The John and Mary bit is recalling a time when the parish priest used to be a figure of some importance, when he'd call around to houses to see how people were doing. Every household wanted to present a picture of perfect domesticity, so a false air of sweetness was usually to be found. Similarly, John and Mary can't stand the sight of each other and are actually attacking one another, but as soon as one of the local priests shows up it's all sweetness and light!
@newuk262 жыл бұрын
Also divorce had only just been legalised in Ireland at this point, so you had couples who hated each other but were stuck together
@Quessir2 жыл бұрын
@@newuk26 An excellent point! Catholicism had such a staunch hold over the people for so long and it was all starting to come apart in the 90s, with scandal after scandal emerging. Father Ted came along at just the right time and gave us a chance to laugh at it all, long-held beliefs that were just taken for granted and just the silliness of the pageantry and ceremony of it all. As well as portraying a surreal yet also truthful version of an Ireland that was quickly being left behind.
@@cloverfield911 Probably goes for every family. Perfect domestic bliss whenever someone is visiting, then letting the facade fall as soon as they've left!

Watching this you realise there's a few things we haven't been introduced to yet that you would be forgiven for thinking are the mainstay of a Father Ted episode: Father Dick Byrne and his crew, the phone call to that priest that's always at an inopportune moment, Father Jack settling into his four word vocabulary.

What happens in this episode is called the "Streisand Effect". It's when you complain so much that something that would have gone unnoticed becomes popular. It's named after Barbra Streisand. She complained online that Google Earth could see her house. And because she complained about it everywhere she could it became the highest Google searched item that month. Had she never mentioned it no one have bothered. hahaha

Big flaw in the writing during the Cluedo bit; asking for cards that you have in your own hand is actually a valid tactic and is allowed under the rules of the game.

@madgeordierob78906 ай бұрын
@TheOrlandoTrustfull Yes but it's still a valid tactic. You can do it regardless of which cards have already been shown. It narrows down your opponent's choice of which one to show if they have more than one of the ones you're actually looking for.

Guys you would absolutely love Porridge starring Ronnie Barker it is set inside prison and is a British classic. The whole series is amazing and they made at least 2 movies as well. When you have space it would be great to see you both react to it & as it popular you should get good viewing figures. There is even a documentary on KZbin called Porridge the best British sitcom.

I don't know how true this is (because it was a long time ago), or whether I am remembering it right, but decades ago I was having a drink with my dad where I live. A local catholic priest, who was a friend of my dad, was talking to me (he'd had a few holy spirits down him). He stated that a lot of Catholic priests watched this programme because it was so close to the truth of how they live. I've never been a priest, but as someone who has worked in the IT field, I know that the 'IT Crowd', another piss-take comedy, is very accurate to how IT people work or think. So maybe it could be true!
