If anyone purchases this, you’ll be successful putting it together because of this video. The directions that come with this composter is a waste of trees, so I’ll be shredding the instructions for the composter for sure! Pause in between each step, and follow his instructions exactly, and I couldn’t of put this together without your video. Thank you so much for helping me assemble this perfectly!

I’d bought mine at a garage sale (no manual) for like $5 and the bees took to it immediately. By the time I got to composting again the bees had squatting rights weren’t going anywhere and I wasn’t about to, ya know, kill them. I’ve just recently had the bee hive which had completely filled one side removed, they were taken to the “bee farm”. The other side is still filled with brown clippings. So I move it to a different area. The bees did do me a favor and plugged some of the holes. Looking forward to getting this thing rolling now. Enjoyed your video! Learned lots! Thank you

Small tip: mulch your brown material first using a lawnmower, then store in a drum. It will do the equivalent of a food processor and will help create compost much faster.

I just got this composter thanks to a neighbor who found it on the street for the garbage man. So it was a freebee! Your video was very informative on usage, thank you. I have a tiny garden so I think this will serve me well. I will have to re-watch the video because I didn't write down the ratios of green and brown. I will pay closer attention next viewing. Again thanks.

I just got this compost bin 2 days ago and got it built. It's still winter here in Pa with false spring every other day.. lol.. but to anyone questioning what you should put in this bin, I started with the box it came in.. lol I took what little tape there was off the box ripped it up, threw some of it in with some kitchen scraps. Since we have snow on the ground and I can't get to the grass just yet 🙄 but in 2 days it'll be 70 degrees again 🙄 but anyway the best materials to start with is the box itself and scraps from the kitchen, I got a bag of already aged manure and added some of that to get things going a bit. I'm finding that using the boxes from those Amazon purchases will work for this. It'll make hiding my purchases a lil easier 😂😂Just make sure it's not glossy cardboard like cereal boxes, or diaper boxes, just stick with all brown boxes. My only disappointment is going to be the smaller amount of compost I will get. I mean I know that breaking down means smaller particles but I didn't realize just how little the final compost amount would be. figured that between both chambers it would at least fill half of the bucket. But it seems it was way less than that. But some is better than none!! Can't wait to see the results!!

Great information. I live near the Gulf Coast, so a very humid climate. My use of an in ground composter was less than successful due to infestation with bugs and ants eating most of the wet scraps. Will try a rotating tumbler now. My problem is a lack of dry material since live oak leaves are not good in compost and our neighborhood is nothing but those trees!

Great video and excellent presentation! Unfortunately, I had already assembled the tumbler before I saw it. However, it was comforting to know that I assembled it correctly. Being fairly new to composting, I was especially happy to see you actually put your compost together as well as the explanations and the tips given. I live in southwestern Colorado and have the same alkaline soil and arid climate as you. I did not realize that the dry climate would be such a negative factor and am wondering if you have any other ideas or tips to utilize this tumbler to the best of its ability in my climate. Thanks in advance for anything you can suggest.

Personally I find chasing the moisture content in this tumbler to be way more work than it’s worth in our dry climate. A compost pile on the ground holds its moisture content in the bottom half fairly well, especially if you cover it with spoiled hay.

New subscriber here, and thanks for this very informative video. I picked up one of these tumblers yesterday (used) from someone on one of my social media platforms for $25.00 and was very excited to finally get one. Something I did notice you saying, is that it will leak and to make sure you don't have it on a finished concrete patio, because it would stain it. Something I thought that would work wonderfully is placing one of those boot trays underneath to catch the drippings, that way you could easily slide it out and place the liquid into a container for 'compost tea' watering. That way it's not wasted. Just a thought, because that's what I plan on doing! Stay safe and thanks again.

Assembly is a pain in the rear but not difficult. I'm in AZ and it works pretty well, I don't have any complaints. It goes a lot quicker if the stuff going in is small. I've seen people put large chunks of vegetables in the tumblers and they take a lot longer to break down. Take a few minutes to chop up the vegy chunks and you will be a lot happier. It's really important to get the green/brown amounts correct or the compost will struggle. I made the mistake at first of putting in too much green and I was getting balls of rotten matter rather than good compost. I got the ratios corrected and the compost ended up beautiful. I haven't struggled with moisture problems as the reviewer did but I add stuff to it every couple of days. I think he started his and didn't add anything to the process so it would probably dry out. I'm happy with it, I think I may get another one, or a larger one.

Thank you for a great video and thank you too for not talking too fast! I hate to disappoint below commenters but I had no problems putting this together last year, and I am a 73 year-old woman and I did it by myself; I just took my time. I used the box it came in to use as a prop and hold up the bin while assembling. A year later my compost is still very moist, and I am still adding to it on one side, leaving one side to finish by itself. I am adding more brown material now, however, since results seem so moist. I live in Hawaii, on the island of Oahu. Thank you again for your great video and taking the time to share it with os.

I have a second-hand YIMBY in eastern Ontario. The inside can dry out but isn't not hard to keep moist, often by opening the cover during rainstorms. It handled winter cold-snaps well, maybe because it is made in Canada, but the sliding cover is predisposed to freeze shut. It can develop rust on the supports, so it's probably better to keep those on footings above the wet ground.

Hi Mike, thank you for all the time and effort you took making this video. I have this unit in hot, humid central florida and often leave it in the sun to potentially increase the heat but it isn't necessary. The brown to green ratio, if followed, heats up and breaks down nicely. I wonder if your moisture level would stay more constant if you placed your unit in the shade. Another idea, wrap in a wet blanket. Thanks again.

Great suggestion. I did place it on the north end of the house where it had only partial morning sun and still struggled to keep up the moisture level. I never thought of using a wet blanket.

I'm not sure how many people watch this anymore since its now 3 years old. But I looked for videos on the tumbler & it later showed up in my video feed so im guessing people still get it. I wanted to comment on the leakage from the tumbler. I'm not sure how its possible that noone as mentioned this but speaking of this anyone not taking advantage of this you are missing out. What comes off of your compost when watered is called "compost tea" this in itself is used as a fertlizer boost to your plants. It comes out black & gorgeous for your plants. Just fill a watering can ½ to ¾ full then add water because it can be quite strong & can damage your plants. I water at the base of my plants then follow with a good plain water drink. I put a large bowl & a old coffee can under the 2 main places it tends to leak from with a dollar tree mesh strained popped inside to prevent anything from going inside or leave it off & get a bonus. Slugs seem to be attracted to the smell & find their way inside & drowned so when you strain it out through the strainer you find them dead inside (YaY less slugs eating my plants) & I get to use them again. Because you can leave them inside your can or old bowl to continue to break down or toss them, but remember they are matter & will add to your compost & or tea. I produce quite a bit of this since I water every 2-3 days so I save & collect milk jugs & odd bottles like the heavier plastic lemonade bottles or similar & keep it as a free fertlizer for my plants all season. So dont throw away this black gold your wasting a free side product when you can get 2 products for the time & effort of 1. Hope this helps someone. Much L❤VE from Kentucky!

I really appreciate your video. I assembled my tumbler a few days ago before I came across your video, but still had no trouble at all. FCMP has a website with more assembly tips that were not included in my package. My box did not include the composting information, sadly. I'm gardening in southern CA...dry and hot climate, as well, so I am hoping it will work for me. Thanks for your information. Great job!!!

Humm....on the unit I purchased, the black plastic rod cover is in one long piece, smooth all the way across, WITHOUT the center and end raised bumper/KEEPER portions like what it appears i see in your video. I am certainly hoping that does not effect the functionally and durability of my unit. 🤞🏼 I do not live in a humid climate, northern part of Utah, so I am also hoping it serves me well. A bit worried about freezing in the winter, will probably have to be sure it is empty before freeze and revert back to the compost pit option for winter.

Great video! Just note that used coffee grounds serve to feed worms and may improve soil structure. Only unused or fresh grounds increase acidity. Add sulfur or blood meal to truly increase acidity. :)

The optimal moisture level is the “consistency of a rung out sponge” so keep your material close to that and you should be good. Thank you, Chris, for your kind comments.

Thank you for your video and all your time putting into it. I notice you didn't use any waste food. I bought this tumbler because everyday I take out a lot of organic waste. What will be the ratio for the rest of the other elements. Do I really need to water them as well? Do I also need to put the starter? Thanks in advance for you help.

My composter will arrive tomorrow and after watching your video I feel better about putting it together and using it. I live in Tennessee - humid with a lot of rain. My yard had been planted with Bermuda grass and also has loads of weeds. Can I still use the grass clippings? I definitely don't want any of those growing in my garden. Also, is it better to have it located in full sun or shade? I might have missed that part in the video. Know I'll need to watch again.
@houseonthemend

Full sun if you are putting weed clippings that have gone to seed. You’ll want maximum heat and it sounds like your humid climate will help keep it moist.

Hey there! Thank you for this video.Tomorrow is assembly day! I'm in the northeast so exceptionally humid here. Quick question. You had a great tip with the nail polish for the screws.👍However, do you have any suggestions for the weep holes that leak compost juice either before, during or after assembly? I'm sure someone has asked but it's hard to sift through 300+ comments.
@houseonthemend

The weep holes are plentiful. There’s really no way around them other than Flex Seal or its’ equivalent.
