Great doc, lots of really interesting and amazing things about spiders i never knew before. My only criticism would be using sound design with a creepy/scary vibe for spider scenes and then saying at the end that spiders dont deserve their reputation. I really think using a lighter/more playful style of sound design when seeing the spiders do their thing would help encourage the change you want to see (i.e freeing the spider from being generally hated/feared).

My wife is absolutely terrified of spiders and would happily hoover them up. I, on the other hand am scared, but would never knowingly harm them as I remove them. I wonder why we are so scared considering that our upbringings were not influenced by our parents. even watching this documentary sends shivers down my spine. Thank goodness for people like you.
@angela_tarantulas2 ай бұрын
@ thank you 🍀 I think it’s some kind of an „ancient fear“ that’s programmed deep at our brains… spiders don‘t have facial features where we could see what their mood is, we can’t predict their movements … maybe that’s why arachnophobia is a thing around the whole world? Speaking for myself: I feel no fear, but respect for these creatures. Some of them could harm or even k*ll me. Where I live, there are no spiders and scorpions with significant venom. But some of my pets do have or they got some huge fangs, I don’t wanna get inside my finger joints. So, I keep a good distance, try not to stress them and watch them in their terrarium habitats. They’re all fascinating to me, with their bodies based under an exo skeleton, hemolymph instead of blood, how their lungs work, the hydraulical system of their movements… and even if it’s said, that they’re not „intelligent“ - I experience otherwise. They’re showing behavior that would give a scientist work for a lifetime 😃

@@angela_tarantulas Thank you. I think your explanation was spot on and makes a lot of sense. I once thought about getting a jumping spider as a pet, as they are small and pretty, to get me over the fear of spiders. However, if I ever found a tarantula in the house (unlikely in England) I'd move house rather than approach it. 😊

@@Taffy064 I can highly recommend you to keep a jumping spider as a pet! They are so cute and interact with humans. Very intelligent little creatures 🥰 I deeply understand people with arachnophobia and I always try to explain, why humans got this fear. And honestly I don’t know, why some of us got it more than others, it’s individual. But our brains function in a very „old“ and ancient way, that protected us, when we were living out in the wild… same with snakes and other possibly dangerous animals. I‘m in Switzerland, so I don’t get wild tarantulas here, too 😅 I will travel to Mexico, to see my favorite species in their natural habitats. But here at home, I just keep the terrarium doors closed 🤣 If you ever find a tarantula at your home: just put a tupperware container over it and a sturdy carton paper under. Like with a normal spider, just bigger 🤣 I move my biggest tarantulas like this 🤣

I used to work security on the night shift at our local school for the deaf, the campus was built on the side of a rather steep hill. In the spring and summer, when it got quiet at night, and all the students were tucked in their dorms, I'd sit at the base of the hill with my searchlight, looking up the hill with my light shining parallel to the ground. The hillside would be sparkling with tarantula eyes. I'm a typical girl in that most spiders I find icky, but I got so fascinated by our resident tarantulas! I discovered they love to eat crickets, and I despise crickets, so yay for tarantulas and spiders! This documentary also goes a long way to helping people lose a bit of the discomfort of being around spiders.

I get where you are coming from as a spider enthusiast myself, but I feel that this kind of research is justified. The spiders are not hurt by the milking process and recover fully after. While it might look uncomfortable in the moment, this kind of research is vital for advancements that could help solve real-world problems, as well as aid in conservation and deepen our understanding of these animals and ecosystems they inhabit.
@captainn-tgm12 күн бұрын
@AriVenus77 no offense, but I have to call some BS there. Most of the research on spiders, particularly on silk, has nothing to do with understanding the animals and ecosystems in terms of conservation. It's simply about money. You can learn a lot about the animals by watching their behavior without forcing them to be lab experiments. It is already well known that if you want to preserve a species and ecosystem, then force humans to leave them in peace. Companies have been trying for decades to use spiders to find ways to exploit them. The first company that figures out how to synthesize and mass produce various types of spider silk will result in trillions of dollars in profit, with application in textiles, manufacturing, construction, military, and beyond. It would be the greatest invention since the microchip

19:40 That's just not fair! Like spiders don't have a good enough set of weapons. The spitting spider has silk coming out both ends and the silk coming out of its fangs dries and squeezes it's prey and it also has the benefit of being venomous silk as well. That's a super spider. So glad it's not huge

"Whether from their physical appearance or their behaviour, spiders suffer a bad reputation." OK imagine a guy about a foot tall, hiding in the bushes unloading spunk into his hand. We used tho mix corn starch and water to create "Instantly Funk". It's the coolest stuf. As long as yiu kept it moving in your hands by just moving, it was solid. The minute you stopped, it turned to liquid and spilled out of your hands. If you pour it into a bowl and slap the surface really hard, it's solid. Just let your hand relax ache it will slowly sink into the now ,liquid material.

That's not true. Spiders eat certain things because they have special functions. Even if they were giants they wouldn't eat humans because we are too bony. They liquidize their food and drink it from the inside so they like more juicy meals. They more likely would defend themselves by biting us if we threaten them but not to eat us. They don't even want to bite us because they are smart enough to understand they need their venom for hunting for food. I used to have spiders as pets and I researched them for college for my master's degree in advanced science and engineering. Spiders are masters of engineering and hunting. Some types of spiders are social and make great pets because they are like tiny cats.
