FBI identifies 20-year-old as suspect in Trump rally shooting

Moments into a rally at a fairground in Butler County in Pennsylvania, pops of gunfire echoed across the crowd. Former president Donald Trump's ear was grazed by a bullet as the gunman fired shots from a nearby rooftop. The shooter was killed by Secret Service agents. He has been identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthews Crooks of Bethel Park, Pa.

This can easily happen because coverage of such a large area involves close Law Enforcement cooperation, the roof sightline was obscured. These planned political events are not confirmed with a lot of advance notice, the candidate usually has a choice of rally's to attend not just one. Secret Service protection does not increase until after the political conventions.........Congress made that rule. So the Secret Service protection is less at this point than it will be post convention.

I'm a cop. Trump came to my county to visit once at a natural disaster. Secret service called ahead and activated the SRT to be on perimeter/stand by. They met us at Lowes home improvement and we're wearing the Lowes home improvement vests. They gave us a map and it had colored zones. They told us if anything happens to stay out of a particular colored zone or we were gone get it too lol. We were responsible for the perimeter only. However, the secret service as a job sucks and notoriously has a ton of turnover, and they tend to get by without much incident. That can potentially breed complacency. Any of these rallies are a fucking nightmare for the secret service so I'm surprised this hasn't happened more often. There are 2 theories right now: 1- He hated/obsessed over/etc Trump and wanted to delete him, or 2- The more interesting one is that he deliberately grazed Trump to boost his ratings because he believed in Trump so much that he was willing to die to get him elected... and maybe someone in Trump's camp was in on it. Secret Service protection is increased after the political convention. Congress made these rules a long time ago. Obviously they need to be updated. It is a very large rural area and the Secret Service has to coordinate with local and state law enforcement to cover it all. I would blame security but not necessarily the Secret Service due to their constraints which were via the Congress.
