The lyrics of “ im a winged insect and you’re a funeral pyre “ is another way to refer to expression “ drawn to like moth to a flame”. Vessel is a master of lyricism and often uses metaphor. Awesome reaction! Keep up with ST it’s worth the dive!

I don’t know if this already in your comments, but within the moth drawn to flame metaphor, vessel feels powerless. “I’m drawn to you because I can’t not be. It’s in my nature.” Like he’d crawl up in the funeral pyre with the goddess “night”

At the end. The switch from "I will travel far beyond the path of reason", to "I HAVE travelled", and the anger and frustration behind it. He gave up everything to be where he wanted, only to realize he put himself in a hell of his own creation. It's a whole story, and masterfully executed.

You are among the first that I have witnessed dissecting this that has gotten that. It's worth noting this is the next to last song ("Euclid" finishing the journey) of a three album story Vessel felt the need to tell the world. So if you haven't listened to the previous 20+ songs some of the context is lost. 23:20 after listening to Sleep Token for a while I get the feeling more and more, that these songs aren’t actually about someone else, but about himself. The person he wants to be or is or is becoming singing to the person that he was and everything that is holding him back from becoming that better person he wants/needs to be. So the whole moth to the flame analogy could be about him constantly being drawn back to the person he was, and the “grow back your sharpest teeth you know my desire” and “bite trough these wires” could be him wanting to cut the links that tie him back to that past self and break free and needs that old angry part of himself to grow it’s teeth and sever that link, that his self sought furry can’t bring back the past, put it can cut a way forward for him to break free

A few have mentioned the interpretation of an insect drawn to the flame of a pyre. I would take it one step further: throughout the 3 album trilogy there is the question of who or what is Vessel writing about. The theory that the subject being referred to as Sleep, is a representation of a lost love who has passed on. If that is the case then a funeral pyre even hits harder as this is the burning of the body of his lost love that he still cannot let go of, and is continually drawn to, and burnt alive in their flame. Note: Vessel is the main songwriter, vocalist, guitarist, bassist, and keyboard and pianist on the all ST albums. ii is credited with songwriting and drums.

Loving the discussion! Interpreting the lyrics right or wrong is still what it’s about! Keep in mind vessel will also sing certain parts a specific way to match the lyrics. Hence the ending he’s no longer asking nicely , he’s asking in anger to take him back to when things were peaceful, Eden. Subbed !
@nicholaslowe42542 ай бұрын
I absolutely love how you worded this…”he’s no longer asking nicely”. I wish I was able to articulate my feelings and thoughts like this. If someone were to ask me what I thought how about the screaming part at the end of the song, all I would be able to spew would be “I really, really like that but don’t know why”. 🫡
@artylols2 ай бұрын
@@nicholaslowe4254 I have seen way too many reaction videos to be able to come up with thoughts and interpretations of his music. But I have 100% picked up that vessel will sing or scream a specific way for a specific reason. One example; in the song ‘higher’ he sings ‘you only need the melody, I only need the silence’ but sings ‘silence’ in melody. So simple but so creative.

Lyrics with ST are all subjective. Mainly focused on a toxic relationship, but with whom? This song had me in tears the first time I listened to it on a reaction channel that I can't even remember which one now. I gathered something else totally from the lines : " I guess it goes to show, does it not? We've no idea what we've got until we lose it. No amount of love will keep it around, if we don't choose it." I had just a month earlier lost one of my fur babies of 14 years in a sudden and horrible way. A month prior, my youngest fur baby who was blind drown in the pool that he never came close to because he was scared of the water unless I was around. These two incidents happened for no reason within a month of each other and broke me horribly. Bring in that lyric of the song that I was enjoying and I lost my shit. I had to pull over and get it out of my system after about 10-15 minutes. Grown ass man crying in the side of the road over words. Vessel was talking to my soul at that point and Ive been hooked every since. I get chills every time I hear the song now. It's not my favorite anymore as I've progressed to the next painful spot of reliving past shit in my life but it's def top five. It's helped me push on and try to get closure in a lot of things I didn't know I left unfinished. Love these guys. Bloodsport is my achilles now.

You should really dive into the 2 previous albums. During the 2nd verse when the rap part starts, I think you guys were talking about it at 13:14 or so, "I spit blood when I wake up, sink porcelain stained, choking up brain matter and make up..." its thought to be a reference back to a few other songs chokehold, missing limbs etc. which are songs that describe the grip this person had on him. The TMBTE album as a whole is thought to be Vessel's way of finally being past the toxic relationship and coming to terms with how everything ended up being. Start with Sundowning then listen to then This Place Will Become Your Tomb THEN come back to Take Me Back To Eden. All the call backs will make sense. Especially in Euclid. Loved seeing your reactions.💜

Thank you so much for this video! I’m the type of person that listens to and loves music for the music. I very rarely pay attention to lyrics (even though I can sing along with most songs I’ve heard) but not because they aren’t important or because I’m trying to dismiss the songwriter’s work. It’s because I love the feel and vibe that the musicality brings and how that ultimately makes me feel both physically and emotionally. You guys breaking down your interpretation of the lyrics really opened me up to a new way of consuming music. For all the reasons you said, plus some of my own that are personal, this song has a MUCH LARGER and more impactful meaning to me and it is currently bringing me to tears. I am a ST fan. I really appreciate the dialog this song has created and agree that it is open for individual interpretation. I agree with some of the other comments suggesting this album being part of a trilogy. Even this track, towards the end, uses lyrics from one of the earlier songs on the album. My interpretation is the songs are about a toxic relationship. He knows it’s toxic but he can’t resist. He’s addicted and wants more but the other person only comes around when they need a fix, takes what they want, then leaves again. Some of us have been in or know someone that’s been in similar toxic relationships. With other people, with the past, with ourselves. It can become very ugly. Thanks again for the commentary. I've liked this song for a while, but then I went through a bad breakup. The words hit me like a ton of bricks. He did not choose me in the end. I was drawn in like a moth to the flame. I interpret this song as wishing you had never met this person. Eden was before you met them and realized how bad love and heartbreak can hurt. To me the song is the emotional journey of regret over letting a toxic relationship happen. All relationships are lessons, and I have never regretted meeting someone before this person. This song hits hard.

I love the take that this song is about Adam. He had to follow her request to eat the fruit because he’s so obsessed and in love with her. As he was created to do. She ultimately led to his demise. Like a “moth to a flame”…winged insect…. All he wants is to go back to Eden. Where it was so perfect he could barely breathe.

I believe the refrence to choking up brain matter and make up is his ability to put to words what's on his mind while keeping up his persona of vessel. Choking up brain matter is his words on paper and him choking on his words as he sings "spilling his guts for us to see" per say

Dude straight up looks and sounds and has the same demeanor of the sous chef who trained me. Straight up uncle you didn't know you had vibe. I bet this dude runs that grill 😂 subbed. Glad yall like it. Sleep token has become my favorite band. Vessel wears his soul on his sleeve. Idk who hurt him. But...low key I'm glad it happened. Now we got this magic.

That was too funny!! But I feel the same way! I'm sure it was a sucky time in his life but to transmute it in this way is crazy! It's a masterpiece so far!

The only 2 people actually in the band are Vessel and II (the drummer). So Vessel did all the Keyboard and Guitars.

Not just a moth to a flame, but the attraction causes the wing insect to draw in and his wings burn up and plummets to their death. It's a metaphor for an attraction to destruction.

@@UncleTrebor What makes Sleep Token so special is they impact people so hard for different reasons. Me personally, I'm happily married with a 5year old and I kind of go into momma mode when I FEEL Vessels hurt. I wanna give him a hug and tell him it will be alright 🥺. If you've listened to Atlantic, you know. If not, you must share it please.

I believe that the first couple of lines of the rap verse are a reference or call back to the lyrics in their song "Nazareth", mainly the second verse. Don't want to spoil it so give it a listen and see if that lines up for you guys, but understanding the whole lore im pretty sure it links up pretty well. Loving the videos!

If you haven't already, sorry, first-time viewer, dig back into Sleep Tokens discography. They are solid consistently, turning out amazing music. My first was Jaws in 2018. Right now, Aqua Regia. I can't stop listening to it right now. ~Worship

Take me back to Eden= take me back when things were pure and I had peace. One has experienced a loss of innocence that they can't get back and slipped into a "death" in which one is trying to find there way back to some form of sanity.

Fun fact: For the studio tracks, Vessel plays all the instruments except drums. ii is the BRILLIANT drummer (check out his Drumeo interviews, he has 2) and for live shows, Vessel does piano, but the bassist (iii) and the guitarist (iV) work those. but iii and iV are just for the lives. Vessel writes everything except for drums.
