I'm speaking from 10 years in law enforcement in Texas. Citizens having guns and being able to protect themselves really makes a positive difference in two ways. 1) Because of the proliferation of carrying guns in Texas it really does reduce the likelihood of guns being used to victimize the populous. 2) Citizens have stopped crimes from completion keeping them there until we arrive and at other times literally defending themselves in their homes. The problem with the removal of guns from a public safety prospective is that when someone is breaking into your house in the middle of the night and you call 911 with lights and sirens it will take us 10-15 minutes to arrive. That is simply too long when seconds count. Everytime I see people who are victimized it kills me because I can't get there fast enough or they didn't have a way to prevent it or stop it. When citizens take care of themselves it really makes me happy. I do not believe the thought you are more likely to be killed by your own gun. I have never seen that in my 10 years as a cop. I do not believe everyone should get a firearm. If you don't like firearms or are nervous you are better off to find another solution and you are free to choose. Why are people determine to remove the choice of defense for people who desire it? You cannot tell people to be open minded when you yourself are closed minded to other people's beliefs.

Didn't you guys have a pretty well-known massacre like 2-3 months ago? Umm, you do realize if you're in your house and you can hear someone breaking in a knife is better for CQCB. Except you know when people are breaking into your home its more than likely to steal your tv, which isn't really worth anyone dying over with homeowners insurance? You don't believe people kill themselves with their guns? That seems like a stretch as someone that's been on a police force for 10 years. Only within the last five or so years was the 2nd amendment expanded from its original purpose of being used in a "well-regulated militia" to being construed as being used as a defensive weapon. So if you're arguing I'm closed minded because I stick to the original wording of the constitution then so be it.
@charles2007cm6 жыл бұрын
@@jacoblee9455 If someone breaks in with a knife and you have a gun it is highly unlikely they will make it close enough for CQB. I would rather see them flee when the gun is presented rather than have to drop them, but someone breaks in your house with a weapon they are asking for trouble. Sadly people do kill themselves with their guns, but they do so much more frequently with their cars. In my whole life guns have been for self defense 36 years btw.

@TheSMR19692 жыл бұрын
@@prof113 you don't need Training to use a gun, point and shoot, this isn't a combat situation were things will be at a distance, majority of self defense will be close range, accuracy is meaningless it's not increasing your odds though, statistics show that the US has far higher gun crime and mass shootings and overall crime in general than majority of developed nations (most gun crime and mass shootings by far) so this idea that guns make society safer is just nonsense. The solution is the problem, people think we'll criminals have guns so I need to, not realising two things, first it's easy access to guns that give criminals such easy access in the first place as places with strict gun control in Europe have incredibly low gun crime even in organised crime and secondly you're not protecting yourself if the other person has a gun aswell, you're just increasing the chances you both die. So best things for self defense is strict gun control with maybe a tazer or pepper spray, but the research and statistics is pretty clear, if I was in America I'd be armed purely because the majority of others are, but in Europe I don't need to be, and this is reflected in gun crime statistics, so you can support the second amendment all you like but don't try and say that guns make society safer because they very clearly have the opposite effect..

The issue is the culture. NRA appeals to the simplicity of it all. Go out on a weekend and shoot at a human target. They don't teach you to read the room, react to actual dangers, etc. They just paint this vivid image in your head that any stressful situation or show of aggression is life or death. It takes weekly training to be able to effectively react to a stressful situation. Something a large number of gun owners won't do, nor is their proper qualified classes for it. The NRA is just bad for gun owners in general. They overhype ownership and make gun ownership an emotional thing rather than a tool. The day US fixes its gun problem is the day when gun owners actually understand the complexities of self-defense and it's not always drawing for the pistol.

Amazingly put. I can’t stand hearing the NRA’s speeches. It’s fear mongering, and frankly grosses me out. I’m a gun owner, and I support the Second Amendment, but never in my life will I willingly support the NRA as an organization, or take their advice on how to handle situations. To me, all of it seems utterly irresponsible. they make it out to seem like having a gun will put you in control of every situation, no matter your level of training, and they hook new members on their sob lines about protecting your family. The truth is, without that proper training and understanding, you will most likely be shaking in your boots if something ever happens. I just hate gun culture here in the US. It’s basically a dick measuring contest, instead of being seen as a tool. I admit it’s fun to shoot, and it’s actually the main reason I purchased one in the first place. But you can’t sell that end all be all protection facade to people who really end up needing proper training as well.

I'm in another isle and I'm watching him. He comes back up to me and starts asking me more personal details. Do I live alone am I dating someone do I have family and friends nearby and so on. I give him vague or false answers. I try and leave again and he follows me. I stay in the main isles and he stops me to talk. I'm getting increasing worried and know that this person is trying to take me. I block him from getting me with my cart and grab my knife in my pocket. I rush to the front of the grocery store where everyone is and checkout. I try and run to me car lock my doors drive around not going directly home. When I went home I knew o should look up the sexoffender registry. Sure enough I found his face. I thank God everyday in this communist state I at least had something to give me a fighting chance. It doesn't matter that criminals use guns more often than guns are used defensively. What matters is that if you don't have a gun, you cannot defend yourself in that situation, which makes it objectively worse. According to the CDC (link below), there are " 60,000 to 2.5 million defensive gun uses each year." That's potentially 60, 00o to 2.5 million deaths or serious injuries that were PREVENTED because of defensive uses of firearms! With the increase in technology and the ability for people to build things at home easily new kinds of weapons can be made unregulated. Rather than focusing on the tools, we should be focusing on the people who did it. More recent and credible research puts the figure much lower. The NCVS, which examines every crime on a case-by-case basis reports around 65,000 per year. Even that does not equate to 65,000 lives saved because we simply don't have enough information to make that judgement.. *_"NRA probably doesn't care to speak anymore or they lied about trying to contact "_* This is ridiculous. No credible outlet is ever going to do that. The first the NRA would do is call them out on it. It seems that everyone here has the same problem: you simply can't tolerate balanced reporting. Another study estimates there are 1,029,615 DGUs per year “for self-protection or for the protection of property at home, work, or elsewhere” excluding “military service, police work, or work as a security guard,” (within the range of the National Academies’ paper), yielding an estimate of 162,000 cases per year where someone “almost certainly would have been killed” if they “had not used a gun for protection.” (In comparison, there were 11,208 homicide deaths by firearm in the US in 2012. There were a total of 33,636 deaths due to “injury by firearms,” of which the majority were suicides, 21,175.) In short the numbers are still there and they shouldn't be descreditded or disregarded. It should also be noted that many gun violence numbers often include suicide itself. I don't if they don't cover my side by journalism should always stay neutral....im watching this to get a different perspective but when they don't include the other side then how can I possibly consider them credible? Your argument seems to make Sense, but it actually isn‘t that simple. The fact that you have a weapon ready to use will put you in more situations in which you want to use the weapon, or it will escalate situations where a weapon wouldn’t be needed. It will make you think of every situation as a potentially dangerous situation and therefore make more situations potentially dangerous, since other people can own guns as well and think the same way. If you pull a gun on somebody who also has a gun, definitely one if not both of you will die. If neither of you had a gun, the worst case is a fist fight. You will put your own life at a Risk by owning a weapon. Same with knifes: in a knife fight one person dies on the spot and the other one on the way to the hospital. You are in way less risk, if you don’t carry weapons. Think about it. I would like to hear your opinion on this!

@Kyle Mortensen funny you would say that without even knowing the homicide statistics. I see self defense with a firearm as a last resort, especially as a firearm user, hunter, and concealed carry supporter myself. However, as a concealed carry permit holder, it is the carrier's responsibility to be able to keep their wits about them and make a quick decision in a very high pressure moment, and this is something that is very hard to prepare for.

@@konradsmith7904 I very nearly shot someone a few years ago. My production partner and I got into a Mexican standoff with some gang bangers in the middle of nowhere when they tried to rob our rave. Having a gun in no way made me feel safer. The fact that the other guy had a gun is what made me unsafe in the first place. The fact that I felt I may potentially even need a gun made me feel unsafe. We live in a country with deep poverty that's awash in guns. That is what is unsafe. That is a deadly combo. The guys who tried to rob me almost certainly would not have done that if they were economically ok or had any hope for their futures. The gun is an almost irrelevant part of most gun crime. The gun is a tool used to carry out a motivation. Ban the gun and the motivation remains. Solve the motivation and the gun never comes out. I'm not saying changes to gun laws won't make a difference. They will and they are part of the solution. But not remotely the largest part. Both parties use the issue as a way to distract from the kind of proactive solutions that would stop violence in general. Neither side is serious about stopping gun violence. Neither party is willing to admit that the problem is deeper than just guns and will require a comprehensive strategy. There is no such thing as a magic bullet. If you want to solve this problem it's going to involve looking at a lot of stuff and taking on a lot of vested interests. Most of them outside the real of the second amendment.

I dont understand what the point of having a gun is if you keep it locked up in a safe? Where are they getting this idea that guns should be locked up? Are you going to tell the criminal to hold on while you go get your gun from the safe and load it? The logic here does not work?

I get your point, but what if a child to get a hold of it. Yes there is gun locks and other ways to safely store them, but I digress

Safes aren’t that hard to get into if you keep a little one in your room with a handgun you can easily access it for home defense

Its a liberal agenda. Some people view guns as voilent things and some see it as a tool.

Someone please show me where a "gun" went on a killing spree. U can't u no y cuz gu s don't kill people a person has to the trigger in order for it to go off and some guns r even drop safe and for the case of lil kids and owning guns if u teach ur kids about them properly and show them they r not toys then no accidents will happen 1 universal rule wen it comes to guns allows treat the gun as if i t was loaded every if u cleared it and it has no mag or clip in it. So making a law to lock up guns thats just fucking stupid and wen it comes to the mass shootings doesn't have to do with the guns it has to do to the fact of how the people were treated growing up or mental health for example the combine shooting in the 90's they were outsiders who had hardly any friends and were picked on thats y they went on a killing spree the shooting at the church i think it was in Texas had to do with losing his wife and mental health the D.C Sniper was a military trained man who went on a killing spree to kill his ex wife not one i repeat not 1 of those guns grew fucking legs and went on killing sprees so stronger gun laws isn't the answer mental health care is. I live in AZ how of the wild wild west and we love it that way so does Texas.

Blame the gun control lobby for pushing laws that are designed more to harass gun owners than to promote public safety.
