Same here. I've been a Joy Division fan since hearing Unknown Pleasures in 1980 at the age of 14, but until a few days ago I'd never even heard of Gillian Gilbert and I just assumed that Hooky was still with the band. I recently listened to Hooky's audiobook about Joy Division and have spent the last few days listening to Peter Hook and The Light's live releases of Joy Division material, and love it.

Strange that, anyone I know who liked Joy Division blended seamlessly into New Order fandom. Movement seemed like a natural musical progression from Closer, it was just missing Ians lyrical prowess.

Post Factory, New Order did lose their relevance and certainly turned into a rock and roll band (comparatively) once Gillian left. It became a bit of a boys club. Gillian coming back was a good move and I would rather have her in the band than Hook if I had to choose between the two. Whatever they do now, they still achieved more than 99% of bands since their inception as Joy Division.

Been a huge fan of both bands since the early 80s, spent loads on bootlegs. To me, Hook's bass was lame ever since about 1986, but then the music as a whole started going downhill then anyway. Don't care about Hook's 'stage presence' - only interested in the music. Obsessed Hook fans just amuse me! I'm glad he left, I wish they'd ditch the bass altogether actually and just use keyboards. I've still got both his solo albums, might go have a listen now, cheers!
@milltimberwhite6 жыл бұрын
pinkstrumpet Barney pretty much removed his bass from the records so no wonder it got lame, can barely hear it on Technique. The newer albums and their takes on the old songs show you where keyboards only gets you, sounds old and dated.

@noleftynorighty457 Жыл бұрын
The fact that he can't properly sing live was what made them particular. However, he's still an archived musician. Used to really really really like New Order when I was a kid, and into young adulthood. Now I'm an old fart. Without a doubt, they shaped my musical taste. The first time I listened to Substance (as an entry door to their work), it transported me into another dimension. Back then internet was nonexistent, so it took me a while to find out they had been the darker JD prior to NO. So later I started to like some "goth" bands , thanks to them. Great times the 80s, everything you discovered back then was through radio, or because of your older sibling's good taste in music.
@2000stephenellis4 жыл бұрын
Simply love New Order ... so down to earth ..esp Stephen ... he`s brilliant .. and so funny .. i watched a documentary recently about how JD started and he was describing the landscape in 70`s Manchester .. yeah, the new single is really Electronic without Johnny Marr. Bernard even said in an interview he barely consulted the band, he just made it himself. Peter Hook added an edge to the music, and obviously his actual bass is an integral part of NO's sound.

@martinharrison15044 жыл бұрын
Republic wasn't a bad record. I just don't think the music they were making at that time and since was right for that moment in the way it was received. Their niche wasn't as appealing as it was in their early years because of other music around at the time that for whatever reason people were more in to. To do with the dynamic of where popular music was at at the time.
