your sharing!-Sue

I've never used a Berkey, but I have an Alexapure that lasts 5000 gal per filter. I can't speak for the Berkey, but although the Alexapure can filter that many gal the manufacturer recommends replacement after 6 months of use. I've used one up to 12 months, and I only changed it because the water started tasting a bit funky. I'm a big fan of gravity drain water filters! Well worth the money if you don't mind the hassle! Keep the filter under around 85-90F or it'll clog up for some reason...

I find Ring to be a pain in the neck too. We have it at home and the battery needs recharging every two weeks, so we got a second one to have it ready to replace--BUT you have to unscrew the doorbell cover to do the replacing! What a pain! Plus if you don't open the app on your phone for 30 days, you get kicked out of the app and have to log back in.

Long before Instant Pots were on the market, I simply used a pressure cooker on my gas stove in the RV. The only difference is one has to monitor the temp for a few minutes and shut it off manually. Other than that...no difference for all the time saving, plus one can use the pot itself as, well, a pot.

I agree about the Instant Pot, but I haven’t the heart to get rid of it for the times that I use it. As for the generator, I sold my Honda in favour of The Car Generator, which takes up hardly any room, weighs next to nothing and hooks right up to my truck. I love it! I also love my Berkey, but wish I had one size up from what I do have. From my understanding though, they are on back order. As for your speaker... holy moly! Take care and stay safe!

Yi Cameras are good, reliable, and cheap. They have a slot for an sd card that will record to the card, and they do have cloud storage as well for a fee. I just use the sd card, and it works for me. When connected to wifi, I can remote into them and never have issues. They are very good at staying connected to wifi, and often give me a timestamp when and if my internet goes down. I've tried momentum (horrible wifi connectivity problems, never again), GuardZilla, which were amazing (Battery, No wifi issues, cloud connectivity, until they just went out of business due to covid). I had a GuardZilla for my outdoor cam, and a ring doorbell, the ring is nice, but the battery won't keep a charge anymore, it's good when it's charged, and the newer versions might work better paired with a solar panel. I am looking into getting a Yi Outdoor Camera to replace the Guardzilla and Ring, since my indoor Yi's work very well. Oh and the Yi cameras I have let me move the camera around when I am connected to WiFi.

If you have any old smart phones laying around, they make excellent security cameras with the Alfred app. You have to put up with some ads on the free version but they are not too intrusive. The app will notify you when it detects motion and will record and hold it for 7 days. You can store and download videos that you want to keep.

Try Blink for Home outdoor cameras. They use 2 AA Lithium batteries, and can be powered by USB. They work great, and won’t forget the WiFi info. The nee Blink XT2 even has 2 way talk, so you can talk to whoever is outside like a ring doorbell. They are about the same price as the cameras you tried.

Propane conversions can be extremely dangerous! The "clean" smelling exhaust can be very misleading. While the exhaust doesn't have the pungent smell of a gas or diesel engine it can produce higher levels of carbon monoxide, which has no smell. Always use a CO detector and place the generator far away from the camper, with plenty of ventilation

Wow that propane conversion kit sounds interesting. Can I do that with an on board ONAN generator? That would rock! My solar isn't big enough to run my A/C and if it is hot I have to run the gen set. Which means it is sucking lots of gasoline per hour. A propane conversion makes sense. Gotta have a Berkey!

The brand new Wyze Cam Outdoor is perfect for this. Unlike the preceding cameras which are intended for indoors, it is waterproof and senses activity via PIR. It is also completely wireless (no power cord) and supports "travel mode" to work without Internet. It is still small with magnetic mounts, so easily placed when you set up camp. It is still inexpensive, but at the moment is sold out (but worth waiting for).
