When I saw you reaction to the clip of this which just randomly came up in my suggestions a little while ago I had to sub as it's a show I love (ironically they are doing re-runs of this series on BBC1 over here in the UK at the moment). I've watched a lot of old comedy clips from shows back then & even though they were really funny at the time, the jokes just don't work now. I feel that this show is something of an exception because it is just as funny now as it was then & because of this it has truly stood the test of time. I'm glad you didn't find the part you spoke about offensive as I wasn't sure how you'd take that. The Major is just an eccentric old man who doesn't have any sense of tact but because of this he can be a hugely funny character. I believe the BBC have removed that clip from the episode on Brit Box. I'm really glad you've enjoyed this series so far & hope it has persuaded you to react to the second series.

This episode is a masterclass on writing. The structure is as good as you're ever going to see on screen. One can actually see the line of the script where Basil loses control! I am not aware of any American comedy show with a structure as amazing as this show. It's 46 years old and has never been bettered! By the way, the poor, senile old Major wasn't what we consider racist by today's standards: people of his class sort of talked like that! It was dated even in 1975! John Cleese is a polyglot, he speaks many languages including perfect German!

Your analysis of this episode is excellent. It's sad that people don't get it these days, and don't understand that it's actually taking the piss out of racism and xenophobia, whether it's the Major talking about cricketers or Basil brilliantly spoofing the idea of how so many English people are still obsessed with Who Won The War Anyway (which is still the case even today, with how the right wing media and politicians portray anything to do with the EU and Brexit); in fact this episode is probably even more relevant today nearly 50 years after it was first shown.

I believe you are exactly right that Fawlty was not expecting the Doctor to be black. The UK health service had (and has) a long standing problem of recruiting enough properly qualified doctors and nurses. Some time in the 1960s they started recruiting from Caribbean countries (Jamaica etc). Prior to then a black doctor or nurse would have been a very unusual sight. This episode was filmed only a few years after that policy began, so it's correct that Fawlty would have had no experience of it before.

This is probably true of most sitcoms, but it's especially true of a completely plot-driven farce like Fawlty Towers - watching a famous funny clip is okay (e.g. Basil doing the 'funny walk', David Brent doing the dance in The Office, Del Boy falling through the bar in Only Fools and Horses), but they're always so much funnier in context, when you watch the whole episode and see how and why the characters are doing whatever funny thing they're doing.

It was removed from Brit Box because some people said it was offensive. When i say some people i of course mean idiots on twitter.

What I don't get is that complainers want something banned that they were offended by. But what's the point of that? They've already seen it and have already been offended by it. It can only be to prevent other people seeing something and making up their own mind whether they're offended or not.

@@CoffeeConnected it’s all about how the upper classes feel atm, happens now and then over here, it’s why our streets are currently eternally filled with offended posh ladies demanding police get defunded for controlling their protests whilst simultaneously given more powers to control us uncouth plebs who might like to get to work. Can’t have us enjoying something on the telly that they don’t, goodness, everyone knows their subjective POV should be our god.

You didn't show this part, but in case you were wondering, the German man says to Polly "Gnädiges Fräulein, können Sie mir sagen, wann Mittageßen serviert wird bitte?" (Madam, please could you tell me when lunch will be served?) And she replies, "Um ein Uhr, fünf Minuten." (At 1 o'clock, 5 minutes)

I was watching an interview with John Cleese recently when he was on the Bill Maher programme... and they were talking about jokes you couldn't say anymore... and Bill Maher said something that had John Cleese in stitches when he was talking about Islam. Bill Maher said "Well...Islam is the religion of peace........ There's a piece of you over there and a piece of you over there." LMAO... And John Cleese was in stitches for a good 4 minutes lol.
