It is called "religion". Not directly, but as a root cause. While there is and should be freedom of religion, American society (and most other societies as well) is taking it too far, by limiting the teaching of critical thinking at school. The result of that is intellectual dissonance: we cannot, on the one hand, allow claims that talking snakes exist and that Jesus cured the blind by rubbing spit in their eyes while, on the other hand, claim that masks work and that Ivermectin does not. Not allowing criticism of the claims of religion, destroys at least partly our ability to show why science is different. We should also put more effort into showing that science is not "another way of knowing". It is not a religion, it is a process that is intended to lead to a better understanding of the universe that ultimately allows us to make tentative predictions about the future that have a higher probability of success. Which brings us to another point: people need to be taught how to live with uncertainty and how to assess probabilities/likelihoods.
