Good man Selim! Never let someone insult your mother in front of you and get away with it! No matter who they are! Selim may not have been the ideal candidate for an heir, but he wasn't stupid. He knew Fatma was trying to pit him against his own mother because she wanted to be in charge. He also knew his brothers were more in favor of Mustafa and could potentially turn against them if it came down to it. With Mehmet tragically taken from them by Mahidivran, Selim knew he had to be the one to protect his mother since his father won't due to still being mad at Hurrem for the spying fiasco.

Also because Suleiman, at the end of the day, *cannot* protect Hürrem from the coming power struggles… because his death will have been what caused them. Thus, Selim really is the smart son here. Bayezed, and Çihanghir are both sort of playing the Ned Stark “trust their intentions” card… but GRRM’s been writing those books long enough that Selim probably read the first book and learned a lesson in surviving politics: Look low-key and trust nobody.

Historically Selim actually did not want the throne, he just had to get it in order to survive. In fact historically it is said that he was an emotional man, suffering the trauma of the execution and death of his brothers and so he took solace in wine. He did not like war and thats why people considered him weak! To prevent fighting among his sons, he had publically announced his son Murad as his successor while he was alive, something that was previously unheard in the Ottomans.

But I think it is not right to deprive any person from their birth right, it extremely angers me that the daughters are treated like trash and the sons like some sort of god, despite the fact that both has the exact same blood, and rights. For example, Hatice would be equal or superior to Suleiman as she was the older sister, but now we tell them to "go back to their place" from the palace they were born in. And some other girl who was brought as their slave takes their home, their place, their power. And can't blame that girl as well, she was forcefully taken from her birthplace, her home, her family.
