Martin Popoff's reviews are quite predictable and formulaic :70s are all good, 80s are all bad. It's Delivered-to-Address nostalgia that ticks confirmation bias of 70s nostalgia fans & is built on a caricaturised version of the past.
@LuchaLibertaria
@LuchaLibertaria 3 жыл бұрын
In this show Martin Popoff ridicules Black Crowes as a hair band as if they were some talentless hacks that formed a band after they had been to a hair saloon. (If Black Crowes album had been released in 1978 instead of 1990 & had literally the same music&image, Martin would have called it Southern Rock)

Greetings from South Wales, UK. Another great show guys. Here's my Top 10. No apologies for putting Skynyrd top of the pile. I can't pick between their 5 original studio albums, so I've listed them all. Ha! Not only are they the best Southern Rock Band of all time, but THE best band to have come out of the US of A. End of. So, off the top of my head, my favourite Southern Rock albums: 1/LYNYRYD SKYNYRD - PRONOUNCED/GIMME BACK.../NUTHIN' FANCY/STREET SURVIVORS/SECOND HELPING 2/ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND - BROTHERS & SISTERS 3/MARSHALL TUCKER BAND - CAROLINA DREAMS 5/GRINDERSWITCH - MACON BLUES 6/MOLLY HATCHET - FLIRTIN' WITH DISASTER 7/BLACKFOOT - TOMCATIN' 8/BLACK CROWES - SOUTHERN HARMONY 9/THE OUTLAWS - THE OUTLAWS 10/38 SPECIAL - SPECIAL FORCES Some honourable mentions: DOC HOLLIDAY - RIDES AGAIN GOV'T MULE - THE DEEP END Vols 1 & 2 SKINNY MOLLY - NO GOOD DEED Not included any ZZ Top as they are in essence, as Pete points out, a Texas Blues Band. Love Little Feat, but as they aren't from the south, so not included any of their albums either. I guess if I was including ZZ Top, then I could not leave out the awesome 13th Floor Elevators nor some or Roky Erickson's solo material. Not sure if you would include any bands or artists from New Orleans in the Southern Rock category but if so two albums I could not leave out are, Professor Longhair/Rock N' Roll Gumbo & Dr John's/Gris Gris. Jeez just realised I've left out the ROSSINGTON COLLINS BAND - ANYTIME ANYPLACE ANYWHERE. Guess it would be my No. 2

@@antoniovita5363 I had the same initial feeling towards the album covers myself, when I was a yungin'. But in the 70s, and even into the 80s, bands used album cover art to get album sales. There was no internet, texting, file sharing, etc. Many of these bands had no hope of getting airplay, and if they eventually did, it was due to fan's requests brought on by album sales. Whether you think the album cover matches the music or not, they generated interest, which in turn generated sales, which in turn generated airplay. It worked perfectly. Those album covers are synonymous with MH now. Iron Maiden followed the same blueprint. Just to a greater degree.

Had tickets to see ARS 4 different times, twice in Birmingham and twice in Houston. No shows each time, the fourth time was actually a free concert they were supposed to play in Houston so really only 3 times had I pre~purchased tickets but they were no shows for the free show also. Ironically, a couple of months later Steppenwolf played the free concert which was every Thursday in downtown Houston and I put my card in a box trying to win the door prize , didn't even know what the door prize was, when the radio station called me the following Monday to tell me I had won the door prize and that I had won a guitar. When I got to the station that night to pick up the guitar it was signed by all the members of Atlanta Rhythm Section sans Paul Goddard, (he wasn't with them on that tour) but Ronnie Hammond and the rest of them signed the guitar that I won. I wish that I could have seen that line up perform live, the first time I missed them because I had to work and all of my friends were telling me how great Ronnie and Paul were, they couldn't believe how great the bass player was. Sure wish I could have seen them play live. I was front row just to the left of center stage for the Steppenwolf show, one of the best shows I've ever seen.

He & Rossington fell out, Gary got the girl, Allen got the band. Rossington - Collins - This Is The Way. The band was imploding (see above) but this 2nd outing tops an impressive debut. Alias - Contraband. Some Skynyrd guys become a couple southern singer songwriters' session band and produce a hidden gem. Guessing all these long outta print but ever get a chance to listen any of them ... highly rec'd.

Excellent Popoff and Pardo show on a music genre very close to my heart. Very entertaining show and loved hearing the choices from the two of you. Using the Pardo rule of only 1 album from any artist/group, the top 10 for today are: 1. The Allman Brother Band eponymous debut 2. Second Helping - Lynyrd Skynyrd 3. Fire On The Mountain - The Charlie Daniels Band 4. Molly Hatchett eponymous debut 5. Carolina Dreams - The Marshall Tucker Band 6. Tre Hombres - ZZ Top 7. Wild Eyed Southern Boys - .38 Special 8. Hurry Sundown - The Outlaws 9. Grey Ghost - The Henry Paul Band 10. Strikes - Blackfoot Honorable mentions would include Greg Allman solo album, Dose by Government Mule, and for most recent the Dixie Highway album by The Outlaws. Great bands all and a genre of music loved more than 50 years by this listener. Thanks again, Martin and Pete for such an enjoyable - and as usual, informative - show. Later added: Tom Petty and the all the Heartbreakers were originally from North Central Florida [my hometown] but moved to California to get a record deal.

I was very happy indeed that you guys acknowledged The Black Crowes one of my favorite bands as well as favorite album Southern Harmony And Musical Companion in your choices for favorite southern albums! Martin Popoff hit the nail right in the head about the brothers Robinson's infamous fights as one of the reasons for their demised ...Furthermore, the constant change in musicians didn't help matters and moreover the changes in musical styles I wasn't aware though that TBC started off as sort of a new wave band. Other great albums that could be concidered southern rock, are the godz nothing sacred, and Brownsville station red album.

Great show as usual...I love Martin’s contrarian teases. So very many fabulous albums in a crowded genre. How about a big shout for those outside the big five? Eric Quincy Tate, Grinderswitch(the late great DJ John Peel even kept “Pickin’ the Blues” as his theme tune through his punk years), Redwing, Dickey Betts’ Great Southern(speaking of which, co-songwriter Don Johnson’s first two albums contain some fun stuff), Wet Willie(not just “Keep On Smilin’”...check out “Manorisms”), Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Stillwater(who finally got their pay day thanks to Cameron Crowe licensing the name for his fictitious band in “Almost Famous”), and Elvin Bishop Group. Anyone with an interest in Southern Rock should check out The Old Grey Whistle Test(theme music “Stone Fox Chase” from Area Code 615) Capricorn Records summer picnic video on KZbin. I have happy memories of swigging large quantities of Jack with Skynyrd(support to Golden Earring) on their first UK tour, and seeing them own a festival crowd of over 100,000 at Knebworth. One year later Atlanta Rhythm Section did the exact same thing supporting Tom Petty,Starship, and Genesis. Have a monster festive break and stay safe everyone.

Wow you guys are missing the boat with Tom Petty. Try Southern Accents, Damn The Torpedoes or Full Moon Fever, all amazing records. Or go for the more mature side of Petty, equally classic... The Last DJ, Wildflowers, and Highway Companion. For all that I've heard you two talk about loving, this was a big surprise to me. Hope you can find the time to give ol' Tom a reassessment. Back in the 70s I wasn't hearing about it, but when I got dragged to a concert in the mid-80s it was a different story and I was hooked. Cheers!

I'm from the UK so can't claim to have a full understanding of the nuances of what is and what isn't Southern Rock but, from the artists I've known and loved since first hearing Sweet Home Alabama, these are the albums that go back to again and again - in no particular order 1. The Black Crowes - The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion 2. Skynyrd - Second Helping 3. Skynyrd - Street Survivors (Tragic that we'll never hear the great music they would have made with Steve Gaines after this one album) 4. ZZ Top - Tres Hombres 5. Allman Brothers Band - Idlewild South 6. Allman Brothers Band - At Fillmore East 7. Drive By Truckers - A Southern Rock Opera 8. Gov't Mule - The Deep End 9. Blackberry Smoke - Little Piece of Dixie 10. Blackberry Smoke - The Whipporwill To my mind, BBS are the band that has grabbed the baton of southern rock and are running with it the best - a great live band as well Thanks for the video guys - off to watch the prog one - if there aren't any Yes albums in there I'll be back on! (PS when I saw BBS at The Roundhouse a few years ago Charlie played a bit of Starship Trooper during Sleeping Dogs - completely unexpected but sounded great)
