While Citroën were developing the mighty SM they tested its parts by fitting the V6 engine to a shorterend, two-dorr DS and taking it to compete in the Rally Maroc. To celebrate 100 years of Citroën the car was brought to Retromobile Salon in Paris #gwoverdrive

The cost of the SM plus the CoMotor Wankel engine partnership including 500 GS Birotors and a rotary destined for the CX which was launched in 1974 to replace the DS, and a helicopter and a truck company... completely overstretched Citroen financially. They did this before in the 1930s with the radical Traction Avant and the 1950s when they ran out of money for the flat 6 engine to cap of the DS radical achievement... Can you imagine a 6 cylinder DS in the 1950s... A flying Goddess!!!

I had an id 19 it gave lots of trouble but when it was good it was a mobile comfortable living room

Thanks. Didn't think it was possible to put that wide V6 into that narrow space between the suspension, but there it is. Would've made the SM A LOT less fragile with its front end/suspensio hung way out there.

It is not Hydrolastic..that is BMC's version..it is Hydropneumatic suspension..a system that should be on every car today, self levelling and low rising rate...far superior to springy pieces of metal (so caveman). Manufacturers efforts in this field are pathetic for 2019. Citroen had active antiroll on it's 1990's Xantia Activa which out-handled every car on the road.

@@murphymoe606 I drove around in DS Citroens for 35 years and didn't have much trouble with spheres, just need recharging occasionally. The rubber diaphragm in the middle lasted a long time.
