In this lecture from his Fayetteville State University Critical Thinking class, Dr. Sadler returns thematically to the concept of argument forms, providing some examples, distinguishing content and form, and discussing how looking at the form can help students determine whether and argument is deductive or inductive.

Yep. FSU was a very low-tier university in the UNC system, serving mainly underprepared students. Tough place to work and teach. Safe to say, very few people, students included have a very high opinion of FSU. I can say, though, that in my three years there (I'm now up in New York), I did my part in making it a better place for students in a few ways, hopefully ways that had some "staying power"

There are some excellent historically black colleges and universities, and it would appear that before desegregation FSU was quite good and had a solidly prepared student body. Desegregation actually made it more difficult to recruit across the entire spectrum of student preparedness and achievement from the 1970s on, because the stronger students would then simply go to the larger, more elite state schools. The founders of FSU were well-educated and incredibly persistent teachers.

Well, you know, I have not been at FSU, teaching this class, for over a year now. I'm developing a new, much more comprehensive Critical Thinking class and textbook, and will roll it out via my own channel when it's fully finished. That will have links to resources as well

I'm just seeing this now -- I left FSU over a year ago, and these vids are in the FSU channel, rather than my own (where you can find 100+ other philosophy videos) I don't have an online course, but I'm in the process of developing one. As far as order, if you go to the playlists in which you'll find these vids, they're in a particular order

I also attend college in California and I have a mid-term Monday! I'm confused about a lot, however this video did come in handy, and it clarified a lot.

Dr.Sadler, When discussing the validity, would it be better to say for the premises " If you accept them as true" rather than "if they are true"" then... To me saying the latter implies they can be possible in real world, but the examples in the lecture do not allow for that possibility, for example " all professors are dilligent"

Dr.sadler I'd like to know if any deductive argument that's invalid is an inductive argument? Without the word probable, likely etc

Or an invalid argument is just an element of deductive argument

I've never looked at McInerny's book. Copi is a classic. Hurley is pretty good as well

Dr. Sadler doesn't seem to have a very high opinion about this university :P.

Indeed, I looked it up on the ever reliable Wikipedia, and the first thing it says is "historically black". Considering America's history of segregation, that can't be a good sign.
