@@stevet8607 I'm sorry for the extremely late reply, those valvetronic motors rarely go bad. Put a sensor in it. It'll fix your issue, obviously to be 100percent sure it would have to be tested. Awesome video! I have put nearly 100,000 miles on my n52 after buying it with 105,000, and I run it hard! ... I take care of it though; I warm it up, change the oil, etc. Absolute awesome engine. A true gem and the last of it’s kind from BMW. To add: It’s easy to mistake oil leaks around the valve cover gasket area. As Gareth mentioned, there are several areas on the valve cover gasket that can leak, so if you can rather than just replacing the valvtronic motor gasket or the valve cover gasket, etc., it could be the oil separator which happens to manufactured/integrated into the valve cover. It’s very difficult to differentiate where the leak is coming from, especially when there’s potential for the leak to be located in the middle of the valve cover where the spark plugs are located. Since all of these issues associated with the valve cover are common, I recommend replacing the whole assembly and saving yourself the hassle of trying pinpoint the exact leak point.

Thanks for the overview, Gareth! I've had to replace all of those items on my N52s except for the VANOS items (fingers crossed we are good there). But at 200k+ miles, my E60 has never run better. The E70 is hanging in well, too. Excellent info! Have already addressed a number of these components on our 2010 X3. The oddest one was: we bought the car with a bad oil filter housing gasket. It had been leaking for a very long time. The whole front of the engine was saturated in oil. Replaced that and bought a new serpentine belt. Was kind of lazy and didn't get around to replacing it. During one long trip, the belt completely shredded itself. luckily it didn't take out the bushing mentioned. The moral of the story, replace an oil-saturated belt no matter how good of shape it looks. This one looked fine.

Thanks for all the help. My son has an 08 328i, 6 spd manual. 182k miles, previous owner completed most of the common failure parts, and kept it serviced properly. Still running strong, and is a super clean example inside and out. I love driving it when he lets me. I’m more of a motorcycle guy (and boring Toyota cars), but it is a blast handling the country roads. Had 1 bolt fall out of the power steering pump pulley and another one loose. Caused the serpentine belt to wobble and start to get shredded. Luckily he pays attention to noises and caught it before it broke completely. Got the bolts, belt and pulleys/tensioner from you all. Was an easy repair. Had the starter go also. Got the new (not reman) Bosch from you all also for a great price, along with the needed bolts and gaskets. Used your guys blog instructions to replace, very detailed and helpful. Wasn’t mechanically difficult, but was a lot to remove to get to it. great video! 2006 bmw x3 129k miles it was sitting for 5 years until i bought it. it has a bucking hesitation while accelerating in 3rd 4th and 5th gear ( manual ) but no check engine light. also intermittent misfire on cold starts. could it be a vanos issue? its never been serviced yet.

Can I get an update on the engine? I’m considering one and want to know how many miles/problems you’ve run into?
@chrisscott30012 жыл бұрын
@@jason9875 I'm still driving my beamer. I got it at 130,000 miles. Now it's at 152,000 miles. I've had no major problems with the n52 engine. The only problem I have had is a leaking valve cover gasket. That's a very common problem on BMW engines though. The only real problem I had was within my cars suspension. When I bought it the previous owner had it lowered on coilover suspension which made the rear tires staggered. It was just eating up the inside rear tire tread. I put the car back on stock suspension and it's been smooth riding and even tires since! 🤘😎

Nice to watch a video on not very popular engines. I’ve done almost completely everything so that makes me fell much better. Last to do is the oil pan gasket, water pump and oil filter housing gasket. None of have gone bad yet but I like going preventative maintenance
@SalTheSneakerHead4 жыл бұрын
Also! Keep in mind I changed all but the 3 listed at around 135k or more miles so the n52 is a super reliable engine if cared for properly

There were tons of these sold. What do you mean not very popular? There are more out there than N54. Maybe they aren't popular in the enthusiast community.

So, bottom line is don't go 22,000 miles on your oil like the CBS will allow you to do. I drive mostly highway, but I won't go past 8,000 miles between changes. I've already done the oil filter housing gasket, which is a piece of cake. I'm steeling myself for the VC gasket and oil pan gasket, which I will eventually have to do. Thanks for doing this series on the last naturally aspirated BMW engine. It's a great motor, if you take care of it.
@fcpeuro4 жыл бұрын
We agree Doug, take care of your N52 and it will reliably take care of you. Staying on top of basic routine maintenance is key, and doing some of the preventative problem areas we discussed in this video will help. The oil pan gasket certainly isn't a fun job, but its very doable.

Got my own n52 328i right before the pandemic made the car market go nuts. Can confirm have had to do almost all the maintenance mentioned. Valve cover gasket was leaking, so was the eccentric motor and sensor seals. Oil filter housing seal also was failing. Ended up getting a new belt and pulleys at the same time (car was at 65k when I got it, closer to 73-74 rn) plus changed out the "mickey mouse" fitting on the oil filter housing with an aftermarket metal replacement. It now runs like a top and with no leaks to boot. But between all that and doing the plugs and coils (switched to the eldor's while I was at it) and tires it has cost me a pretty penny. But for a Montego Blue 328i with only 65k on it, I think all in I have paid 7k for the car and about 2k in maintenance. 9k all in for a sorted bmw ain't bad. Besides the front struts failing from living on a dirt road lmao

There’s an e92 328i I’m looking at that has had almost all the mentioned maintenance done, he’s asking $9k. 97000 miles, auto. I can negotiate with him I’m hoping to get it for around 7-7.5, but do you think that’s a decent deal?

Thanks for this! Every e90 owner should watch this. I really appreciate your content and learned a bunch from you dude! From brakes and rotors to sensors and pretty much a lot of bmw related stuff. I currently have no heat in mine and I suspect a heater control valve or a clogged heater core, I was wondering if you knew the Inner diameter of a hose needed to back flush the heater core? That would help a lot. Again thanks a lot for all the priceless information for us DIYers!!

Thanks for the info and I would like to find out, I am driving a 2007 E90 325i and it sounds like a diesel. My mechanic believes it is an oil pump not working properly. Can you please advise?
@fcpeuro4 жыл бұрын
You're welcome, Papillion. If your N52 sounds like a diesel, worst case is that it could be a failing oil pump, however it could also be a faulty hydraulic valve lifer. If it is the valves making the noise, you can try some LIQUI MOLY Hydraulic Lifter Additives to see if it quiets the engine down. www.fcpeuro.com/products/hydraulic-lifter-additive-300ml-liqui-moly-lm20004

replaced water pumps in several n52s and n51... never a logic board failure, always gummed up and hard to spin (probably due to wrong coolant). n51 was first replaced at 200k miles. I’m having a crank no start issue, no codes for any sensors like the ones mentioned, and it seems like my DME and EWS is not talking to each other. My key fob works but my scanner won’t communicate with all of the modules. Like it won’t let me perform some active test because “it can’t communicate” but other things like door locks and stuff can be actuated. Do you believe I need a new DME? How would I know?

Hi excellent Video and Explanation in depth, professional video!! I have a question.... i drive a 2013 bmw x5 35i, 3,0 turbo with 138.000 kilometers,This is a N55 engine right?? does this engine have these same "Inhereted" problems or are the revisions have "fixed" all of these issues with older engines ?? Also @1115 you mentioned "cold start rpm fluctuating ? i just purchased this vehicle 5 months with no problems on startup and only just now recently i notice that when i start this engine cold in the mornings, it surges up and down between 750----1250 rpm for about 10 Seconds and almost shut down, After that it idles and warms up normally without any problems for the rest of the day, but it only happen when the temperature is 2 degrees or close to freezing, i live at east coast of Canada ty for input

On some models changing the oil pan gasket is a nightmare as you have to drop the subframe. I have heard of a shortcut where you cut the gasket in a convenient place so you can snake it in place and cover the joint with RTV. Any thoughts on that (other than the expected "don't do it" 🙂)?

Oil leaks are a right of passage???? I’m about to pull the trigger on a 2006 325i but I’m not trying to buy something that is gonna leak. I’ve had Benz’s for years and don’t have issues. Is this a common thing for BMW? I HAVE to up grade the oil gasket and I’ll be fine?
@saganworshipper60624 жыл бұрын
These are certainly all the things I need to watch out for. I bought my 2008 328xi 6MT about a year ago with 83k miles on it. All I know is it was a 1 owner car with no accidents but I have no idea if anything has been replaced on the car other than the previous owner had all of the recalls done. So far I have been lucky that all I've had to do is put gas in it. I had my mechanic look the car over when I first got it and the only thing he saw was a tiny oil leak from the oil pan gasket but there is never a drop on the ground so hopefully that doesn't get too bad too soon because he said it is a several hour job because of the x-drive. So I guess my only question is, do I just wait for parts to fail or would you be proactive at this point and start to change things? I now have 86K on it. (I live right down the street from my work so I don't put a lot of miles on it) For example, I have no idea if the plugs have ever been changed or what type of oil it's run on for it's life. Would it be a mistake to put LiquiMoly in it or Mobile 1 if it's only had conventional oil in the past? This is my first BMW and the car still looks pristine and I would like to keep it running as smooth as it currently does. Also, I live in Wallingford, CT and you guys are great!
@fcpeuro4 жыл бұрын
Hey Sagan glad 328xi ownership has treated you well thus far! We always suggest staying on top of your cars maintenance and preventing possible issues from arising that can prove to create bigger issues. That being said its not necessary to throw every part in the book at the car. Sitting right around the 80k mark is really where we most commonly see things start to go. For now swapping the plugs, potentially throw in in a engine flush and some fresh LiquiMoly or another high quality oil simply cannot hurt (our most common www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-oil-change-kit-5w40-e60-e90-e82-f30-11427566327kt-lm ). Glad to hear you are local, be sure to swing by the retail center in Milford if you havent already (well once the current situation clears up)! From there just stay in tune with what your car is doing, dont let things go, once you notice an issue move to the remedy (your cooling system especially at that mileage).
