This whole discourse here is class. The whole thing is about PRETENDING that she is literally violent and PRETENDING she is sectarian -- because she uses normal working class idioms instead of the politican-speak of middle-class England. If David Cameron said, "Honestly, it was all I could do not to biff the chap!" Everyone would just chuckle amicably. No-one could get away with pretending he was serious. But because she uses an ordinary working class Scottish idiom "It was all I could do no' tae put the nut on him," -- thens these ventriloquising creeps get away with pretending to believe that she is literally violent -- in fact, petending that she was Inciting others to violence). They just clubbed her over the head in a masked, coded class-war take-down. What gets me is that it was a fairly working class Labour guy who did it to her: "Look, chaps, here's a nasty little oik who can barely control her chavvy violent impulses!"

jistaface You're introducing an unnecessary England vs Scotland element into this. The only people attacking Black for what she said were fellow Scots - this wasn't a story that made an impact in England. It was middle-Scotland middle-class attitudes (as well as tribal Scottish Labour attitudes) that tried to take her down for this. Not middle England.

(Late reply, but here goes) About Mhairi. Gaelic words, including names, often change the sound at the start of the word depending on the gammatical case. In Gaelic, whether it's pronounced Mari or Vari depends if you are talking to her orif you are talking about her. But you don't do that in English, so people pick one or the other pronunciation.

It's pronounced "Vari". An "mh" in Scottish is pronounced like a "v". Ma-ri would be spelt as "Màiri".

Scotland is a very hostile and un friendly place i have friends who have had to abandon Scotland as a result of intimidation threats and violence. you people believe you are somehow living under occupation and treated like second class people.you think brave heart is documentary about Scottish freedom. the truth is you live on the romantic crap written by Walter Scot and the myth of the brave highlanders. the people who were responsible for the highland clearances were the same people who sold Scotland to England when the Scottish lords bankrupted Scotland then had to go cap in hand to England. Scotland voted for the union you gave up your own country. Scottish people living in England don't get spit at in the streets for showing a Scottish car sticker or football shirt. English people living in Scotland have to try to hide their identity for fear of attack personally i think it is a good idea you cold people have your freeeeeeeeeeeeedom!!! maybe its time for the English to start returning the serve.

i have never bin to Scotland never wanted to my only experiences wi jocks is when i fell over one in Leeds train station he was waiting outside the chemist for his meth the last time Scotland had control of their own finances they lost it in a south american swamp then had to go cap in hand to England your own lords sold Scotland to England you behave as if England has enslaved you unless you haven't noticed their are no English tanks out side your parliament i wold love you to leave the union asap shut the door behind you
