@@heyitzmae and part of it is even mixed in with the lullaby her mother wrote, which definitely evokes the feeling that Rhea fell to the dragon degeneration common in several FE games that occurs if a dragon goes too long without sleeping for extended periods of time (particularly if they are in dragon form). So you have to kill a sad, desperate woman who literally drove herself to the brink of degeneration trying to keep Fodlan safe from Agartha while desperately wishing to see her mother once more, only to finally succumb to it the moment she is finally free from Agartha and beginning to accept that her mother is gone.

God, what a tragic end to this route. I love that they make sure you remember this is far from a raging battle you want to fight, by making each battle a somber piece to the roaring tragedy being played out in front of you, and the complete inability to do anything to prevent it other than to kill the very person you bled, sweat, cried, and killed for, not to mention the very last major leader still alive in Fodlan.

Andrew J i mean yeah, but Rhea lost like 90% of her family and their murderers used their bones, hearts and blood as weapons. Plus Byleth has difficulty expressing emotion anyway so they are different. Besides if you side with Edelgard, Rhea basically sees you as Nemesis part 2: Dragon Murder Boogaloo.

For me, this was the most upsetting battle since being forced to kill Mustafa. Like with him, it wasn't cool or happy or fun. You kill a man who built bird houses and cared for others like family. Rhea did a lot of bad things, but she lost it all and coped by trying to bring her mother back. Even when that failed, she was still proud of Byleth for becoming who he grew to be. She saw him more fit to lead because he made Sothis' power his own. All she wanted was peace in Fodlan after Nemesis, the 10 Elites, and the Agarthans slaughtered her people and brought war to Fodlan. She told lies and changed history, sure, but that isn't anywhere as bad as defiling the dead bodies of someone's loved ones and using their bones and hearts as weapons to kill others. Nemesis literally fights her with her mother's spine for god's sake. Then after all that, after finally killing Edelgard, she goes berserk after you take out the Agarthans and you have to kill her. That is why I don't hate Rhea's character or blame her for what she did. It's not like she sided with the people that ruined her life to force Fodlan to change in her image.

My suggested order for the routes: 1. Azure Moon: The intense character development helps make the world come to life and immerse you in it, but leaves a lot of unanswered questions to encourage another playthrough 2. Verdant Wind: Expands the world even further by involving countries beyond Fodlan, gives you more lore and makes you really start to question the status quo 3. Crimson Flower: See Edelgard's side of the story, and a totally different side of Rhea 4. Silver Snow: Fight Edelgard after already going through the experience of having her as your student. Rhea voluntarily faces the music over her misdeeds and goes mad as a result. Give closure to Rhea's story, one way or another.

See, the thing is that everyone has their preferred order but one of the best and most beautiful things about the storytelling of this game is that the routes can be played in any order and while they all give different overall experiences, no order is any more or less valid than any other order, only different. I did silver snow first and finding out that the flame emperor was my own student and then with relatively little info to go on, having to make the decision to abandon her in favor of what seemed like the right thing at the time is the one part of the entire game that stands out to me more than anything else. I literally think it was one of the hardest and most emotionally charged decisions I’ve ever made in a video game, and that’s an experience that can only be had if silver snow is your first route. That was my personal experience, but no matter which order you go in, you get a unique experience that can change your experience in subtle but powerful ways. My only regret is that I can only ever have one “first” order.

@@Felidisasta I just beat my Silver Snow today, and the finishing blow on Rhea was also a crit from Byleth. Except mine was a normal hit, it was a really low crit chance. I think Rhea does have an ability that reduces crit chance, since normally my Byleth had around 20-40 crit, but against rhea it was just 6. Funnily enough, the crit line was "Prepare yourself", which I have never heard from Byleth, and is exceptionally funny considering its the most generic crit line in all Fire Emblem

We ended the war, and took down Those Who Slither in the Dark! Why is this still going? [bigger spoilers below] After raiding Shamballa, I thought that this route would officially be over. Every one of my party members thought that this route would be over. Some people were grateful to finally be heading home in peace. Others were ready to be by Byleth's side during her rule of Fodlan. Yet, I had the lingering question of "why is there another battle at the end of the month?" Fortunately, most of my units were properly leveled for the event ahead and I skipped to the end of the month. During that cutscene where Rhea passes her "crown" to Byleth. There was an eerie feeling in the air, mainly thanks to me imagining why the final battle would occur in the first place. Then, Rhea transformed out of her control, and starts yelling bloody murder at everyone. Props to that cutscene for being one of the few in-game cutscenes that looked good in execution. Also, props to this song for being the most memorable Thunder themes I've heard, since I only had to listen to it once. While I still might not have the melody and harmony memorized, the vibe of this really struck a tone with me. This let me know that this is one of those surreal battles. If that alone didn't do it, then Seteth and Flaynn's reactions definitely sold it.

I really like how unlike every other Rain/Thunder track in the game, the Rain version of this is the one with more intense instrumentation while the Thunder version is the more stripped back one, even compared to the difference between normal Rain and Thunder tracks, just being a sad piano piece in a similar vein to some stuff like Gwyn's theme from Dark Souls

The Immaculate One Silver Snow edition puts all other superboss monsters to shame. Every attack Rhea initiates to a unit within range is a Staggering Blow which is strong and strikes 12 spaces within the target's radius. While Umbral Beast's Staggering Blow hits all of the map, it's survivable. Hegemon Edelgard may have near infinite range and can attack twice, but the attacks are not too damaging. The Wind Caller may have extremely high magic, but it's still weak to bows and has thieves to contend with. The Immovable may be near impervious to physical attacks, but it's shell didn't fare well against magic. The Immaculate One Crimson Flower edition may have the power to influence the golems, she doesn't have the ridiculous perma Staggering Blow.

I like that this properly shows how tragic this is. A lot of black eagles fans completely ignore how good of a person rhea was cus waifu edel says shes bad. But rhea is a wonderful person. She constantly takes care of others and fights racism. She stood up for cyril and shamir when they faced prejudice. She let the other church preach different things and only stepped in when they kept trying to assassinate her and launched crusades. She let humanity do what it wanted for the most part as she wanted to avoid war and saw how her race interfering led to their genocide, but she took in refugees like the ashen wolves to help those suffering from awful humans. Unlike those who slither who experimented on humans, or edel who let them so she could use their troops and then back stab them when she was ready, she created a whole new living human like race to try to bring her mother back so she wouldnt have to sacrifice humans and then she couldnt continue once she grew attached to byleths mom and had to be begged to kill her by transplanting her heart to byleths. Her whole goal was just to bring her mom back and let her rule over people again. Shes also the only leader willing to die so byleth can rule and live (cutscene quote last mission pre timeskip). In warriors despite being a refugee herself she focuses on helping other refugees.
