Wait, what?! Does an expert like you still go with crazy bottom layer times like 27-35secs or was it just a default setting? If I have one pet peeve when it comes to resin printing it's people using way longer exposure times than they need. I speculate you fry your screen faster this way, too. Not because the extra mins are anything in the greater scheme of a multiple hour print but because you may be putting a whole lot more heat into the screen. I have yet to have a "bed adhesion" failure on my old, trusty Anycubic 4K Mono and my bottom expos are ~x5 the regular exposure time. Meaning I am often at just 10-12 secs and only four layers. And nope, I didn't come up with this, smarter people did, but it simply works. Besides that, great review. I am hoping the tilting mech can also help resins with heavy die or ceramic particles, etc in them to not settle out so fast. On long prints, this is sometimes an issue. So, maybe the swirling will keep the particles suspended better but at least the faster print time will help.

It's awesome that the Calibration mode allows you to specifically set the time, rather than them deciding what the steps will be for you. That allows you a Binary (Quintinary, actually) Search for dialing in a new resin. For example, if consensus is that the optimum print time is somewhere between 3.7 and 4.1, you can do as follows: Print 1: 3.5, 3.75, 4.0, 4.25 --Two Best: 3.75 & 4.0 Print 2: 3.8, 3.85, 3.9, 3.95 --Two best: 3.95, 4.0 Print 3: 3.96, 3.97, 3.98, 3.99 --Two best: 3.96, 3.97 Print 4: 3.962, 3.964, 3.966, 3.968 --Two best: ???? With _one_ more print, splitting the difference between the two best from print 4, and you've dialed in the perfect print time for that resin to the maximum precision in Chitubox. Plus, if one of the earlier prints was "perfect" from your perspective, then you're done. Add in some sort of resin temperature control, and you should have effectively perfect prints every time with only _four_ test prints total.

I appreciate having the heater and carbon filter as an optional extra, as I print in enclosures with heaters and extraction external to the printer, and i can't be the only one!. I think it makes sense to add those items if you need them as people like me would be put off paying a higher price for these features.
@JC021027 ай бұрын
Same. Personally, the carbon filter does absolutely nothing for me. I have an extraction fan hooked up to the back too which on paper should be more than enough but I think the machine (Saturn 2 in this case) just isn't airtight as I need to it be. Without a respirator I can always smell it if I'm in the same room and if I'm there for even 5-10 minutes my throat gets scratchy in a way I've never experienced. Similar story for the heater. Heating the vat instead of the air made more sense to me so I was always going to go DIY.

Agreed. I don't need a heater at all. So I'd prefer to not pay for something I don't need. I wish they'd to that with all the extras that not everyone wants, and just keep the price low as it can be... like the AI camera, I don't care about that at all.

Great review Ross for the money and the features you mentioned this sure is worth having a second look. Curious to see if those mini heaters are efficient or worthless and it would of been nice if the lift up cover would of had the hinges in a more functioning position as to allow the cover to be raised up and not pass beyond the back of the printer especially for those with limited space. @Speakhardly2 ай бұрын
The tilting mechanism was invented by Prusa Research for their SL1 printer years ago. Would be great if Prusa got the recognition it deserves for such innovations.
@FauxHammer2 ай бұрын
It wasn't invented by Prusa, it's been in industrial printing much longer. Prusa only brought it to consumer market first, Elegoo made it affordable.
@fitz39426 күн бұрын
What a weird thing to comment.
@Speakhardly19 күн бұрын
I appreciate the correction. However, while Elegoo made it affordable, Prusa’s open source mentality did most of the work for them. Prusa are now having to exit the resin printer consumer market due to not wanting to compromise on their open source stance and due to being priced out of the market by the Chinese competitors. I hope that Elegoo and Anycubic can keep innovating even as the reprap community slowly diminishes.
@FauxHammer19 күн бұрын
@I completely appreciate Prusa as I hope I’ve shown in my latest video. But you know Prusa acquired the company that designed that series of resin printers right?
@Speakhardly19 күн бұрын
@ I do, yeah. Though it’s not clear how much of the SL1 was developed after that shift. I’d imagine quite a bit due to the gap between the purchase of the company and the SL1 release. I was mainly just airing out my grievances because I’m sad to see so many people accepting the move to proprietary technology by companies like Bambu Lab, etc. They took what Prusa made and used Prusa’s slowness at a critical time to steal a lot of the growing FDM market. It’s problematic to see the industry moving away from open source, as a few years ago such consumer-oriented stances drove a lot of purchase decisions in the growing market. I’m now getting worried about people simply not caring and that leading to the market's inevitable stagnation and price hikes. Your video was really good and this move by Elegoo has actually made it possible for me to get this technology. I’ve been waiting for an SL2 to release but since Prusa is now moving to the pro market, I’m sadly going to have to let go of my own principles and buy the Saturn 4 Ultra. Still deliberating whether to get this or wait until a Saturn 5 Ultra but nevertheless, the low prices + good quality can no longer be ignored.

So, for someone who prints in a temperature controlled, well ventilated space, this is a pretty good printer?
@scottpovlot73767 ай бұрын
Ross, this really is the best Saturn 4 Ultra review I have seen. I am a bit skeptical about the lack of speed options in the slicer and just Slow/Fast in the printer. I agree that the tilt helps so much with peel forces. This is great for beginners. But more advanced users should be able to experiment with even faster options. Hopefully, an option can be made as firmware update. I was also surprised you didn't mention that a handle would be helpful. I saw you lift the lid with your pinky which is great. And then I thought that I would have a whole bunch of fingerprints all over the front.

I honestly don;t see the lack of a handle as an issue. it;s why i included that part, if you listen to the audio at that bit you can tell i added in the audio afterwards

Can you put a brewing belt around the vat? 😊

Formlabs in 2012 used the same system for the Form 1and drop that system in next model Form 2.

Tilt releases aren't new, they go way back, they're just new for consumer printers. The SL1S starts at $1700.

You opened the printer up and mentioned it was simple to do so but how to easy is an LCD replacement?
@elleryfg78537 ай бұрын
It doesn't make sense that the auto leveling is just springs on the platform. Springs alone wouldn't level the platform against the screen since they would only be parallel in the moment the platform is pressed against it and as soon as the platform raises it would go back to whatever position it had previously. During the printing process the platform/part and the bottom of the vat are not touching, they are separated by whatever is your layer height. The just springs statement doesn't make sense mechanically

It looks like there's some spring loaded ones (the ones that you can see the head of the screw moving when he squeezes the assembly), and others that have a black cover, I wonder if the ones that have the black cover have some sort of locking mechanism so that the ones with springs push it into the screen and then the ones with the black cover lock it into position.
@elleryfg78537 ай бұрын
@@wolfie54321 somebody is going to have to disassemble that build platform. LOL

The vat/screen assembly moves to level to the bed, not the other way around.

@FauxHammer Ross -- how do you feel this compares to what we have seen on the Anycubic M7 Pro so far? That is $499 currently but has a heated vat system so close in price to the S4 Ultra + Heater.
@W98Dragon7 ай бұрын
Hey Ross, kinda off topic, but I wiil say it again, I tried your resin and it's superb! Much much better compared to anycubic WW+, I just hope that it doesn't crack as people say waterwashable resins do, even tho I'm printing models that I prime and paint with lacquers...

Really considering a saturn for my next purchase. I dont care about wifi connectivity or cameras so for me the big thing verses saturn 3 is the tilt screen snd whether its worth the price difference
@FauxHammerКүн бұрын
Also be aware that the normal one can’t do Antiailiasing, either. That may matter. I’ve done a comparison of both printers
@dyansisКүн бұрын
@FauxHammer I watched your side by side straight after. The anti aliasing will be a thing. cheers 😁

hello between this one and the future m7 Pro from anycubic, which one would you choose? Because I'm very hesitant :) very good video by the way :)

with the tilting vat can you still print directly of the bed ie no supports if not elegoo should put something in the software to lock the tilt flat only for printing directly of the bed ??
@FauxHammer2 ай бұрын
Yeah you can still print that way if you want.

Hey, I preordered the Saturn 4 Ultra and I have to say it’s a very nice looking machine…I’m relatively new to resin printing even though I’m not playing by the rules…LOL I have an Anycubic Photon D2, and now the Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra…I quickly fell in love with resin printing with my D2, so I quickly decided on a bigger build plate and even though I wanted the Jupiter which is no longer available I settled for a midsize build plate instead. I set up the printer once it got here and hit print on the first model I sliced, and did get a resin stain on the build plate. I do not understand all the resin settings yet so I just went with factory settings and nothing. What can I be doing wrong?

Would you recommend this over a GKTwo?
@FauxHammer4 ай бұрын
No. I still prefer that. But it’s damn close!!! I wish that had this tilting vat. I wish this has that printers ease of use and heater…
@TheFreestyleStorm2 ай бұрын
hows the print quality compared to the heygears reflex rs?
@FauxHammer2 ай бұрын
It’s hard to justify that as the difference. Depends on your resin and how good you are at dialing a printer in. They are bloody close but the value of the RS goes beyond the print quality. It’s about the experience.

I been thinking about getting this printer BUT what worries me is the bearing or the aluminum going south...So I think I will go with the Saturn 3 Ultra

Fantastic review Ross! I’ve just purchased the M5S Pro and haven’t even used it yet. But this video has given me serious FOMO. Is it worth selling the M5S Pro and buy the Saturn 4 Ultra? Only reason I bought the M5S Pro was the heater!

I just got my Saturn 4 ultra, what exposure time would you recommend?
@Lexst1Ай бұрын
Got the second Ultra 4 in and this one does not power up at all. Unfortunately, that is 2 for 2 having issues. First one had a screw in the vat plate that did not have any threads on it. As my first resin printer I did not know that was wrong (Hindsight I should have) and that led to a hole in the film>resin all over the screen>Screen going bad. They sent a new vat but the damage was done. I got about 300 minis from the first one that I really liked. I could have continued by only populating the left side of the build plate but wanted to put in a new screen. Second one is just complete disappointment. I have contacted support, and they asked me to troubleshoot the power brick and to remove the rear plate and check the connecters. No issues found. I have ordered a third machine in the meantime. Awaiting a reply from support and will let you know...

In the price range of the Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra, which printer would you recommend? Is it this printer?
@massimilianocibelli76585 ай бұрын
Ross, you think installing a magnetic flexplate would be usefull on this machine to reduce the cleaning mess? Also, would it be difficult with the self leveling system?
@FauxHammer5 ай бұрын
You know I’m generally against flex plates but that could work. But you’d still need to transfer this bed to an area where you remove the plate and still have resin drip everywhere. Unless you flex parts off whilst keeping the tray attached to the z-arm. But then you risk dropping models onto the screen…
