Yes, and some say that there's no context in which it's acceptable to use particular words & phrases. So they say that the major's conversation with Basil shouldn't be screened, even though it's clear that the reaction is that the major is a senile old man who says ridiculous things. The 'offending' part has been removed from the ep on iPlayer.
@arconeagain
@arconeagain 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidz2808 the major says things that weren't so outrageous in his time, he doesn't know he's being racist necessarily. Basil's reaction is a measure of a generational change, that things are moving forward, even in the 70s. However, this all falls down in the end, his prejudices come to the fore when he loses his inhibition. Although he does react to the black doctor earlier.

Yes, spot on. This is exactly why John Cleese and Connie Booth wrote the scene this way. You can make fun of racism by putting those thoughts into the mouth of a foolish character. Even Basil's rabid anti-German sentiments are put in a context where the audience can say "No, don't say that!" We're laughing at Basil's bone-headed behavior, not the slurs themselves.

I was gonna say the same thing, you saved me a lot of typing lol ! It's the same kind of thing with another series around the same time which people claim is racist, that being Love Thy Neighbour. The white guy (Eddie Booth) was the butt of the joke because he would make comments his black neighbour (Bill Reynolds), even though he actually got along well enough with him and his wife, he would make black jokes and we would laugh at the stupidity and short-sightedness of Eddie. Bill always got the better of him in the end.

The whole point about the Major is that he is at all times a drunken old fool, who never makes any sense. That it was he used the phrase was absolutely intentional. Along with Till Death us do Part. The racist characters were either nutters, truly obnoxious or both.. certainly not the type of people who you could empathise with. This episode is a masterclass on writing. The structure is as good as you're ever going to see on screen. One can actually see the line of the script where Basil loses control! I am not aware of any American comedy show with a structure as amazing as this show. It's 46 years old and has never been bettered! By the way, the poor, senile old Major wasn't what we consider racist by today's standards: people of his class sort of talked like that! It was dated even in 1975! John Cleese is a polyglot, he speaks many languages including perfect German!

When I saw you reaction to the clip of this which just randomly came up in my suggestions a little while ago I had to sub as it's a show I love (ironically they are doing re-runs of this series on BBC1 over here in the UK at the moment). I've watched a lot of old comedy clips from shows back then & even though they were really funny at the time, the jokes just don't work now. I feel that this show is something of an exception because it is just as funny now as it was then & because of this it has truly stood the test of time. I'm glad you didn't find the part you spoke about offensive as I wasn't sure how you'd take that. The Major is just an eccentric old man who doesn't have any sense of tact but because of this he can be a hugely funny character. I believe the BBC have removed that clip from the episode on Brit Box. I'm really glad you've enjoyed this series so far & hope it has persuaded you to react to the second series.

Your analysis of this episode is excellent. It's sad that people don't get it these days, and don't understand that it's actually taking the piss out of racism and xenophobia, whether it's the Major talking about cricketers or Basil brilliantly spoofing the idea of how so many English people are still obsessed with Who Won The War Anyway (which is still the case even today, with how the right wing media and politicians portray anything to do with the EU and Brexit); in fact this episode is probably even more relevant today nearly 50 years after it was first shown.

You made tons of great points at the end of this. I’m from the south and have known old people (I was just a kid then) who had bad ideas about race at least in part. They wouldn’t have condoned the worst things but would talk bad at times. Anyway chastising them would have made them double down as you say. They have all passed on now anyway. Most southern people have moved past that way of thinking and bluntly put died out. It’s also sad we don’t hear voices like yours more often and instead we get the voices of the media who wanna divide and conquer us all. ✌🏼

Great to see u enjoying all of these comedies. Fawlty Towers! You’ve seen some real good ones so far but yet to see what I view as the greatest single episode of all comedy. That is Communication Problems. Go to the bathroom before watching it otherwise Basil, Manuel, and the brilliant Mrs Richards will make you wet yourself with laughter. Looking forward to your review. Other series you may want to watch are - not the nine o clock news - yes minister and yes prime minister - the young ones (but u must have seen this) - anything by Dave Allen - anything by Jasper Carrott - anything by Billy Connolly - the fall and rise of Reginald Perrin (the original series with the brilliant Leonard Rossitor) - rising damp - porridge ( with Ronnie Barker and Kate Beckinsales father who sadly died at a very young age) -Jeaves and Wooster -Alas Smith and Jones - last of the summer wine - absolutely fabulous - are you being served? -dads army (the original 1970s show) - Happy watching

I believe you are exactly right that Fawlty was not expecting the Doctor to be black. The UK health service had (and has) a long standing problem of recruiting enough properly qualified doctors and nurses. Some time in the 1960s they started recruiting from Caribbean countries (Jamaica etc). Prior to then a black doctor or nurse would have been a very unusual sight. This episode was filmed only a few years after that policy began, so it's correct that Fawlty would have had no experience of it before.

Young Ones is very good and very influential and he probably should watch it; but, I don't know if it would make for a good reaction -- the Rik & Ade stuff aside, there's a Lot of stuff that's of it's time, and not very timeless.

A black doctor would have been rare in the 70s. Basil is shown as a wimp with his fear of the unknown and breakdowns throughout, he's the complete opposite of his much tougher wife, lol

I think though, even in the 70s, they made Fawlty jump back from the black doctor just to add to how out of touch he was. John Cleese is great in interviews, and he does a lot on the US talk show scene.

What I don't get is that complainers want something banned that they were offended by. But what's the point of that? They've already seen it and have already been offended by it. It can only be to prevent other people seeing something and making up their own mind whether they're offended or not.

@@CoffeeConnected it’s all about how the upper classes feel atm, happens now and then over here, it’s why our streets are currently eternally filled with offended posh ladies demanding police get defunded for controlling their protests whilst simultaneously given more powers to control us uncouth plebs who might like to get to work. Can’t have us enjoying something on the telly that they don’t, goodness, everyone knows their subjective POV should be our god.

The first series is currently, (26/03/2021) being repeated. Wonder if it will be edited as a lot of people have claimed it will be. The series was first shown in the autumn of 1975, obviously times change but the joke was ultimately on the major. Similar to Alf Garnett, some people laughed with him, most of us laughed at him, Alf Garnett that is.
