I think, if nothing else, this episode COULD inspire Twilight to approach Celestia regarding where and how she found a dragon egg. And with Smolder and Ember as allies who may know other dragons, it's possible we could finally get an answer. Or not. I'm just thinking, since Ember was the chief's daughter, if a baby dragon went missing maybe the chief would know? There's potential here. I don't feel the need to rewatch this episode though.

She literally "does not remember" . The "permanent version" of the "de-aging" spell she uses on herself about every 50 years or so to keep her youth (so she could one day see her sister Luna again); it also takes away all of her memories & skills acquired in that period [that "celestial tv room" has footage for herself to see later]. This is another reason why technology in Equestria only started to evolve recently [as it would be impossible for her to rule over a kingdom she does not understand after a few generations]; but she choosed not to do this "erasing" anymore as the return of Nightmare Moon was getting closer.

*Twilight Sparkle:* _"The one-thousand, one-hundred, eleventh year anniversary of when you first raised the sun."_ -> From "Horse Play" [MLP:FiM_S8E07] 1111 (first Sun) - 1000 (Nightmare Moon) - (FiM series) = ~105 to 108? years -> The Applebloom ´s voice actresses "wanted call" for the pilot asked them to do a "sassy 8 years old girl" [so that she was in S1E01; by S8 she is ~14 or less]. Since "the first time" Celestia raised the Sun happened when she was still young (just acquired her cutiemark), before Starswirl´s adventures with the other pilars (that she never met for some reason). I would say 5 to 15 years passed since that moment up to when he dissapeared [enough for the Sisters to still having "essays" to give to him like if he was a university professor]; in that period they also defeated Tirek. -> Add some more 5 to 10 extra years (WITHOUT Starwirl) for them to use the new, pristine Elements to defeat Discord & King Sombra (since the Tree of Harmony was just "a crystal seed" when they got locked in Limbo) Then, Celestia had 10 to 25 more years than when she did "first Sun" when she defeated Nightmare Moon ( she was between 25 to 40 years old ). - - - The spell only takes away the "oldness" and memories/skills up to a certain point [she does not revert all the way back to a filly or a foal] as it would defeat the "porpouse" of it (meeting Luna again) if she does not remember her [not to mention having to learn how to raise the Sun & Moon again would certainly be a problem... The "chosen age" revert point is likely to be as how her body was just after she used the Elements of Harmony to seal Luna on the Moon [aka AFTER when she took "The Choice" to do this for a thousand years]. -> This will ensure her RESOLVE would be the always _the same_ on EACH new "iteration". If Celestia rejuvenates herself up to that point in a regular cycle (one that she interrupted BEFORE taking Sunset Shimmer as her pupil); then the aparent age she has (compared with Luna & Cadance) will make sense. -> It would be interesting to have Granny Smith talking with her about that day she give her family a place to live near the Everfree Forest [this is likely to be something she does NOT remember]. The first time she did this was probably also BEFORE she "unmade" the Elements into spherical rocks and choose to left them on the Castle of The Two sisters. Given how vague was the transcription (in that _non-ancient_ book she recently wrote) that -Twilight- *Pinkie* found in the Golden Oak Library; that part of the story was something she could NOT remember it by herself anymore, but likely a bit that was "told" by her past-self (via the "tv-memory hall" that references Dumbledore´s Pensieve from Harry Potter); as one of those many choices that would affect her future life. Celestia never had children in a thousand years not because she is barren or "lacks interest". . . but because she knew her "Master Plan" would be impossible to execute unless she also prevented anypony from ever trying to usurp her throne [meaning no princes or princesses with her blood (regardless if they are alicorns or not)].

To be honest I think this episode would have been a good opportunity to motivate Spike to spread even more friendship to the dragon lands. I mainly say this because sludge may not be in the minority to attempt this. In the hearthswarming episode smolder literally described this episode in a story about how a starving dragon was taken in by the kind dragon Lord and immediately took advantage and kicked out the dragon Lord to live starving in the cold. She then said that dragons like seeing weak kind-hearted things lose. I think smolder developed more positively than she realized considering she outright despised what sludge did to spike and said that dragons wouldn't do that. It'd speak highly of spike to work even harder to prevent dragons from becoming like sludge or change their ways. Because the show themselves admitted that dragons wouldn't think twice about doing similar before friendship was introduced. The strong prospers over the weak was what they believed.
@equinoxomega36006 жыл бұрын
I wished that it would have turned out that Sludge would truly be Spike's father, but lied about his backstory (he just ran off, once his mother laid an egg or so). That would have made for a nice bait-and-switch and a more satisfying conclusion, if Spike had told him off in favour of Twilight.

The moral I was hoping they were going for was that family is not just blood relations, but those who love, care for and raised you; if for no other reason than wanting to meet his real parents instead of this tease. Perhaps it is too harsh or scary to portray an actual parent who does not have the best interest in, or even care about, their own child. My neighbors growing up adopted a son after they couldn't have more than 3. His parents were ruled unfit as they were neglecting him and using drugs (he actually has FAS from his mom drinking while knowingly pregnant.) When he was an adult, the mother established contact again, only to use him for drug money and ultimately demanded a liver transplant as she'd ruined hers due to her drinking (you can donate half of yours and it grows back, amazingly.) Because he is special needs (due to brain damage she gave him as a fetus) and gullible she actually talked him into it, only to cease contact after the procedure and learning he wasn't rich enough to support her habit. He now refers to his "real" parents not as his bio-mom and dad but as his sperm and egg donors, as that's all they were to him, not what parents are supposed to be.

Spike literally learned this lesson in season 2, Dragon Quest, already. I look at this episode as an allegory for a boy growing up with out a male role model. Spike is, let's be honest, very effeminate, and then comes this older much more masculine person claiming to show Spike the ropes about being ... well a man. Again this goes back to the rather poorly executed dragons are allegories for boys in Dragon Quest. And this is shockingly how gangs recruit their members, they see boys without father figures, offer to be the role and the rest is history.

And we haven’t spoken since 2012 and I think it is for the best because when ever me and my mom’s side of family get involved there’s always drama and fighting. And I really liked yondu’s last word of advice to star lord: he maybe your father, but he wasn’t your daddy, I memorized that advice very well. after my mom remarried, my new stepdad Paul became the best father figure and dad I ever had. I'm of two minds when it comes to "Father Knows Beast": On the one hand, the episode is kind of a bait-and-switch. Being that this is the penultimate episode of the penultimate season and teases the prospect of delving into Spike's origins...only for it to be a fakeout was somewhat of a wasted opportunity. On the OTHER hand, the story that the episode actually told about Spike's relationship with Twilight was well written, humorous, had great character interactions (Courtesy of Twilight and Smolder), and had plenty of heart. Overall, "Father Knows Beast" is a good episode if you're willing to part with your personal expectations and enjoy the episode for what it is and not for what you may have wanted it to be. But, I do think that there should be at least one episode in Season 9 that has a more definitive conclusion for Spike's past.

My favorite part of this episode is all Pinkie Pie's Scenes. Setting that aside, can Smolder's Parents can also be Spikes Parents? Aka, they're Bother d Sister. From every time I see them in an episode together, I somewhat feel that they're somehow connected to each other. Ember is the new Leader of the dragons and as well the first (except for the rest three) Dragon that Spike helped and help him back, like how the new Leader of the Changelings as well. But for Smolder and Spike, I don't see any "helping in a dangerous situation" or something happens that they've become this close to each other. You might say "maybe because they're just the same species so they need to help each other out"...no, as Smolder said and how we saw the dragons are, we know they aren't that friendly and helpful, they're more Destructive and Selfish than Spike. From that, the possibility of Spike and Smolder being related isn't that far...except the time Smolder said that Parents aren't "that" selfish and heartless, they only show it in a different way to make their kids more independent. Even though Spike is raced by a Pony to make him more helpful and friendly, we will see some signs or attitude that came from his real parents, there is a kid that's been raced by a different parent because of the fathers attitude that made the Mother to let her kid be raced by her old friends, the child is been raced with their real kid, being supportive, kind, and even teach them to be more independent because both parents are sick and never told their kids. Even though they've been raced the same way, their attitude are completely different, the real kid is more like their father and mother, kind and helpful in the chores, but the other, have tendencies to prank the others but still helps whenever he/she needs to. I know this isn't a best example, but how 'bout my own life. Me and my brother have the same mother, but have different fathers. I was first born where my grandparents told me my real father just runs away and never came back for my mothers side to race me, so I was raced by my Grandparents at a time while my mother work abroad, four years later my mother got remarried and have another child and still let our grandparents raced us, the new father, whom now I call my "step-father" didn't do the same thing that my dad did. We grew up together like a real brothers but I'm still more mischievous one than the two of us, we were been raced by our real mother when I'm going to grade 5 at the time while my little brother is going to grade 1, we live into our moms place and at a time, I thought it's funny to tease my brother for getting embarrassed for me to see him naked and then in school I called him "gay" while he's in class, this change him and somehow change me to, even though I'm the big brother from the two of us, I'm more lazier than he is more active, he made a lot of friends at his age while I somewhat got bullied by my classmates where now I think I'm also the reason why I got bullied where the only friends I have are kids, at least 4 or more years younger than me, because I like kids so much. Anyway, I'm the most laziest but the most helpful in the house, while my little brother is more social but less helpful in the house, I'm actually in college at my 2nd semester of my 1st year and I'm somewhat antisocial, I actually expecting to live on my own but no, I'm still living with my parents and my little bro, after my 4 years of college I'll might take another degree and probably live with my brother in a new place near his college school. We actually argue on each other a lot as well.

But when he tricked Spike into pampering him, I knew he was a fake! I absolutely Loved Smolder in this episode! She couldn't have been written better! And that plan she and Spike concocted! Brilliant! XD Looking back, she and Spike reminded me of Sultan and Jasmine from that scene in Aladdin where Jasmine believes Jafar has beheaded Aladdin. But that scene where Twilight's heart broke, OH!!! If you didn't feel that, you have no soul! I hope Spike eventually calls Twilight "mom" before the series end. Even if he only does it once, now that this episode sealed the deal that Twilight does look at Spike as her own kid, even if she herself doesn't know it. Or she wouldn't had reacted the way she did when Spike said he finally has a "real parent" in Sludge. Poor thing was just heartbroken by that line, but tried to hide it. After all the stuff Sludge did to Spike, i REALLY wish Starlight would've came back and blasted his lazy, lying, good-for-nothing butt out of the castle. It would've most ideal if mama Twilight did it, but it's probably not in her nature to do it. But Starlight might be willing to do it if she's mad enough. I agree with your conclusions here. I particularly liked the interactions between Spike and Smolder. And that heart-breaking scene was, well, heart-breaking. =^_^= But the real take-home here is the explicit acknowledgement that Twilight did indeed raise Spike, and their relationship is very close to mother/son. I think this is the first such acknowledgement? I can't recall it being explicitly stated previous to this. Though for the timeline to work out Twilight would have been in the area of five or six years old when Spike was hatched, so she likely didn't actually do the primary raising for the first few years. But then memory only goes back so far, and by the time Spike was old enough to remember, Twilight might have been old enough to do at least some of the raising. Another very minor point that has happened many times before but I always appreciate is the fact that ponies (and Spike by extension) automatically use 'somepony', 'everypony', and 'anypony' even when the individuals they're referring to are mostly or completely non-pony. Because Ponies are kinda low-key racist. While it's obviously not good to be racist, it's a nice world-building bit, and the writing staff is consistent enough about it that they must be doing it on purpose.

Why is Spike seriously not getting info if ponies hatched dragons to enter Celestia's school? Is it a case of "Spike was the only one kept after hatching and grew up nice" and if so did Twilight keep Spike by Celestia's word? With this and Spike's actual parents (plus Scootaloo's) we have one of the show's biggest unanswered mysteries. I know the show's canon got heavily rewritten after Faust stepped down, since Alicorn Twi made her original plan impossible, but since they brought it back in S5 it means they didn't out right deleted it from canon. So again, "why" was his egg used for a filly to enter a school if dragons were such an unknown and mysterious creatures? You would had thought Celestia deemed to do...something, but I'll at least say this. She let Twilight raise Spike as a way to closely follow his growth and letting him live a normal life.

My biggest problem with this episode (trope aside) is how they are pointing out how he's not a parent because of Spike's being treated like a servant when Twilight treated him like that for season upon season.
@Gokuvstheworld6 жыл бұрын
Twilight kinda did, but it really looked more like he was just helping her out, not so much being her "servant", and we even saw him feel threatened when Twilight got that owl to make things easier for Spike. She never seemed to take it so far that Spike was serving on her hand and foot, like a real servant might do, while she'd do nothing but lay around the treehouse or castle, or made him sleep outside, like Sludge did to Spike.

I noticed that if Spike 'wanted' to know more about the dragon ways he could always talk to Smolder. But he's clearly more interested in the pony ways. We're all products of our environment. I couldn't help but think of immigrants, and how (on average) the first generation tends to stick to their own ways more, while their children try to act more like their peers, and in turn their children start to try and learn about their heritage. Cultures do end up mixing, and maybe that's what we see here.

I honestly thought we'd FINALLY get to see who Spike's parents were and how his egg ended up at Celestia's school and eventually into Twilight's care. But of course. Hasbro trolled us. BIG disappointment. I think it would be more interesting if Slug WAS Spike's father, and Spike teaches him how to be a good parent. But no, Spike's origins remains a mystery.
@justinriley6 жыл бұрын
While I agree that the premise was kind of a tease, I think the point that the writers were trying to make was that the truth about Spike's parents doesn't really matter. He already has a family.
@genius114336 жыл бұрын
@@justinriley Well, if the intended lesson was that Spike already has a good family, we already had that lesson: Dragon Quest (admittedly another failure of an episode). The problem is, as many other commenters have already said, that this episode was so full of wasted potential. Even if Hasbro simply wanted to go with the angle of "manipulative adult tries to take advantage of Spike," this episode could have executed that premise _so_ much more effectively. Instead of making it so transparent that Sludge was not Spike's father, they could have put the audience in doubt of whether he actually _was_ Spike's father. By making it as clear as crystal that Sludge was nothing more than an irredeemable, manipulative jerk, the audience was taken out of the moment. We were just waiting for the other shoe to drop, and that not in a good way. I for one did not watch the episode in full; I looked through the transcript for most of it. A nice review good Doctor. I’d definitely say that this episode worked so much better than dragon quest in all levels. Both showing spike wanting to reconnect with his dragon heritage, and his relationship with twilight. True anyone that’s seen this sitcom trope could tell from a mile away that Sludge was not his real father. And he’s a bad con artist at that so it makes it even less believable. But there was still good interaction and and character development. I would love to see that episode you envisioned were bid sister smolder takes spike back to the dragon lands and introduces him to her family. I was disappointed at the end of the episode were twilight gives spike permission to go to the dragon lands to try and find his family, but spike turns it down saying twilight is all the family he needs. I understand that that was meant to be a heartwarming reunion between the two. But to me it was the same as in the first episode in this season were the main six recount there movie adventures beyond Equestria and they say “I hope we never do that again.” Inside I’m like “No! That’s so much waisted potential!!!” Hopefully we will get more episodes focusing on spike and big sister smolder. As there kinda getting a rainbow dash and scootaloo dynamic. Only without the idol worship and stalking.

This story is the last episode before the season ends on what will typically be a two part episode, if the show stays true to what they usually do, so any future Spike episodes are either going to have to happen right now, or next season. As with other rather weak episodes in this season (episode 13 for example) if they are meant as a stand alone they are not Hasbro's best, but if they set the stage to future episodes that bring continuity to the theme (such as the suggested Spike and Smoulder show) then they are actually brilliant in their own way. And again, the show is dealing with a sensitive mature theme, adopted children often wanting to know who they are, and the adoptive parent having to deal with the heartbreak that often brings, and is trying to do so in a way aimed at the "demographic". Not sure how well it appeals to a more mature audience, but it is part of the charm that made so many of us bronies in the first place.
@nottakenaway6 жыл бұрын
Rather than being in disbelief, I genuinely believed that Sludge was Spike's father. I also believed he was a lying scumbag. I thought this would be a story about appreciating adoptive families as real families and warning against idealization of biological connections, and the ending, I believed, would have made little difference whether or not Sludge was his father; either way, Smoulder would recognize Sludge as a douche and pull Spike away from him. Even though Spike, and I, ended up being hoodwinked thoroughly, I thought the episode valuable and enjoyable.

For what the story was for the show, it did have good emotions to hit us where it should. For the kids watching this, this is a good first experience to this kind of storyline. And I do hope that either Smolder takes Spike for a trip to the Dragon Lands, maybe Spike finding some clues to his own family, and that we do get some kind of closure with Spike's family, whether finding his real parents alive or just knowing who they were. Heck, fanfiction-Smolder and Spike are siblings XD But I did like Twilight and Spike's interactions in this one, something that I always love to see because they are a great meaning of 'your family is who made you you' and I loved the apology scene too.

I like how they set up and carefully touched on Spike being adopted, especially in light of Gallus' reveal of his 'family' life with the Griffons. More interesting, I think, is that the show touches on the topic of finding a family instead of friends for those who are pariahs. Which is something many bronies struggle with, or at least to my understanding they do.

Yeah, when he breaks the act at the end, it feels a bit rushed. But maybe he was too lazy to keep up the effort when his comfort was really threatened. Then again, we shouldn't talk down to kids, and the movie certainly didn't do that.

I put it up to bad writing at this point. I love that Smolder has been stepping in as an older sister and helping Splke in things like melting, fire breathing competitions, and this. It really shows how she has grown. Or, at least she and Spike are getting to be close friends. This, and with Ember interested in changing her nation as a whole, realizing getting more allies and friends to help and support as a whole, the stronger they are. MLPDethDealr32 I'd say Twilight would be more of a parental sister to Spike than a mother, and what you said isn't entirely true whether Twilight hatched Spike's egg or not through magic, Spike still would've been born it's not like his egg was destroyed or anything. I also can't fault Spike for this, while Twilight has a family of her own that being her parents and Shining Armor whom she deems as her "B.B.B.F.F.", Spike is still an orphan and Twilight doesn't seem to understand that feeling and back in Dragon Quest despite her effort in trying to help him, she wasn't really any help in helping Spike trying to find closure about himself, and even after episodes like Gauntlet of Fire you'd think we get more information from Dragons after Twilight stated she'd get more info about them from Ember after being in good terms with her now for the most part, but we didn't. Even the Apple siblings in the Perfect Pear were able to get full closure about their parents, finding out their mother, Buttercup (AKA "Pear Butter") was actually a pear all along and that they were part pear, Spike is still trying to figure himself out and is still trying to find closure about his draconic side, as he seems to be going through an identity crisis and before you say how Twilight was the one who took care of him, from what I've seen it's the other way around, cooking for her, doing chores for her, cleaning up after her via books, physically acting as her schedule. Spike's always the one supporting her physically and mentally and Spike rarely needs it which is rare unless it's feature in his own episodes, because he comes off as more mature and responsible most of the time, making him pretty much a foil character to Twilight when he's not the victim of slapstick nor when he's featured as the problem in his own episodes.

I'm more like Spike than I usually admit, and I considered this an episode full of competent twists and turns. After that inverse intro about Twilight, Spike and Smoulder, Sludge showing up and showing wannabe toughness seemed to be expected. As such, the 'family' bombshell and bonding time seemed genuine, implying that the twist would be Spike being randomly liberated from a toxic family. When Spike started realizing the wedge with Smolder's help, I didn't think the status quo would completely revert. I guess at first, his stories seemed sufficiently Amy Dunne-esque, but his sloth started poking holes more than the things he wouldn't have witnessed if that backstory was true anyway. I could still see from the beginning he'd make labor out of all of them anyway. I watched, "Can You Spare A Dime?"!

Personally, this episode would probably make it into my bottom list. Not in a bad way per se. But it just didn't work for me. There are very few episodes that I would put on my top 10 least favorite episodes because I hated them. But there wouldn't be enough episodes that I actually hate to fill even a top 5 hated episodes. And coming up on 200 episodes, that's saying something. But after Sludge appeared, it reached a point where there was no way for the story to go in a direction that I would like. If he wasn't actually Spike's father (which was the case), it was too obvious. If he was the father, I just wouldn't like that choice, because regardless of the situation, I can't accept that Spike's father was just a deadbeat dad like that. I also have an issue with the fact that the episode didn't introduce Spike's actual biological parents. I understand that the show wants to play it safe and not change the status quo. But Twilight is now an alicorn princess, the CMC got their cutie marks, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon are no longer bullies, Twilight went from being a student to being a teacher, Rainbow Dash is now a Wonderbolt, former antagonists (though I'd argue that Thorax was never truly an antagonist) saved the Mane 6, everything that happened in the movie to expand the world, Starswirl (as well as the other 6 pillars) were brought back, Twilight running a school of friendship, and now Spike getting his wings. Just to name a few. It seems that taking risks and changing the status quo more often than not results in better episodes. And when the show comes to the status quo of family, the show is too willing to play it safe. I didn't mean this to turn into a rant, and technically I still don't see it as such. But this episodes, in my opinion, has far too much wasted potential.

It would've made things interesting if there was a cliffhanger. But, as of what we got, I was very disappointed with the episode. I did love the moments with Spike and Smolder and how Smolder was teaching Spike how to fly; she was like an older-sister figure to Spike, in my opinion. And Twilight's and Spike's bond is just kind of similar to Dragon's Quest, but I still like it -- even though Spike acted like a brat and dropping everything he learned from Twilight and his own experiences (Looking at you as well, Scootaloo). As for sloth (not even gonna say his real name because he doesn't deserve it) was just an awful character. His actions were predictable and there was no redemption for his actions. (Just like Blueblood and Sven Gallop) I'd say the writers will forget him just like a few others (wishing Diamond Dogs would come back). But my wholes thoughts, this episode crushed any hopes and anticipations I have for any more episodes. When the trailer for the other half of season 8 came out and I saw the dragon say he was Spike's father, I was excited. Finally, we'd get answers to Spike's origin. Who was his mother? did he have siblings? We're they pony-hating dragons just like the others before dragons and ponies became allies? and it had me thinking 'Oh, Spike's gonna be so emotional about this'. I was actually looking forward to it. And when the episode aired... nothing. Absolutely nothing! No answers, no nothing. Spike didn't seem phased by what he heard and for him to openly believe a random dragon over the very pony that raised him was just wrong and hurtful. And it took another dragon to sit down with him and talk to him about what it means to be a dragon. I'll say it right now... Smolder is the MVP of this episode and this episode gave me more reason why she is my favorite student. Smolder is awesome. I give this episode a 3 out 10. It was not good, at all.

The show is having Spike in the adopted child position where they will never learn their parentage. I have always though it was fine to show this kind of story and Spike never learning about his family. But it’s good to address it more anyway like in a episode like this. And how exactly was Spike raised anyway should be adressed. I recall Faust saying it was partly Celestia but this episode and one comic imply it was just Twilight. And Spike and Celestia have never seemed close anyway. But I would like to know more about that in any case. Sludge was annoying character however. He should have at least had a better desing and some redeeming/interesting quality so he would be more pleasant to watch.

I actually wasn't a fan of the way it ended when Spike mentioned the damn pillows. It kinda negated what would have been a heartwarming moment between Twilight and Spike

For me, the episode was just kinda boring, besides that truly heartbreaking scene with Twilight and Spike. It still felt a bit too predictable for my tastes, and really i wanted to see Sludge get his own punishment. It was also rather infuriating to see in some way because I can somewhat be in Spike's shoes. Sometimes I feel like my own parents are using me as a puppet and trying to get something out of me by just keeping me away and especially when my own father makes a mess out of the home and in the past I did used to clean up, but after awhile, I refused because I got better things to do in my life. I can see why people like it, but I also see why absolutely hate it. I can also see the middle ground, although I lean towards the disliking part, but more because of personal reasons.

First of all: Didn't anyone find Sludge's story a little too convoluted? Just, one question Sludge. How would you know about the Princess of Friendship if this was before Spike was born? There was no Princess of Friendship until after Spike was born. So, something is telling me you are more exaggerated for a story teller than say, Edward Bloom. Second: School Raze is on the horizon, and I think the feeling you had for Cozy Glow is going to be explained there. (But don't say that I say some spoilers from CellSpex. Because if you're like AnimeBroMii, then I might as well stay away from her). Third: I just finished my idea for the Story of a game I've been working on. another thing I'd HATED About this episode is that Sludge Dragon character taking advantage over Spike and the other characters even though he's nothing But a Lazy Shumbag who is taking advantage over Spike and he'd didn't realized it right up until the end

I heard there was going to be an episode about adoption this season, and another about puberty. Well, what do you know? Spike had both!
