4:00 Spain was formed from the kingdoms of Castile (the castle), León (the pink lion) and Navarra (the pattern in the right downwards corner) and the Crown of Aragon (the stripes) which ruled Aragon, Cataluna, Valencia, Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily and southern Italy and the Balearic Islands. Queen Isabella of Castile and León and King Ferdinand of Aragon married on October 19, 1469; in 1492 they finished the conquest of the Emirate of Granada, which they added to their Empire as Kingdom of Granada, which is represented by the small pomegranate at the bottom of the crest. The round field in the middle of the crest shows the crest of the House Bourbon-Anjou (of which the current king is a descendant). Above the crest is the Royal Crown, at both sides the pillars of Hercules (representing the street of Gibraltar) with the motto "Plus Ultra" (roughly "on and on"), which was the personal motto of Emperor Charles V of House Habsburg (Duke of Burgundy and Lord of the Netherlands 1506-1555, King Carlos I of Spain 1516-1556, Archduke of Austria, King in Germany and Holy Roman Emperor 1519-1556) - he was the last Habsburg ruler who united all the Habsburg-ruled countries under his personal rule. He abdicated his different crowns and divided them between his son Philipp II of Spain and his brother Ferdinand of Austria (who was since 1526 also King of Bohemia, Croatia and Hungary) after he had lost his fight against the propagation of Lutheran reformation in Germany, retired in 1557 to a monastery, where he died a year later.

The flag of the Netherlands is the original Red, White & Blue. It dates back to the Dutch war of independence in the 16th century, also known as the Dutch Revolt. The Orange, White & Blue was also used for some time. But due to political struggles, the Red, White & Blue was officially adopted as the one and only national flag. The Russian flag was inspired by the flag of the Netherlands, after Czar Peter the Great visited the Netherlands to learn about the latest technology.

So regarding Norway, we're using a mostly red flag with a white cross to represent our time under Denmark but also a blue one thrown in to represent our time under Sweden. The colours also represents many things in Norwegian nature and culture as well as the typical freedom side of things, being a democracy and all. Iceland basically inverted our flag because they decend from Norwegians, but they use the blue of the glaciers much more then we do. All of the Nordic countries use the nordic cross.

A pity. Lots of flags that I miss here. Scotland, Monaco, Vatican City, Lichtenstein... Small fun-fact: Switzerland is the only country in the world to have a flag that can be attached to the flagpole on all sides because it is square. The coat of arms in the Spanish flag shows the lands of Castile, León, Aragon, Navarre, Granada and in the heart Bourbon-Anjou in the escutcheon. The pillars are those of Heracles with the motto "Plus Ultra". The crown is a royal crown. The coat of arms was introduced on October 19, 1981 and incorporated into the flag. Greetings Magnus

Turk here. The Turkish flag has a very cool and badass story… In mid 1300’s, in a big war, us Ottomans won, but tons of Ottoman soldiers were killed in the war place. The ground had puddles of blood, like a lake. The sultan of that time saw the reflection of the crescent moon with Jupiter shining next to it. And he got the idea to make this image their flag. The red comes from the blood of Ottoman soldiers and the star is actually Jupiter🇹🇷

4:05 The coats of arms represent the medieval kingdoms that united to create Spain: the Kingdom of Castile, the Kingdom of León, the Kingdom of Aragon, the Kingdom of Navarre, and the Kingdom of Granada. The crown on top represents the Spanish Royal Crown. The symbol in the middle represents the House of Bourbon. The 2 pillars on the sides are the Pillars of Hercules. The inscription in the pillars, "Plus Ultra", is a latin phrase and it is the motto of Spain. It means "Further Beyond". It is a reversal of the original phrase "Non Plus Ultra" or "Non Terrae Plus Ultra", meaning "Nothing Further Beyond" or "There is no land further beyond" respectively, which was said to have been inscribed on the pillars of Hercules as a warning, since the pillars marked the edge of the known world in antiquity (the Strait of Gibraltar in the south of Spain, or alternatively, Finisterre in the north of Spain, which literally means "end of the earth", or "Finis Terrae" in latin). The original phrase is reversed in the motto of Spain to suggest instead the notion of taking risks, transforming the warning into encouragement for explorers to defy the limits of the known world. It is an expression of the dynamism of the Spanish Empire.

As other people said in the comments, the colors represents different values for each country. Your reaction to Romanian flag was really cute and quite unexpected for me, as a Romanian. So if you're curious about what those colors represent to us, I'll tell you a bit. Blue represents air/the sky, which also symbolizes faith and religion. Yellow represents richness and the yellow fields of grain (Romania being mostly an agricultural country) and Red represents the blood of our people that we lost in many battles.

I'm French and as a kid, I had a Romanian pen friend during a small period of time (in later 80's, early 90's). In one of my letter, I wanted to make a drawing with a French flag and a Romanian flag with a handshake under them. I found on a book the flag of Romania but the drawing in the middle was too difficult so I just put the colors. I had no idea it was the symbol of the socialist republic. Some years ago I watched a documentary about the Ceausescus and Romanian revolution. I was surprised to see people waving flags with a big hole in the middle and I looked online to saw why. It"s such a strong message sent to those dictators ! It was a very interesting story of my life 😆

Hi ... In Germany it´s absolutely okay to drink water from the tap. During the day, I usually drink only tap-water and some tea for breakfast. Even thou I put 1 cube of sugar to my tea in the morning, I´ve lost 40% weight. ... I am 1,56 metres and 47 kilograms, now. .... I would highly recommend to drink water!

2:21 not red-white-blue for the French flag, but blue-white-red (bleu-blanc-rouge in French). The original signification of the flag dated from the French revolution with the colours of Paris (blue and red), associated with white, meaning the monarchy at that time.

The Romanian flag has 3 colors on it, each color represents a historical region ( Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldavia ). Blue, the color of the sky a symbol for freedom. Yellow, the color of wheat fields a sign of rich bounty and prosperity, it also stands for justice. Red, the color of blood, for the same blood that goes through our veins and unifies our people.

I hope you are joking. 😀 Red, blue and white was standardised as panslavistic tricolora in 19th century, that's why most of slavic countries have these colors. Also, when many today national slavic countries were established as republic, they pretty much followed ideas of French and US revolutions, so use their colors also made some sense because they wanted to accept thise ideas and ideals too.

Why black, red and gold are the colors of Germany The color combination has its origin in the freedom fights in the 19th century Black, red and gold have been the colors of German flags for more than 50 years. Their importance as a symbol of unity, freedom and democracy dates back to the 19th century, but before that these colors officially stood for the German nation only during the Weimar Republic. At the latest since the Hambach Festival in 1832, the color combination black-red-gold has become a symbol of the unity of the German nation. Black-red-gold Black, red and gold have their origin as the national colors in the uniforms of the Lützower Freikorps. This military unit fought in 1813 under the command of the Prussian Major Adolf von Lützow for the liberation from French foreign rule. It consisted of volunteers, mainly students, who dreamed of a united Germany. The uniforms of the volunteer corps were black with red lapels and gold buttons. Even though Lützow chose the colors for more practical reasons - black, for example, was the easiest way to make the volunteers' civilian skirts uniform - black, red and gold became a symbol of the idea of unity. The Freikorps suffered heavy losses in its battles and was almost completely wiped out in a French ambush in June 1813. This brought the volunteer fighters recognition, admiration and adoration among the population. Thus, the positive character of the corps was also transferred to the colors of black, red and gold. Two years later, students who had served in the Lützow Freedom Corps founded the Burschenschaft zu Jena. Frustrated by the failure of the freedom fights, they now wanted to fight on a small scale for their ideal of a united Germany and achieve a union of all German students. For their flag they chose the colors of the Lützowers: black, red and gold. The student movement was well received. Soon, other fraternities were founded in Berlin, Göttingen, Heidelberg and Bonn, following the example of the Jena fraternities - and all of them declared the unity colors as their symbol. The students, along with numerous like-minded individuals, continued to fight against aristocratic rule and for a united Germany, standing up for national and liberal ideals. For example, 40,000 nationally minded students and professors presented their colors at the Hambach Festival in 1832. German unity, however, was a long time coming. The black-red-gold March Revolution in 1848 finally failed. As a result, the colors black, red and gold initially lost their significance, but remained in the minds of Germans as a symbol of the democracy movement. When the North German Confederation was founded in 1866, Otto von Bismarck then opted for a new creation when choosing the colors: black, white and red. Black, red and gold did not reappear until the Weimar Republic after the collapse of the German Empire at the end of the First World War. During this time, a veritable flag controversy flared up, dividing the nation. Democratic-minded people were in favor of black-red-gold, while conservatives and nationalists argued for black-white-red. Finally, the parties agreed on black-red-gold for the new imperial colors. As a compromise, a black-white-red flag with these imperial colors in the upper inner corner was declared the flag of commerce.
