Wait, what?! Does an expert like you still go with crazy bottom layer times like 27-35secs or was it just a default setting? If I have one pet peeve when it comes to resin printing it's people using way longer exposure times than they need. I speculate you fry your screen faster this way, too. Not because the extra mins are anything in the greater scheme of a multiple hour print but because you may be putting a whole lot more heat into the screen. I have yet to have a "bed adhesion" failure on my old, trusty Anycubic 4K Mono and my bottom expos are ~x5 the regular exposure time. Meaning I am often at just 10-12 secs and only four layers. And nope, I didn't come up with this, smarter people did, but it simply works. Besides that, great review. I am hoping the tilting mech can also help resins with heavy die or ceramic particles, etc in them to not settle out so fast. On long prints, this is sometimes an issue. So, maybe the swirling will keep the particles suspended better but at least the faster print time will help.

Let’s see if they’ll have time to do something about it… otherwise, I will create yet another MOD for the printer. Oh, I didn’t test, but maybe it is possible to manually adjust the actual pressure of each corner, tightening the springy screws.

It's awesome that the Calibration mode allows you to specifically set the time, rather than them deciding what the steps will be for you. That allows you a Binary (Quintinary, actually) Search for dialing in a new resin. For example, if consensus is that the optimum print time is somewhere between 3.7 and 4.1, you can do as follows: Print 1: 3.5, 3.75, 4.0, 4.25 --Two Best: 3.75 & 4.0 Print 2: 3.8, 3.85, 3.9, 3.95 --Two best: 3.95, 4.0 Print 3: 3.96, 3.97, 3.98, 3.99 --Two best: 3.96, 3.97 Print 4: 3.962, 3.964, 3.966, 3.968 --Two best: ???? With _one_ more print, splitting the difference between the two best from print 4, and you've dialed in the perfect print time for that resin to the maximum precision in Chitubox. Plus, if one of the earlier prints was "perfect" from your perspective, then you're done. Add in some sort of resin temperature control, and you should have effectively perfect prints every time with only _four_ test prints total.

@Fauxhammer I purchased my Saturn 4 ultra and received it about a week ago. It has issues and does not function correctly. Myself and other users are reporting issues with the “self leveling” and tilting vat. One corner is not adhering to the bed causing everything to fail in that one corner. Support is making me go through all of the unrelated items first. Multiple users are reporting this. A heads up if you can get an update or info from elegoo.
@winstano6 ай бұрын
I'd echo this - There's a growing number of users with this issue - The build plate "auto level" does not fully level the plate for the first few layers and it's not covering the entire plate. I can slide a piece of paper underneath the back of the build plate when it's doing the auto levelling and also when the print starts if I run it without the vat in!
@FauxHammer6 ай бұрын
I need to have a look at this in more detail. I have heard other comments like this. Which is shit because I had no issue but if there’s a massive inherent problem I’ll cover it and warn people
@winstano6 ай бұрын
@@FauxHammer I've been in touch with Elegoo support and they've sent a gcode file over that looks to have at least partly resolved the issue. My guess is that it's lowered the 0 height for the levelling process. They're also sending me a new build plate in case that's causing the problem. Running a test print that uses a larger chunk of the plate so will see what happens
@mikejackson95856 ай бұрын
If you have a build plate that was poorly assembled, a channel called Geek Detour took apart his plate on a Mars 5 Ultra and shows how to manually level the plate. From the tear down, I can easily see how the tensioning could be off from the factory. Fixing it seems very simple though (simply changing the preload on the springs).

I appreciate having the heater and carbon filter as an optional extra, as I print in enclosures with heaters and extraction external to the printer, and i can't be the only one!. I think it makes sense to add those items if you need them as people like me would be put off paying a higher price for these features.
@JC021028 ай бұрын
Same. Personally, the carbon filter does absolutely nothing for me. I have an extraction fan hooked up to the back too which on paper should be more than enough but I think the machine (Saturn 2 in this case) just isn't airtight as I need to it be. Without a respirator I can always smell it if I'm in the same room and if I'm there for even 5-10 minutes my throat gets scratchy in a way I've never experienced. Similar story for the heater. Heating the vat instead of the air made more sense to me so I was always going to go DIY.
@BabyJesus668 ай бұрын
Agreed. I don't need a heater at all. So I'd prefer to not pay for something I don't need. I wish they'd to that with all the extras that not everyone wants, and just keep the price low as it can be... like the AI camera, I don't care about that at all.

Got the second Ultra 4 in and this one does not power up at all. Unfortunately, that is 2 for 2 having issues. First one had a screw in the vat plate that did not have any threads on it. As my first resin printer I did not know that was wrong (Hindsight I should have) and that led to a hole in the film>resin all over the screen>Screen going bad. They sent a new vat but the damage was done. I got about 300 minis from the first one that I really liked. I could have continued by only populating the left side of the build plate but wanted to put in a new screen. Second one is just complete disappointment. I have contacted support, and they asked me to troubleshoot the power brick and to remove the rear plate and check the connecters. No issues found. I have ordered a third machine in the meantime. I had a Formlabs Form 1+. It was similar in that it utilized a tilt feature on the resin tray to “peel” the print from the bedplate. Over time, I noticed the constant peel to one side would throw off the bedplate leveling. In addition, sometimes, the tilt wasn’t “deep” enough to execute the peel. Meaning, the bedplate would twist and deflect over the entire resin tray tilt cycle. It would never actually peel and release. This would always result in failed prints. Do you anticipate these issues with the Saturn 4 Ultra? Sincerely, Orcrist, The Goblin Cleaver

It doesn't make sense that the auto leveling is just springs on the platform. Springs alone wouldn't level the platform against the screen since they would only be parallel in the moment the platform is pressed against it and as soon as the platform raises it would go back to whatever position it had previously. During the printing process the platform/part and the bottom of the vat are not touching, they are separated by whatever is your layer height. The just springs statement doesn't make sense mechanically

So I will print only small elements, but tricky ones like wheels with all fine details. And then is resin types question because it would be great if it could work with rubber or clear acrylic type resins. Could you advise me where I should look and what printers are with consideration? And thank you for great job you're doing. You saved me already from making mistake. YT is full of videos which are misleading and your channel is so helpful with explanations and knowledge.

@FauxHammer Ross -- how do you feel this compares to what we have seen on the Anycubic M7 Pro so far? That is $499 currently but has a heated vat system so close in price to the S4 Ultra + Heater.

hows the print quality compared to the heygears reflex rs?
@FauxHammer3 ай бұрын
It’s hard to justify that as the difference. Depends on your resin and how good you are at dialing a printer in. They are bloody close but the value of the RS goes beyond the print quality. It’s about the experience.

One next interaction. 1) Handle 2) Easy removal of lid without unscrewing anything, just pressing to release 3) Front removal without screws 4) any leak protection inside to catch leaking resin thru the gap. 4) Easy replacement for films by just replacing plastic module so it can take few seconds 5) bigger screen with adjustable position

cool and interesting review! I liked how indepth and technical it was, but i would suggest to cut down on the stock reaction clips. They are too long and don't add anything but interrupt the flow of your visual narration, maybe add them in an overlay over actual footage if you must.

I'm curious about this too. The price between this and the GKTwo are much closer now so it's tougher to decide between the two. The tilting bed feels like a game changer and being able to eliminate a large chunk of the print settings feels like a big deal. Does that put it above GKTwo and it's heated bed now? Curious to get people's opinions.

Hopefully not a stupid question but does the tilt function allow for the flat surfaces of a print to be set at less of an angle to the build plate or even set on it?
@johnhinkey53368 ай бұрын
There MUST be a way to level (not zero which the machine does by itself) the build plate using those screws - similar to the GKTwo I suspect. I build directly on the build plate and must have excellent control over the first layer uniformity and thus need the build plate to be extremely parallel to the LCD screen.

Great review! :) I pre-ordered an S4U recently so it's nice to see a positive look at it. I see Anycubic have just announced the Mono 7 with a heated vat, a resin pump, a 14k screen (for whatever that's worth) and they've increased the Z height so the build volume is on a par or maybe slightly better than this. Of course they don't have the tilting vat and in the UK it'll be significantly more expensive than the S4U.

I am thinking about getting into Resin printing for the first time.. From this video I maybe tempted for this printer. My background is FDM and recently my main prints are Bambu’s so I am looking for a printer to print and not tinker so this looks to be the one? However I am not painter so I am looking to print decor items such as busts similar so wondering if there are glitter or mixed colour resins so they come off looking unique from the actual resin similar buying dual and tri colour filaments or glitter filaments etc.
@FauxHammer6 ай бұрын
U fortunately there is only one bambulike resin printer which is the HeyGears UltraCraft reflex… but that has some massive limits too.. As for coloured resins. I’ve seen some metallic like ones but never seen practical prints. Some of the best one are fluorescents and translucent. For fluos, check Phrozen, and @abovewongart had some great video using coloured translucents

I've been having success with my M5S Pro by setting everything up in Lychee then dropping it into the Anycubic slicer for remote printing. I'm looking at the Saturn 4 to get away from ACF. Question 1: Can I just use high quality (not speed) resin and atill be fast? 2: Is Chitubox good enough to just use it and skip Lychee or should I use the same process with the S4?
@scottpovlot73768 ай бұрын
Ross, this really is the best Saturn 4 Ultra review I have seen. I am a bit skeptical about the lack of speed options in the slicer and just Slow/Fast in the printer. I agree that the tilt helps so much with peel forces. This is great for beginners. But more advanced users should be able to experiment with even faster options. Hopefully, an option can be made as firmware update. I was also surprised you didn't mention that a handle would be helpful. I saw you lift the lid with your pinky which is great. And then I thought that I would have a whole bunch of fingerprints all over the front.
@FauxHammer8 ай бұрын
I honestly don;t see the lack of a handle as an issue. it;s why i included that part, if you listen to the audio at that bit you can tell i added in the audio afterwards

Can confirm the AI camera with room light on will detect shifting print objects if the plate is not crowded. Had a tall print peeling off and it caught it with 30% still attached the build plate.

Hey, I preordered the Saturn 4 Ultra and I have to say it’s a very nice looking machine…I’m relatively new to resin printing even though I’m not playing by the rules…LOL I have an Anycubic Photon D2, and now the Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra…I quickly fell in love with resin printing with my D2, so I quickly decided on a bigger build plate and even though I wanted the Jupiter which is no longer available I settled for a midsize build plate instead. I set up the printer once it got here and hit print on the first model I sliced, and did get a resin stain on the build plate. I do not understand all the resin settings yet so I just went with factory settings and nothing. What can I be doing wrong?

Did a cursory glance through the comments but didnt see any with my question. Ross, you think installing a magnetic flexplate would be usefull on this machine to reduce the cleaning mess? Also, would it be difficult with the self leveling system?
@FauxHammer7 ай бұрын
You know I’m generally against flex plates but that could work. But you’d still need to transfer this bed to an area where you remove the plate and still have resin drip everywhere. Unless you flex parts off whilst keeping the tray attached to the z-arm. But then you risk dropping models onto the screen…
