This video shows a simulation of a cylindrical solid subjected to displacement controlled compression loading. Equiaxed grain microstructure with random texture is assumed with a grain size of approximately 0.2 of the cylinder's diameter. Two material models are compared: FCC crystal plasticity and von-Mises isotropic plasticity. The elastic deformation is in both cases assumed isotropic. Clearly, the von-Mises model is unable to capture the plastic anisotropy due to the presence of grains. FCC crystal plasticity model is a more physical representation of the dislocation slip with the resolution of individual slip systems in each grain resulting in plastic anisotropy.
