Critical Thinking: Complex Arguments, Unstated Premises

I have seen a lot of teachers rant about the ability of students to think critically. The funny part is that even when they try to get us to think they still end up spoon feeding everyone the answers. Maybe this has to do with their fixation on test results. The ability to come to a well developed answer isn't what our standardized tests are grading on. Anyway, Thank You for explaining these concepts in such an understandable way. It has helped in so many ways. I still have much to learn.

This is great stuff! Why was this never taught to me in my previous 3 years of High School? I don't understand why people would expect us to go through one of the most critical times in our lives without the tool of Critical Thinking.

Dr. Sadler, I love you. I have spent the last three nights trying to work out why my numerical standardisation of the exercises I have been given in my course were not working. I was having issues with impicit premises and conclusions of arguments and counterarguments, I now realise. As you were doing the examples on the board, I was seeing the numerical standardisation. I have lived off your videos to guide myself through my university philosophy elective - for which I accidentally registered. I caught myself answering your questions out loud as if I were attending in person. I dress in suit and tie or jacket and tie most of the time that I teach -- even when I taught in prisons. The reason is that, in my view, it helps to convey that we are engaged in something important, worth paying attention to, etc.

This whole series of lectures may be put on my subreddit called the Autism_Warriors, specifically for people in the mental health profession to watch; because the staff that treat people use illogical thoughts, they go by feeling and they make decisions using fallacies constantly. It would also help those people fight against these corrupted mental health staff. You see psychologists etc abhor thinking in this way (particularly counselors etc), and that is why they are the bane of my life!

Well. . . we typically don't teach it in high school at all (unfortunately) -- though plenty of teachers claim to be doing "Critical Thinking" with their students.

Make coffee then brew a few flavored tea bags in it for a bit. I add no sugar because it's in my creamer... My creamer is whipped cream whipped with dark chocolate nut butter with flax seed milled whipped into the whipped cream then whip it into the coffee tea. It's so good. I used blueberry honey tea mixed with a mint tea bag. Delightful. I like being random. Have a good day y'all.

Yes, the reliance on a poor tool -- standardized, for the most part multiple-choice, tests -- is a real problem. The big issue, of course, is that we do need to have some sort of accountability for teachers and for institutions -- there has to be some kind of assessment of student learning going on. BUT, the current means of assessment were poorly thought out, and have introduced still more deep-running problems over the last decades

I need to know this for high school. By chance I stumbled onto critical thinking to try and push up my marks. We are asked to do this, but we don't actually get taught to do it. Not like this.

Well. . . that's a good question. Why isn't CT taught in High School? Tow main reasons, I think. The first is that -- without actually knowing what CT is or how it would be taught -- many teachers in other disciplines claim to be teaching it in their classes. Odds are. . . they're not. The second is that -- because of how things fell out in our educational system -- as opposed to many others -- we just don't usually teach philosophyclasses in HS, except (rarely) as an elective

Wow...... paradoxes always leave me untamed. How about there are 4 people .... 3 sons and 4 fathers is that plausible.
