This was a beautiful rendition of Sinnerman, which was already done wonderfully by Ms. Nina Simone, taken from a traditional tune. Peter Tosh also played on the theme with Downpressor man. i love Fatoumata Diawara, and when i saw she was honoring Nina Simone, i had to see. The sister is absolutely correct though- what she heard was distinctly African. It was very clear she understood. Though Nina Simone was born in the U.S., she openly identified as African, especially in the later years, because she knew herself as well... She can be seen on video and in interviews identifying as African. Africa is not just a place on the map; it is what is already inside of you. And as Nina Simone has stated over the years, her duty as an artist was to remind African people from whence they came, because we have been conditioned to forget.

C'est très simple, depuis le temps que j'écoute Fatoumata et que je suis son parcours, je dois enfin me rendre à l'évidence : elle est aujourd'hui la plus belle voix d'Afrique, tout en étant une artiste profondément internationale (dans le sens entre-les-nations). Je découvre (grâce à Blues Kitchen TV) que sans l'habillage de ses musiciens, Fatoumata-en-solo est aussi une super guitariste. J'ai eu la chance de la photographier à deux reprises en live. Bientôt une troisième fois, le 16 juin à Saint-Chamond. Bref, super chanteuse, super guitariste et... elle est aussi la plus belle !!! Fatou, would you marry me ? ;>)
