Love this list and totally agree about this being the year of the female singer songwriter. Beth Gibbons-Lives Outgrown is the one that has struck with me. You mentioned Malkmus, The Hard Quartet is my pick for most fun listen of the year, it’s like finding a lost Pavement record.

Thank you for sharing your list! I'm definitely going to check out Wussy. The John Moreland album is wonderful, this was the first I had heard of him and I'm really enjoying it. There are a couple I wanted to share with you that you might dig if you haven't yet heard them. Canadian artist Shaina Hayes's album "Kindergarten Heart", and Danish band Kindsight "No Shame No Fame".

At the risk invoking controversy (which I never like to wade into), Ryan Adams released five albums in 2024. Some great material, everything from his more rock type stuff to more quiet, contemplative songwriting. Haven’t listened to all albums in their entirety yet, but Sword and Stone is a good place to start. As for the controversy, no human is without flaw, and some of the stuff Adams was accused of (bad stuff) pales in comparison to some of the utterly debased stories from the classic rock era tour bus, or the hair metal degenerates of the 80s. I believe in redemption and second chances and the industry’s blackballing of Adams’ music seems unproportional to his crimes.

I don't like the automatic cancelling of an artist one bit. I find the trend to be incredibly disturbing, although I don't condone the behavior in the least bit. Ryan Adams to me started to feel so inauthentic. Like everything is a genre study. I can't wrap my head around 5 new albums from any one artist in a single year but will check out Sword and Stone.
@GoneButNotGoneКүн бұрын
@ Ryan is a complex guy. He is clearly a gifted songwriter, and in his finest moments one of the very best. But he’s so prolific, almost to his detriment. I’m Still wading through the five albums, lots I really like, some I don’t. Another of the five, Star Sign has some really fine moments. I think there were a few years when he was struggling with drugs, alcohol, mental health, and he did sort of lose his way musically at times. He’s apparently been clean, but jeezus, five albums in one year. Who does that? Other than some home studio Bandcamp schnook with way too much time. I think he has adequately repented and apologized for his wrongs, paid a pretty hard cancellation penalty, and really hope it is his music that we talk about moving forward rather than his personal woes. He’s got so much to say musically, perhaps too much at times, but gems he’s written remain some of my favourites going back to his Whisketown days.

@@GoneButNotGone if you like Ryan Adams, I suggest that you give Nick Piunti a listen
@GoneButNotGone13 сағат бұрын
@ I like Nick’s stuff, some great pop-rock. He reminds of a lot of Peter Case, especially Case’s Plimsouls era and A Million Miles Away. But I digress…

If musicians had to be 'nice people', I doubt there would be many left. We all know the stories. There is no need to name names. But unlike Adams, they are still revered and on magazine covers and tours. Adams seems to have behaved awfully, but why does he get the fallout and not other artists who are often guilty of much worse? Yes, alot of great music was released by Adams this year, including 4 at the start of the year and also Blackhole just a few weeks ago. His recent best, imo is Wednesdays, just a dark beautiful album, perfect.

If you're open to a suggestion (beyond perhaps articulating when you speak): could you please - PLEASE!!! - put the name of the album and artist along the bottom or on the screen in some useful manner as you mention them? Enjoyed being introduced to these albums, almost ALL of which I had hitherto never heard of. for that, thank you!
