Why does Billy Squire catch so much shit for “Rock Me Tonight” while Paul Stanley acts like Paul Stanley?!
@johnpatterson42723 жыл бұрын
'Rock Me Tonight' was unfortunately a poorly directed video from the early MTV age of bigger production budgets which threw money at good songs with weak story lines. Billy Squier had serious street-cred as a heavy rock and roller until this badly choreographed, dance-infused folly with neon colours and pastel polyester clothing hit the TV. It was a time when music videos could make or break a new or established band.
@treff92262 жыл бұрын
Because Paul Stanley is in a pretty popular band that plays kick ass hard rock....I believe the name of the band is Kiss, and I think he might be the lead singer.

Sorry for your loss Lynne, my sincerest condolences, that Johnny Cash song, Hurt, is a good song/video, it's actually a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song. I was like 7 or so when MTV came on the air in '81, so my favorites are all over the place. In no particular order: Metallica - One Twisted Sister - I Wanna Rock Michael Jackson - Thriller Men At Work - Who Can It Be Now Motley Crue - Smokin' In The Boys Room Slayer - Seasons In The Abyss Toto - Africa Van Halen - Hot For Teacher David Lee Roth - California Girls or Yankee Rose Iron Maiden - Run To The Hills Suicidal Tendencies - Institutionalized Guns N Roses - Welcome To The Jungle ... etc etc!

Hi Pete and Lynne. I agree with all your selections except Home Sweet Home. Here are some of mine off the top of my head. Love. 1. Anthrax - Bring the Noise 2. Whitesnake - Still of the Night 3. XTC - Dear God 4. Badlands - Winters Call Pete, I thought your were going to pick Badlands with their "Brother Band" Blue Murder. 5. The Firm - Radioactive 6. Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls 7. Rush - Subdivisions - This song and video depicts my growing up in high school. Plus my favorite video game was Tempest also. Hate. 1. Judas Priest - Breaking the Law 2. Motley Crue - Smoking in the Boys Room 3. A Flock of Seagulls - I Ran 4. Falco - Der Kommisar - I love the song however the video is ridiculously cheesy.

Bob Dylan : Subterranean Homesick Blues (Genius in the simplicity of cue cards!) 9. Judas Priest : Breaking The Law (2 1/2 minutes of Priest fun!) 10. Nirvana : "Smells Like Teen Spirit (Perfect mix of audio and video) Oh, one more... 11. Bonnie Tyler : Total Eclipse Of The Heart (I loved this song and the video was weird but good!) ....and for the worst..AFTER Billy Squire... Journey : Separate Ways!!!! (Ugh! 🤢🤮)

One that brings back memories for me when it first come out was Ratt's first album hit "Round and Round". Ratt is set up in the attic of a rich man's mansion. Ratt starts terrorizing them with their music while they were eating dinner. Warren DeMartini crashes through the attic floor onto the dinner table while ripping into a lead solo. Drywall and dust flying everywhere. That video and album made them one of the biggest bands of that era. Milton Berle was in the video. His nephew was the bands manager at the time.

Great video I really had a great time and a laugh watching this one and Pete great Black Country accent there you almost sounded like me for a sec ;) Also Lynn truly sorry for your loss, hang in there and were all here for you no matter what... Reet then onto the video, being a youngster at 34 I missed the golden classic era on MTV but I do remember VH1 where all the classic video's were so I'll mix it up with the old and new videos. First of all the ones I love 1. Rush - Time Stand Still (How can you not like this video the floating around of the band and Aimee Mann captaining the ship, such a wonderful cinematic experience) 2. Bon Jovi - Living on a Prayer (First time I ever saw these guys and I thought the zip line thing was the coolest thing ever) 3. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication (I remember seeing this video for the first time and wanting to go out and buy this game, fantastic) 4. Queen - I Want to break Free (Camp as anything, the guys based this on popular UK soap opera Coronation Street, amazing acting from the boys and Roger Taylor scarily looks very feminine in this video) 5. Guns N Roses - November Rain (Wow just wow, I still don't know if the rain killed that chick or not, and Slash at the church doing that epic solo. Love them or hate them, this was a brilliant shot.) The ones I hate 1. Toto - Rosanna (So pervy and cheesy this one and the band look like they're tongues are hanging out over the chick who clearly doesn't want to know, it was the 80s after all) 2. Genesis - I Can't Dance (The band hit an all time low with this video, nobody want to see them strutting like Ric Flair...ugh) 3. Limp Bizkit - Rollin (Fred looks like he's got a Ferret down his trousers and Ben Stiller?? Really?...Next!!) 4. Warrant - Heaven (Made it on the this list purely for Jani Lane's dodgy wink at the end...WTF!!! lmao) 5. Survivor - Eye of the Tiger (Love the song and adore the band, but you have to admit, these five strutting down the street don't look as tough as they are making out lol) Honorable Mentions for video's I like Cher - If I Could Turn Back Time Foo Fighters - Everlong Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer Had fun doing this one...on to the next!! :) Nick

Fun and entertaining show, folks. Lynne, like other here I offer my deepest sympathies on losing both your parents in the last year. A tough time but your contagious joy of life and good friends help. And I loved your discussion of being a manager at the cemetery and talking with 'the relatives.' About a decade ahead of Pete on the calendar so MTV was not as big an attraction to me though I do fondly remember a few videos. Among them, Thriller for the reasons you both mention. Also, "Take On Me" by a_ha [the sheer novelty of it at the time] and Madonna shout outs for "Vogue" and "Express Yourself." And I always liked Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" - the song and the video. But among the stinkers not mentioned is Whatzupwityu by Eddie Murphy and Michael Jackson. What a stinker! And another "Yes" vote for the Hudson Valley Squares to tackle and extension of this topic or a discussion of Seinfeld. Until then, Happy Festivus for the rest of us. Thanks for the show.

Run DMC's Walk this Way came out in 1986, and it did indeed revive Aerosmith's career. They attempted a comeback album called Done with Mirrors in 1984, but that one fizzled. However, the success of Walk this Way brought them back into the mainstream, so that their next album, Permanent Vacation, became a major hit. Would it have been as successful without the Run DMC crossover success? Who knows, but it certainly helped.

Top 3: 1) Don Henley, "The Boys of Summer." From the B&W photography, the haunting images like Don as a child practicing on the drums to the grown-up Don looking backward (to the past) and the rear-screen projection representing the past, just great! It won the first-year MTV Video of the Year award and deservedly so! 2) Richard Marx, "Don't Mean Nothing." Great song and video about his struggle to break into the music business, but has personal signficance to me because it reminds me of the years I lived in L.A. For this same reason, Randy Newman's "I Love L.A." 3) Sting, "Fortress Around Your Heart." A great storyline of a future, washed-up Sting who still has one obsessive fan out there. You guys left out some artists who each made a bunch of great videos like Billy Joel ("Tell Her About It" is a favorite), Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie and, yes, Huey Lewis and the News, although that "Hip To Be Square" one is terrible! For the stinky cheese, I hope Pete or one of the Squares picks Steve Winwood's "When You See A Chance" on that upcoming show. Great artist and song but awful video! Also, should note that Niedemeyer is probably featured in that Twisted Sister video because his dialogue from the movie is included at the end of the song: "You're all worthless and weak!...Now drop and give me 20!...A pledge pin? On your UNIFORM??!!!" LOL! Condolences to Lynne.

RAINBOW/I Can't Let You Go,with great vocals by Joe Lynn Turner & a horror premise. DOKKEN/Heaven Sent,just a kick-ass rock song with a Lynch solo in a graveyard... who wouldn't like that? + The JACKO short-film /Thriller. There's just some things standard in those 80's music videos: 1."Mostly" good musicianship 2.One or more attractive females. 3. Period cheese. For better or worse;an era never to return😎.

In no particular order: Fire (Crazy Arthur Brown) - The original Shock Rocker 1968 B&W Video 13 years before MTV existed, Rock Me Amadeus (Falco) - Quirky fun 80s music, Gimme All You're Lovin (ZZ Top) - Not Top at their best but a cool video, Take On Me (A Ha) - Really creative video and catchy pop song, Don't You Want Me (Human League) - Another cool 80s song with a video that bends truth and fiction, Another Brick in the Wall (Pink Floyd) - Both videos I have seen are great, Hurt (Johnny Cash) - So impactful, hard not to cry every time, Don't Give Up (Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush) - Just heartbreaking & Inspirational

Two of the videos that hooked me as a kid: “Heat of the Moment” and “Only Time Will Tell” by Asia.

Dire Straits´ two videos for Walk Of Life are wonderful. The first one, with a guy singing and playing the London underground or a tunnel, is a bit sentimental, and the other one, with all the sports bloopers, hilarious! We're Not Gonna Take It with Twister Sister is just like Lynne says a truly a generation thing. I love that one! And yes Pete, Sledgehammer is absolutely wonderful! I love the steam train and as a teenager watching that for the first time was awesome back then The video for Godley & Creme's Cry is fantastic! Jump by Van Halen is great, mostly for showing off David Lee Roth's jumping prowess. We Didn't Start The Fire by Billy Joel is also great in all its historical presentation. Land Of Confusion indeed! Spitting Image did a very good job with the puppets on this one. And I guess what you Pete is thinking about is I Can't Dance, a deliberate stinker because Genesis were making fun of the style of videos at the time. The Big Money by Rush is both good and bad. It's so 80s! All that terrible hair and the colours, but the guys are professional anyway. Rush also made a real stinker for Time Stand Still. Come on, floating drumkits weren't a thing even back in 1989.

Favorite: come on feel the noize by Quiet Riot in 1983 which made that album become the first ”Heavy Metal” album to reach number 1. The worst “ Rock me tonight” by Billy Squier which ruined his career, he should’ve hired a female model to dance in that video instead of him. By the way can you do a ranking either top 10 songs or albums by Billy Squier since he deserves redemption from that video fiasco

I love Billy Squier. If someone did that kind of video these days it would really be no big deal at all. Hell, Foo Fighters dressed in drag in one of their videos and no one gave two squats.
