Some more Nightwish I see. They have a huge following. Symphonic metal is very popular. Shoemaker a tribute to Dr. Eugene Shoemaker (April 28, 1928 - July 18, 1997) , founder of Astrogeology Science Center. Eugene Shoemaker was a renowned geologist, a founder of planetary science, and also known for co-discovering the Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 along with Carolyn Shoemaker and David Levy, and the first man to be buried on the Moon. While visiting an impact crater site in Australia, Eugene and wife Carolyn were in an accident that caused his death, after which his life-long dream to go to the Moon was realized: on January 6, 1998, the ashes of Eugene were launched aboard NASA’s Lunar Prospector mission to the Moon, and he was buried near the south pole.

Your son is right - they are from Europe and they are a mega band there and in South America. There's no way they'd be touring mostly in the US if they were bigger there, that's just American arrogance. I don't think their schedule would change at all, only the venues and cities. In the summer they tour all over europe. Summer festival season is very important for every band. About singing: Tuomas' original idea was atmospheric music, but Tarja singing style changed everything. The music was built entirely around her style. It was all luck, really... ------------------ In 1996, Tarja was on her Christmas holiday in Kitee. "I had spent the semester in the church music department of the Sibelius Academy in Kuopio. It was a really cold day in Kitee. Tuomas rang our doorbell, I remember him wearing a green parka and combat boots. He modestly told me he wanted to talk to me about something. He had brought a couple of cassettes with him and asked me if I could maybe listen to them. The music turned out to be really beautiful." Tuomas remembers that Tarja immediately agreed to join the band. Having no clear idea on the vocal melodies, Tuomas basically gave Tarja the task to figure them out herself. "There were three songs on the demo, and one of them was called 'Nightwish'", Tarja recalls. "Tuomas gave me the lyrics and backing tracks and said that he had a certain melody in mind, but I was welcome to come up with my own interpretation." At the time, the goals were not set too high. "The whole thing was supposed to be just an experiment - we'd record a demo and maybe sent it out to some record companies", Tuomas says. "There were no plans whatsoever to play gigs or to aim towards anything more serious. Tarja figured it would take maybe two days for her to sing the songs in the studio." "Tuomas called me and said that we have a vocalist", engineer Tero Kinnunen recalls. "I remember the Saturday morning we sat there waiting for her. A car pulled up to the yard, and out came a woman wearing a fur coat. I thought it was some granny in her thirties, but then I saw her face and noticed that it definitely wasn't the case. I believe Tarja was 17 or 18 at the time. The Huvikeskus studio in Kitee wasn't anything like it is today. The control room was in the theater, so we set up a mic there and started recording." Tarja went through the vocal melodies with the boys, and when the time came for her to start singing, the guys' jaws dropped to the floor. "It was such a shock for us when she first started to sing", Tuomas thinks back with awe. "I thought we were going to hear a clear, young, beautiful, girly voice in the style of Kari Rueslåtten or something - instead, Tarja had a high-pitched, bombastic voice that was already very dramatic and classical. She surprised us completely." Once Upon a Nightwish: The Official Biography 1996 - 2006

Ah, that makes sense. I made the connection with Shoemaker-Levy, which was the comet he discovered that impacted with Jupiter a few years back, but I was wondering why the video featured the Moon. According to Wiki, he was a geologist, killed in a car accident while visiting an impact crater site in Australia, and some of his ashes were carried to the Moon with the Lunar Prospector mission in 1999.

I must admit I don't know much Nightwish aside from what you guys react to on your channel but they have all been really great. The nearest bands doing 'symphonic and/or power metal' that I know a bit are Rhapsody Of Fire, Stratovarius and Dragonforce. They all have male vocalists rather than female but there' are lots of 'iddly-widdly' guitars🎸🎸and fast double bass drums involved!🤘and I think you might like them Rhapsody Of Fire - Rain Of Fury (2019) // Official Music Video DragonForce - Through The Fire And Flames (Live) Stratovarius - Black Diamond (''Tuska Open Air'', Helsinki 11.07.2003)

Stratovarius is a legendary Finnish band that had a big influence on Tuomas (keyboards, composer). The songs on the second (Oceanborn) and third (Wishmaster) albums show a lot of Stratovarius influence. From the fourth album, they moved strongly into "film music metal".

What a great reaction! There's nothing like Nightwish to get you all fired up and all enthusiastic. You're right, the American market is important for recording artists because it's a large market in the language dominating the global industry. So it's always been a thing for UK artists to break into the US market, because that's how you make the big spondoolies. It was always more impressive when Scandinavian TV dramas sold in the UK market, a market up to 12 times the size of some countries, and in a different language (so we watch with subtitles), than a UK production selling in the United States, about 5 times the size and in the same language (almost). What's disappointing is that a lot of TV productions from Europe generally don't sell in the US, and are often just licenced to be remade into a US version. Not sure how Nightwish would work if they recorded in Finnish or Dutch!

Hi Dave. Just wanted to stop by and express my heartfelt condolences to you and for all the people in the UK and Commonwealth realms. @@MarissaM312 - hello gorgeous! Thank you for the beautiful message. I have the GBNews channel on the TV all day normally (I'll be watching the Italian Grand Prix highlights later, of course) and it's all just constantly on the latest developments. Main event today is the coffin has been moved to Edinburgh for a few days. Trivia note: she's the first British monarch to die in Scotland since the 16th Century. Funny thing, as someone pointed out, the Royals seem to be the only people working at the moment (no politics for a change!) as the funeral arrangements and Charles taking over as King seems to be moving along very smoothly, because it has been pre-planned for a long time. Just remarkable how the Queen was still performing an official function (taking the resignation of a PM and appointing a new one) just 48 hours before passing. She never futzed around, did she?!!! Interesting point made - ALL the details will change - like coins, notes, stamps will have the King's head facing left instead of the Queen's head facing right, post boxes (if anyone uses them anymore), 'C III R' for Charles III Rex will replace 'E II R' for Elizabeth II Regina, but... none of the fundamentals will change, because the monarchy is all about continuity. Listmaker posted some instagram pics and a video tour on our DM this week showing the 'studio' dismantled :-( but it was actually a corner of the master bedroom, and he has claimed another room in the house as his new office (one of the other kids has moved out). You might be interested to know that E has "allowed" him to keep the Pink Floyd gold disc you sent, so he has that in his new office, all the other stuff she has kept in her own room or in storage, and some she's taken with her to college. Hope everything is good with you and your part of the state of Tejas? Hope to see you on F&S (when Ethan gets a round tuit again) and some of us stay in touch by DM on Instagroom, if you feel so inclined to join us. Best wishes Marissa!❤

Great discussion between the two of you about Nightwish. It is a shame that Nighwish don't have as much support in the US as they do in Europe (for one thing, it means you don't get the grandure of their full stadium show that doesn't work in a theatre venue). Is it possibly the case that the sophistication of their music doesn't fit so well in the US? Even American bands with more sophisticated sounds and song structures don't have the mass following that some other metal bands have - Dream Theatre, Symphony X, that kind of thing.

@@fatherandsonreactions It is the same thing here in europe. Metal bands do not get played much in the radio. The public mainly focusses on main stream bands with typical 3 min radio compatible songs. I love the argument about why and where Nightwish tours! I would add this little point there: Why would we assume Nightwish would decide their tours motivated by maximal profit? One could argue that their chosen path goes against that. I've had the impression of them making decisions based on other factors as well. I have this feeling that many listeners find Nightwish. Nightwish doesn't find as many, like in promotional sense. Rather than actively creating a new market, by reaching out to the audience unknowing of them, Nightwish would keep doing what and how they are doing things. Of course Nightwish has done traditional promotional stuff but it's way different than the more "brute-forcing" type of aggressive promotion or selling out to reach new markets etc that happens more in the "mainstream". It's essential to realize money to be A factor instead of THE factor. This seems to be the difference of necessity and corruption 🤔 This kind of motivation at least in higher doses would transform the music to serve the money and Nightwish would be something else 🤔 TLDR: I think organizing based on max profit argument doesn't really feel 100% Nightwish :P

Sometimes, I have a tendency to prejudge music that's new, or music that I've never heard before, telling myself it's not my cup of tea. It's in those instances that I stop, back off a bit, and purposefully give the music a chance. This is definitely one of those times. When I actually listen to this, I'm not only impressed, but I'm taken to wonderful artful places. The wonderful sound this band produces, and they fuse some great genres with fantastic results : I find myself embracing opera, theater, musicals, classic rock, synthesized light shows, and many other things - all while immersed in this tension-filled and (almost) historical cosmic commentary. This is very unique and very interesting. And thank you guys for a great reaction. I appreciate Ethan's Insight into the vocal and instrument combination - I agree, they go together well ! 😊👍🎶 I really liked your reaction today! I'm looking forward to the next one

I think the problem for Nightwish, and for most bands of their kind, is that they are neither commercial nor middle of the road. Radios like to play in safe areas. Nightwish are never safe and are highly unpredictable in what they do. That's what makes them a progressive band for today. To me, it seems Shoemaker becomes pure opera in its final part in order to fit the mood of a lunar funeral. The Latin " Laudato Si Ad Astra" means "All praise be To The Stars."
@Mischnikvideos
@Mischnikvideos 2 жыл бұрын
The special thing about Nightwish is not the contrast between the band and the singer. This is typical of Symphonic. What is special about Nightwish are the unexpected twists and the high technical level. Nightwish doesn't really have bad songs. But some that could have been written by any other band. Metal was strong in the US in the 90's with Metallica, Trash and the NuMetal. Since then, he's degraded there a lot because nothing came after them. There is probably a lack of independent networks and perhaps also the space for subcultures. The blacks have these spaces, I don't take them seriously with the whites. And metal used to be more of a white music. That seems to be changing in recent times, however. Europe has more independent labels and more amateur metal bands in Central and Northern Europe. The interest in metal and the infrastructure is just bigger. Nobody discusses whether you hear the devil if you play the record backwards. Touring is more difficult in the US. Europe does not have a Midwest with its great distances. It's practically just the west and the east coast. Today's EU is half the size of the USA, but has a third more inhabitants and is correspondingly densely populated. Significantly more people live in the west than in the east.

It's totally off topic, but you can see and hear that the young guy is looking and sounding more like a man now. 🙂About Shoemaker: it's one of my favourite Nightwish songs. The lyrics are great (it's about Eugene Shoemaker, whose ashes are on the moon), and the vocal melody is not that easy. It's jumping, it's quick, a lot of words, and a lot of difficult jumping notes. Floor said that she had to work hard to get it right and I totally understand. And that last operatic part... Amazing. She's delicate and powerful at the same time which is very hard to achieve while singing in this style. It's so much easier to just go with full force opera on the high notes. It's much more difficult to remain delicate and light. And she does it perfectly!

Fun Fact: If you don't know yet: Tuomas introduced the band to the demos for the next record and brainstormed about it. After the current tour you want to go into the studio. After the tour, however, Floor also wants to do her already booked solo tour and record her own record. That gives clashes. I keep waiting for her to take Auri as the opening act. Then the problem would be solved. Marko got in touch and said that he had mental problems since 2010. Because of this and because the constant traveling annoyed him, he left the band. Now he would be fine with new treatment though and if beaming is developed he might come back.

"After the current tour you want to go into the studio. After the tour, however, Floor also wants to do her already booked solo tour and record her own record. That gives clashes." Nonsense. After the tour, Floor does solo work, others do what they do. Next summer they will go to studio, which have been already booked. These things have been mapped out long time ago.

@@ValtteL Yes, you're right, but it's all done very tightly. Floor's tour runs until May 19th. There isn't much room left until summer if she also wants to go on vacation. There will probably not be any additional concerts. Nothing can go wrong there. Tuomas usually takes a year after the tour and then he can make an Auri album. But he already did that during the pandemic, added a black metal album and is presenting the new Nightwish record in the middle of the current tour. The pandemic has messed things up a lot.

@@Mischnikvideos Nightwish last show of the tour January 17th, Jakarta. Floors solo tour April 11th - May 19th. I'm sure she have atleast couple of weeks off after her solo tour. Pandemic messed up their Human Nature tour and they adjusted. When next summer comes, they'll be back in the old familiar rhythm.

@@ValtteL Summer begins in June. That's not long after the tour ended. I guess she has exactly a couple, two weeks. She can't stay at home any longer anyway ;-) They won't be back in their regular rhythm next summer, but when the tour is over after the next album. So in three years, when the regular break is back. They then worked on one piece for over four years. It is possible that the next tour will therefore have larger gaps than usual.

@@Mischnikvideos I think you overthink. When they go to studio, what's the difference, lets say to when they went to studio to record Endless Forms Most Beautiful - Nothing. After studio work is done, they release it and back to road, like they always do. They don't need to completely catch up with the rhythm they would be in without the pandemic because there is no point to do that.

You wanna hear a bad Nightwish song? Well, maybe not a bad SONG actually...just some bad singing by one Tuomas Holopainen. Yes, you read that right...Tuomas actually sang on a few songs on their first album (which was actually supposed to be a demo, but the label released it as their debut album). I do like the first album, even with Tuomas' singing...I actually found it to have an innocent, quirky charm to it...but it's not what would be considered good haha! Here is Astral Romance (kzbin.info/www/bejne/farUkpWNismEe7c). Cheers!

Their album Human Nature (which this song was from) was kind of a miss for me. Definitely my least favorite album of theirs. For me it lacked the major twists and turns we’re all used to. Additionally, they also really under utilized Marcos vocal capabilities in this album. Idk if that was intentional with him leaving the band or not. Regardless, it’s still good music. The ultimate album for me would be an album like Imaginarium with Floor on vocals.

I thought Shoemaker was the artist. I was ready for you to react to a band I never heard of. Nightwish doesn't have bad songs? Really? The one you didn't like as much as others was probably the only Nightwish song I liked even a little bit before today. Actually, this song was actually pretty good.

As already stated, your son is right. Typical speaking about money, while they’re not in for the money….. America was the source and land of milk and honey for good music. They lost it totally. It’s many years the source for cheap commercial garbage. The sad thing is, there’re new refreshing bands out there but they won’t get airtime even in their homeland. What I don’t understand is that radio is still so influential. Americans seem to use little internet to find things (like new and great music) outside their country. The great stuff is coming from Europe and Asia. Seek and you shall hear and experience…….

They kind of suck guys, the lyrics mostly suck, the voice is dramafied, they have talent but nothing for a play list for me. Glad you enjoy them. It's like a paintings, you like it, love it, hate it or it just kind of sits there unnoticed. Lets just say I don't hate them. Keep up the great reactions, always love to hear what you like and what you're thinking about the music.

What exactly do you mean by 'Nightwish is new'? I don't think 1996 is that new. Fact is that both in Europe and in th US Metal is a subculture that has no (or hardly any) airtime on mainstream radio. Mainstrem radio focus is on 12 to 20 yo becauseadvertisers like to target 12 to 20 yo people. And metal it is just too difficult...song are long, complex, have deeper meaning and Cristians still believe that it worships the devil. It really hard to program a 24 minute song in a show that has adds evey 10 minutes (not including the mandatory product placement.)

Nightwish is pretty new compared to rock bands that have been extremely successful in the USA. The Who, The Beatles, Rollin Stones, Queen, etc are all over 50 year old bands haha! Even most metal bands that are mainstream started in the 70s. It’s a shame that Nightwish’s promotion team doesn’t focus on the US. They could be bigger -Ethan

@@fatherandsonreactions Of course you can say that, but if we are pragmatic and analyze things - they would burn money like crazy because they would need to broke the whole US music bubble and that's not gonna happen. They have been very patient with US market since early 2000s. Radio is such a central part of everything and there are gatekeepers who want to benefit financially. In europe this whole thing works totally differently - radio and music videos are not too important. It's basically all about the live shows. Those opener spots are hot thing for up'n'coming bands and of course if you tour with Nightwish, there is a great chance to impress and many bands have done that. The whole US music industry issue is very frustrating, european bands have known this about 20 years. It's just very hard to break because you had to do it natural way, not doing campaings like politicians. There are tons of YT reaction videos where US metal fans talk about this topic, they understand and know details much better than me. Message has been always the same - how ridiculously frustrating it is.

@@fatherandsonreactions and add to previous message: Nightwish's first european tour was 1999. The opening band for Rage's (German band) 1999 European tour. Nightwish was so good and their reputation grow super fast that in the end had lot of gigs when 2/3 of the audience leave after Nightwish gig was over. Germans weren't too happy and they had little bit akward tension going on 😀 Next year they did third album, Wishmaster and it was time for the first world tour.
