The true story of an American band of misfits using establishment rules to challenge establishment rule, Fear and Loathing in Aspen is based on author and activist Hunter S. Thompson’s 1970 campaign for Sheriff of Aspen, Colorado, which centered around police reform and environmental justice. Written and directed by Bobby Kennedy III and starring Jay Bulger, Cheryl Hines, Amaryllis Fox and Laird Macintosh, this new feature film will be released July 23, 2021 in select theaters nationwide from Shout! Studios.
In 1970, Hunter S. Thompson -- fed up with local pollution problems -- threw his hat into the ring for Sheriff of Aspen, Colorado. His attempt to create a third party based around a new, gentler style of law enforcement entranced the national press and made him an overnight celebrity and hero to the "drop out" generation, who rallied around his "Freak Power" platform with notions of taking first Aspen, and then the world. The only thing capable of holding them back was Thompson himself.

Hunter S. Thompson was probably an even more elaborate character than the fictitious Jim Lahey. Also, it looks like HTS is being depicted at a much younger age than what would be appropriate for John to play a role in.

It’s not a remake and the title is also different. Thompson used “Fear and Loathing” to start a few of his book names. It seems well made for a low budget movie. I’m sure I’ll watch it whenever it’s on a platform of some kind that I don’t have to pay for.

@@BNumbersStation I was just cracking the seal to a Gatorade when in comes Hunter in a jeep Wagoneer. He threw the Jeep into park while it was still moving, making some awful eggbeater noises in the transmission, coming to a halt just inches from the store's outside wall. He gingerly hopped out and put a coin in the public phone there. As I sipped my drink, I overheard Hunter say something like, "Is, Is it, is it in yet, is it in?" I glanced over my shoulder at the jetport, just on the other side of Highway 82, and chuckled. I imagined Hunter anxiously awaiting the touchdown of some pink, precious, shimmering, opalescent product from Peru. When Hunter finished his short call, I intercepted him and asked him if he is the "Doctor". He mumbled, "Uh, yeah, yeah, I guess, sometimes, yeah, sometimes." I explained that I grew up with a newspaper writer in Maine who also hated bureaucrats, wrote with a forked tongue, too. He was also a drinking buddy of my dad. I explained that I wanted Hunter to read some of my family friend's writing. I asked how I could get some of my friend's writing to him. He said, "Come down to the Woody Creek Tavern sometime." Weeks, maybe months went by, but I did eventually go "down valley" to the Tavern. When I walked in, one of the first things I saw was a giant poster on a door on the other side of the room. The poster was of Ed Meese with "MEESE IS A PIG!" printed over his image in big, block letters. I asked if Hunter was about. The bartender said, "Nope, you just missed him. He did a few rails on the bar and then left." I never did see Hunter again, nor get any of my friend's writings to him. I wish I had invited Hunter to that "Thursday night away from the ol' lady blues jam" I was going to in a small studio near the 7/11. I play harmonicas. I don't know if Hunter dug the blues, but I know he would've enjoyed some of the "snacks" the others always had on hand at the jams. That Hawaiian always gave me wicked cottonmouth [natural enemy for harmonica players], hence my purchase of the refreshing antidote, Gatorade.

How is this a remake? Also one could argue the cast of “where the Buffalo roam” should have been in Fear and Loathing in LV. I think the casting is great especially whoever they got for Sheriff Thompson.

"remake" - You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

This film is missing 2 very important elements... *Johnny Depp *Benicio Del Toro Very disappointing they actually made a sequel without those 2... 😩

I mean, if you remember, Oscar wasn’t around Hunter in this time period. Plus I doubt they could’ve afforded Depp
