My faviourite Fawty Towers scene: German Guest: "Will you stop talking about the war? Basil: "Me? You started it". German "Guest : We did not"! Basil: "Yes, you did. You invaded Poland" lol That dialogue is up there with Dad's Army's "don't tell him pike", Two Ronnies Fork Handles Sketch and only fools and horses bar scene. The old British comedy is the best. wish they would make comedy like this again - this was hilarious, Im falling off the chair laughing!
@rocistone65705 жыл бұрын
Absolutely no hope of that. FT was "Lightning in a bottle." If they tried to do it again, it would pale against the original. If they tried to modernize it, there would be nothing but a comparison to the original. Futile efforts to copy and repeat success time after time has led Television and all of the media, really into the near constant state of mediocrity we see gushing out in rivers every time the TV is switched on. Better to encourage originality, as if the people who run networks these days would ever allow that.
@jamesthe-doctor89815 жыл бұрын
Yeah, even John Cleese couldn't make comedy like this again. He only did 12 episodes and decided it had run its course. I've always been disappointed that he did so few, but at the same time glad he didn't do so many that it "jumped the shark" like so many of our American sitcoms have done because the creators wanted to milk it for every dollar they could. We all just have to be happy with an even dozen.
@edhoughton26095 жыл бұрын
@@jamesthe-doctor8981 Yes, I agree quality always beats quantity. John Cleese and Connie Booth did actually start writing a third series but they had already exhausted nearly all the comic situations a hotel could offer. I think it was Cleese himself who said that while rehearsing a particular scene for the third series, he, Connie Booth and Prunella Scales just stopped midway through it and looked at each other, realising: "this just isn't funny." So - twelve episodes is all we have, but they are all priceless gems and we have to be happy with that.
@pflaffik4 жыл бұрын
It would have to be nothing like FT then. All attempts to copy great humor has failed miserably, like the British version of Impractical Jokers, it was so boring and pathetic that everything british became repulsive.

God, I loved this show...even my wife laughed at this one. Used to have tiny voice file snippets that I kept on my computer at work that I would work into conversations with other employees...my fav is when Polly is standing behind Basil's wife, pantomiming the name of a horse that Basil allegedly bet on, and between her movements and pointing at Sybill, Basil comes up with, "Flying Tart"...

I’ve watched a lot of sitcoms on both sides of the Atlantic - and even accepting differences in taste and delivery of comedy between Americans and the British - for my money this is the best comedy ever. Truly ever. I’ve watched Communication Problems probably 100 times and I still laugh out loud, it’s that good! Cleese is terrific and the late Andrew Sachs (Manuel) were among the many highlights of this series. My biggest complaint is that they didn’t make more of the damn episodes, sad that a little separation and divorce prematurely ended one of the best sitcoms ever written and produced. Some of the jokes are outdated today but so much is not (“are you Aw-rally men?”)
@jeffsullivan20443 жыл бұрын
As Connie Booth and John Cleese remained friends after their divorce, I don't believe that was the reason for the shows demise.

This is my go-to video when I’m feeling down. Even though I’ve seen it soooo many times and could recite it verbatim, it still cracks me up every time. Ballard Berkeley’s confusion about the talking moose head runs a very close second to John Cleese’s exaggerated goose stepping. Sheer comedy magic that has never been bettered imo.

Having watched both parts, amazed the bedroom scene in Communication Problems didn't make the list where Basil was asking Mrs Richards what she expected to see out of a hotel window in Torquay. Also, most of the scenes with Bernard Cribbins in the Hotel Inspectors were absolute classics. What a great show, 11 top class episodes and the underwhelming 'Anniversary' episode stopping it from being complete perfection.
