We would love that to happen, and there's no doubt that England mens team is starting to improve after a decade or so of being neglected over the Premisership and money making Club Tournaments. It still needs a few kingpin players to come through though. The Womens World Cup also, has been dominated by the USA for decades. The rest of the world is still playing catch up. It has taken around 10 years to build this England womens team. There has to be the will and investment to create world class athletes of any kind. The World Cup next year will be the real test of how far that has come. Then we will find out how much closer we are to the USA. The same is true for Germany too. France and Spain also. These are the teams with investment behind them. And with every tournament, more countries get on board, expanding their own womens football development schemes. A very exciting time for the game I think.

Just a small quibble. Alex Scott introduces Ella Toone’s goal as the “winning goal” when it was Chloe Kelly’s. Tooney’s goal was sublime though, and Keira Walsh’s pass was pinpoint on target. What she is likely referring to is it got England off the mark and this is really important for England, to get their game together and get confident pressing forward. Things are edgy until the first goal. Scott is a former England player. She knows what she is talking about. Toone's goal changed the match and in spite of the German equaliser late-game, the confidence of having already scored allowed England to get the technical winning goal. Yes, the second goal was the winning goal in 'that sense', that context. But it probably wouldn't have happened without the first, the way it did. The point was that Toone got them going and stopped them getting worried about finding a goal. If Germany had still scored around the same time as they did, and England had not yet scored, coming from behind against Germany at that point would have been very difficult indeed. Of course, we should consider both goals as the winning goals in their own rights. Yet if the shot by Russo had resulted in a goal near the end of the match, then that one (as impressive as it would have been, if it happened), wouldn't have been the winning goal, so much as the cherry on the top. Categorically, yes, the second goal decisively ended the argument. Yet Toone's set the stage for that to be possible. That is what Alex Scott is referring to imo. It's about game management.

P.S - undeniably, Toone's goal was the best goal of either side in the match (followed by Magull's goal for Germany, which was beautifully set up and executed) The most decisive goal, for all it's major importance to England, was technically the least impressive visually and technically, being a toe-poke into the goal after a missed strike to a different corner of the netting. However, the goal was a goal, and put England ahead at 2-1. But if I was forced to rank the goals on skill and finish, they'd be: 🥇- Ella Toone's (England) 🥈- Lina Magull's (Germany) 🥉- Chloe Kelly's (England) Now, if I were to rank the goals on importance and impact, they'd be: 🥇- Chloe Kelly's (England) 🥈- Ella Toone's (England) 🥉- Lina Magull's (Germany) (note: if Germany's equaliser had massively knocked the confidence of the England Lionesses, to the point they started to lose badly, then I'd be putting Lina's goal higher - maybe even first - but all credit where it is due the England side handled the pressure and hit back without losing hope)
