I had the opportunity, by chance, during the "Heineken Music Festival" at Hong Kong Coluseum, to play guitar for Faye Wong, who was one of the international acts performing while my father, the late, great Larry Muhoberac was conductor. Faye's guitarist just didn't show up, so I was given 8 hours to learn all her material at the last minute. She was a great person, so lovely, kind, humble and appreciative. I wish I would have continued her tour. The other acts were "WU BAI", "Boys 2 Men", "All 4 One", Sheryl Crow, PAUL YOUNG, list goes on. Did it from 1996-1999 firstly so I'm not sure what year this was. It's originally written by COCTEAU TWINS (another favourite).

I am from the US. And I cannot understand a word of what she is saying. But I think she is the best singer in the world. Maybe it is because I also think she ls.the most beautiful singer in the world. No, scratch that. I meant the most Beautiful woman in the world. This is the Cantonese version called 給自已的情書, the Mandarin version is called 笑忘书 and has slightly different lyrics to fit with the music.

The world usually get mixed with Chinese language. There are 2 dominant Chinese language at the moment, Mandarin and Cantonese. Popular movies usually are from Hong Kong and it's Cantonese, not Mandarin. Cantonese is around 2000 years old, while Mandarin only around 800 years old. Which is why, Chinese poems read in Cantonese are nice to hear and songs have 9 tones in Cantonese than the 4 mono tones Mandarin, every1 can sing easily in Mandarin, but to sing a good songs in Cantonese is hard :)

@zin814 You are correct that in general Cantonese and Mandarin speaking people use the same writing, just different pronounciation. As Thruths pointed out, there are exceptions In the case of lyrics though, this song was written so that both Canto + Mando people would understand, but because of pronounciation differences, the song may not flow if lyrics was written for Canto and singer tries to sing in Mando. Think poet choosing words based on how they sound. That's why 2 version is needed.
