A Darker Shade of magic is one of my all-time favorite books and V.E. Schwab is my favorite author. I hope you love the next book. In my opinion, it was better than the first one! I also really loved A Monster Calls, so I'm ready to cry during the movie.

My favorite book was definitely Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo, but A Gathering Of Shadows was absolutely one of my favorites and you are going to adore it! It is, in my opinion, even better than the first book and I am so excited for A Conjuring Of Light

Since I found your channel I added around 20 books on my tbr list on goodreads haha. And now I have to add a darker shade of magic too haha Thank you for your amazing video's that brighten my days! My favorite books of 2016 in random order: A study in Charlotte, The girl who never was (and the sequel The boy with the hidden name), Throne of Glass and a Dutch book (I love it so much I wish it was translated in English) called De Nachtuilen (which translates to The Nightowls. I met the author and he is soo nice!

Before I read Of Fire and Stars, Everything Leads to You was my favourite f/f romance. Two of my favourites especially since I had a streak of disappointing f/f books. I also still cry over what Denna's mum said to Mare in her last chapter.

Unfortunately i haven't finished Of Fire and Stars yet, so it doesn't count as a 2016 favorite, but it would be my #1 if i had. For the books that I actually did finish in 2016, my favs were: -Colorblind by Sierra Maley (who doesn't love an angsty f/f romance with a happy ending) -Star Wars: Lost Stars by Claudia Gray (who knew all it took for me to enjoy a YA straight romance was to put it in this universe!) -Smoke Gets In Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory by Caitlin Doughty (i actually read this because i saw it in a video of yours)
@ProblemsofaBookNerd8 жыл бұрын
I'm so glad you enjoyed Smoke Gets in Your Eyes! It was probably my favorite nonfiction book that I read in 2016. So fascinating! And I will have to look into Colorblind because I don't think I have heard of that one before!

Gathering of Shadows I was sure was going to be my fave of the year but The Kings Men, The Dream Thieves and Princes Gambit slid ahead of it. Yes, it has pirates, magical touraments, Rhy's perspective and a new fave Alcuard.

Fangirl was probably a book that would have made my honorable mentions! It felt like such an accurate depiction of my first year in college. And definitely my favorite version of the nerdy main character that I have ever read!

All the Ugly and Wonderful Things was such an interesting book! It was probably the book I read this year that forced me to really think about what I was reading and respond to it actively. I read Harry Potter for the first time this year after purposely waiting years until I was ready and I tried my best to avoid spoilers during that time. It was my most favorite book this year 😊 I also really enjoyed reading Death and the Maiden by Ariel Dorfman in Spanish. Based on your recommendation I reading The Mystic Art of Erasing All Signs of Death and it was really good! bc of the dialogue format I sometimes mixed people up but it was a good story!
@ProblemsofaBookNerd8 жыл бұрын
The dialogue format on that one can definitely be hard to get used to! But I think it is such an original story. I'm glad you liked it!

I've been having an internal struggle about reading A Monster Calls. I really want to read it and I also really don't want to. Having been through the exact grief that the character goes through, it's going to hit home and it's going to hit hard and that's my "I really don't want to." But also, having been through it I want to see how it's handled, see if I can relate or if it's completely off base and that's my "I really want too."
@ProblemsofaBookNerd8 жыл бұрын
I can completely understand how that would lead to some indecision. Reading books that personal I'm sure can be very difficult. Obviously whether or not you read it is up to you, but I would just say that I hope you only try it when you feel you are in a place that you don't think a book that emotional could be really damaging to you. I understand wanting to read a book you might relate to deeply, but I also wouldn't want you putting yourself in a reading situation that would be upsetting. Just make sure you are thinking about yourself whatever you decide to do as far as reading the book!

I felt the same way you did about A Darker Shade of Magic until I read the sequel and absolutely hated it. Nothing happens during 90% of the book and all of the characters got on my nerves, especially Lila, who went from my favorite character to the one I can stand the least. There's a bi character that is stereotypically portrayed as promiscuous, and so many other issues... I would recommend pretending ADSOM is a standalone, because I loved the first book, but unfortunately the sequel ruined the series for me.
