I’m 60 years old and I lost my father when I was 16 and I still miss him every day. He was more than a father, he was like my best friend. Now being a father myself and a grandfather I’ve always tried to the kind of man my father would be proud of and to be the kind of father to my sons that he was to me.

Okay I am a daughter but this song is universal. I have been lucky to have 2 fathers. One my own, and one my father in law. This is an incredibly beautiful song, recognising human imperfections and how that is part of love and tenderness in relationships. This song is timeless and will be forever.

As a 32 year old father of two young sons who has had them taken away, I've been suicidal for years. I can only tell you two things: Please don't ever blame him for what he did, he's no longer suffering the effects of whatever drove him to do it. Please do everything you can to spread awareness of men's issues and the fact that the number 1 demographic for suicide is white, straight, middle aged men.

Am I reading this song wrong or is it super comforting? I get the message: “things might suck at the moment and there might be plenty wrong in life, but relax... it’s all gonna work out.”
@rolandxb35813 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's not what it means. It's about an estranged father and son, the son wanting to leave the home and go (far) away and the father pleading him to stay. "It's not time to make a change", basically "everything you got" here (your dad, home, life) is better than chasing uncertain dreams. The son being almost bitter about his father not listening ("he turns away", "same old story") and always demanding unconditional obedience ("from the time I could talk, I was ordered to listen"), but not being fair or caring ("all the times I cried, all the things I had to keep inside", and "if they were right, I'd agree, but"). It's ironic that the second time the father sings almost exactly the same words as the first time, just to show that he really doesn't listen to what his son is saying.

My son sent me this song a couple months ago as I am in the process of getting all of my affairs in order and this song really moved me…coming from him. I am so sincerely grateful for the relationship we now share. Despite differences and difficulties we have experienced in his younger years there is and can be such a bond between a father and son when they are now both men. How special is a father and son’s relationship! A song I sent him by Anthem lights “Father and Son” shares my most innermost soul and reflections. I love him dearly and am so proud of the man he has become. ☕️❤️💝

@@teddyiteddy7858 Hey, Ted, i used to think exactly the same when i was at your age. Must confess sometimes i still do. But i'm about 40 now, and so many things changes, our thoughts get deeper 'cuz we saw so many at this crazy world. After we lost my syster to the cancer i saw how destructive can be for parents to bury a son/daughter, it's against nature. They died inside with her, they became other persons, well we all did at last... She left on Christmas morning, and all the family died a little that day. Changed everything to us forever. We all would give anything to get her back. Since that day i changed my stance, before i was inconsequential, bully, fearless, now i keep myself out of trouble, trying to care them the best i can, holding myself up and strong, for them. They couldn't hang another tragedy. Think well, God bless you, and your family, kiddo.

He also sent me a text today, "i'm not doing well" I have not been able to reach him yet,,,,,If the song just wasn't enough to break me, his message surely has doubled that. “Father and Son” (1970), one of Cat Stevens’ best compositions, was initially intended as a duet for a stage musical that never materialized. A conversation, a dialogue, an argument* masterfully performed by Cat Stevens portraying distinctively both characters : the father in a deeper register, the son in a higher one. The producers of “Moulin Rouge!” (2001) wished to borrow “Father and Son” for the film, but the author denied them the opportunity. As a matter of fact, much of the plot of the movie was based on the song, so the whole script had to be rewritten. David Bowie’s “Nature Boy” was used instead. Though it seems to be autobiographical, the piece is not, for the most part, claimed Cat Stevens. In 2007, the singer-songwriter re-recorded the hit under his new name (since 1978), Yusuf Islam. No wonder “Father and Son” became so popular : the topic is fundamentally relatable, universal and timeless, isn’t it? ❤️ 🌎 ❤️ * If each concerned father could recall his own past as a son himself, MANKIND would be better off.
