I would agree. But it was usually simmering just under the surface. He wasn't someone who expressed his emotions much.

I wonder what your dad experienced as a child. I have always wondered why people do evil things. It is hard to believe that they had a normal childhood.

i agree with you. and i do know some of his childhood that would have hardened him. His parents worked him like a draft horse on their farm. if he got done with his work there, they'd' send him to another farm to work for money--that they kept. He had wanted to be a baseball player , and they thought that was foolishness. i knew his parents when I was really little. I don't remember much of them, but impressions remain. His father seemed distant, like in another world. And his mother was very stern. Both were German and very "religious". She made the most beautiful quilts, but as soon as they were made they were put in plastic bags and into a cedar chest. She didn't use any or display any. Each of my dad's daughters got one when we married. I also remember her very icy blue eyes. From my mom's view, they were incredibly repressed and didn't like fun or emotions or anything but work and church. So you can imagine how that would affect spirit. But I still don't know that it accounts for the depth of the darkness that was within him. Like I said, sometimes I think those things are generational-like maybe they accumulate in a family's energy for generations and then emerge. You can't always put your finger exactly on what makes someone who they are, even though you can see some influences. And evil is always hard to understand. I think it goes along with being sociopathic, which I think you could apply to my dad, and definitely to my husband who followed. And when someone is sociopathic they have no conscience at all. And I think since they don't feel normal emotions like joy or love or sadness, instead they can experience some kind of power through evil. Like they don't have real power--which comes from love. But they have a version of it that satisfies them in some way. It's about control. There are some really interesting things written about evil in the Bible (I went to Lutheran school for my first 8 years of school). This is a very interesting one "Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed." John 3:20. Another interesting one is about God creating everything , including evil. Anyway a long answer, and I"m sure i could write lots more because it is a topic there are no definite answers to but lots of interesting things to contemplate.

My dad had a very militant father who made him feel inferior. My dad became his dad and is still reaping the consequences. My father displays narcissist traits. I also found partners who were very similar to him so I can totally relate to you ​@@BelleTolles
