(college sophomore art student here) I admire the fact that you don't immediately go for the most professional high quality supplies. My professors always make us buy the most expensive supplies they make (like tiny tubes of oil paint that are ~$20) and insist that they're the ONLY tools that will work and that your art will look bad if you dont buy the most expensive kind of everything. I never believed this but I know a lot of younger artists do. The truth is that a good artist and make do with any tools no matter how cheap, because the artist is who makes great art, not the tools.
@ocean68256 жыл бұрын
tinytiffany I think this is only true to some extent. If your doing art, obviously the quality of your materials will affect your final outcome and if its hobby drawing its okay to use any supply but if your going to art school and planning to do business youll NEED the expensive quality products

@melaniecoenraad68187 жыл бұрын
Yashar right?! In my art class we only do stupid paintings with certain themes and you can't even choose the materials you want to work with:/
@maurajuana7 жыл бұрын
Melanie Coenraad that probably isnt your art teachers fault, normally in lower level art classes you dont have as many choices, and you are given a sort of theme or topic to base your projects on. but as you get into higher level art classes you get more freedom, such as media used and more room to change up the initial project theme the teacher assigned. this is mostly to weed out people who dont really want to do art and are just trying to get fine arts credits out of the way, and it prevents wasting expensive material- higher level classes also tend to use better quality materials Like I took painting I last year, and we were only allowed to use acrylic and water color, and my teacher told us which to use and what type of imagery to base our project on, for example she wanted a watercolor of a still life she set up, and we couldnt stray from it. but then in painting II, she let us use our choice of acrylic/watercolor/oil, and still gave us a general assignment to go by, but let us talk to her if we had a different idea that was still somewhat related. If you choose to apply and take AP studio art like conan, which (at least in my school) has a $50 fee for material use, you will have all the freedom to create what you want using the media you want. You will still have sketchbook assignments with a specific theme but other than your teaher helping you with ideas if you are stuck you will have the final say (for the most part), especially in your AP portfolio. You have to work your way up in a way, but it gets more fun as you progress.

Gina Yu maybe idk but I bought a really nice new set of Polychromos online for like $50. Would you say that Polychromos or Prismacolor is better?
@hollyc83617 жыл бұрын
Polychromos are oil-based colored pencils whereas Prismacolors are wax-based. They're generally more expensive. They both blend in different ways and it's really a matter of preference. Wax-based colored pencils generally erase better and are much softer. They build up to a more buttery texture. They're susceptible to wax bloom and breakage. Oil-based are harder to find but are a bit more firm therefore they don't break as much and keep a point longer. They can't build up to as buttery of a texture. They also don't bloom over time. The methods are different as well. With Wax-based, you generally blend with a colorless blender, whereas with oil-based you tend to use solvents. tl;dr Prismacolors and Polychromos are two different types of colored pencils and it really is up to preference as to which is "better"

Hey Conan, I was wondering if you had any advice on skin tones with prismacolors. Whenever I draw a person they either look dead or pink😂 Thank yoouuuuuuu!!
@ashl25587 жыл бұрын
Mallory D, I know I'm not Conan but I've worked so much with prisms colors. My advice is layering layering layering and some more layering. Don't just use a generic skin color look at the undertones are they pink, red, yellow , purple and add a very light layer of that

I would definitely recommend getting a set of watercolor pencils. You basically sketch something out with the pencils and use your watercolor brushes to turn the pencil into watercolor. It's so pretty and useful!
@sophieoneill86585 жыл бұрын
a good substitute for prismacolor is castle art supplies, soft series pencils 💗

I usually use prismacolours as well, but I use them to give more detail to the drawing. I use microns to ink and sometimes to colour and then I use copics. I like to use them because they're easy to blend and it has a brush tip so it feels like I'm painting. But when I do paint, I usually do watercolour with Crayola markers because it's really fun to make different colours with them.

Hey Conan :) not sure if you'll ever see this but could you make a vid on the colour theories that you were talking about? Love this vid so much and would totally watch if you made the colour theories video :) 💓

I use royal soft grip brushes. They are easy to control things with and they have that bounce back. I use them a lot when I am painting with water colors and acrylic.
