FE Model 7 Siren, Requested Sound Off, Oronoco, MN (First run in 20+ years)

Well yesterday we came her for a noon blast but we figured out they didn't do them anymore, but luckily we stuck around a bit after noon and around 12:10 a volunteer at the Oronoco VFD showed up, and so we asked him if he could set it off and he was very kind and let us run it up a few times. This siren is used as a backup but has not been used sense the 2001-SRN-3G was installed down the street. The radio is still there and the old timer is still there for noon blasts but they keep the breaker off. As you can see at the beginning we push the test button on the AR timer a few times but all you hear is the motor starter, if you look into the stator you can see tons of sticks and dirt. It took a few tries to get the motor woundup and get everything out, and as you can see there was a lot in it! But that's just what happens when it sits for 20 years and gets tons of birds nests in it. Anyways, we did some growls, some manual fast wail (done by yours truly), short alert, and 1 cycle of attack. Enjoy!

@@Fratt4008 The hissing was the dust, the bearings are just stiff because it hasn't ran for 20 years. If you ran that thing for a good 1 1/2 minute of alert or attack it would sound just fine after it ran for a good bit

Yes they are! There's an OLD Model 5 in Old Forge, PA that was sitting for over 40 years, with lots of debris in it, and MAN that thing wound up like it was new! Especially since the debris came out when the siren started up for the first time since 1976, when it was last used. It still sounds today for fire calls and a test daily at 6 PM

My town had an Erick siren from the 1920’s that hadn’t been tested since the 1960’s. It activated itself in 2004 and ran for several minutes before they found a way to shut it off.

At 0:23 you can see the majority of the dirt, dust, leaves, and twigs that restricted the motor from turning. At first, it looked as if it was permanently stuck since it would not move at first. Never have seen a siren put out so much dust and dirt. It's bound to build up dirt being idle for so long.

I have a rare prototype thunderbolt siren that hadn't been activated in 29 years! And it was finally activated and they put the box of a actual thunderbolt siren in the prototype and it sounds like a beast compared to when it activated for the first time 29 years ago

You can't kill these old federal sirens, if you take care of them and test them weekly they will last forever. Unfortunately many departments have let them die on the vine (sort of) but as you can see after sitting for 20 years she came back to life. These sirens are much better than anything we have today. The 2001 SRN-3G pales in comparison.
