I was seriously considering this telescope, ended up buying a cassegrain instead, i was on the fence for so long, the XX12g is a beautiful looking scope and I'm sure its a solid performer. After watching many assembly videos i became hesitant about a scope that goes together exactly like ikea furniture, i wonder if all those wooden joints will stay firm after years of assembling. Too bad you can't try out scopes before buying, i love the xx12g's presence, it looks amazing, very impressive looking.

Is there a more advanced version of this now? How do you polar align with this? Is there a polar scope?

DSLR's have too much focus travel distance to be compatible, but dedicated astro cameras that have short focus travel will work great!

This Dobsonian Telescope is awesome !! Is there a video which shows a complete setting-up ?

Hi Nicolas, I don't believe we have a setup video for this specific telescope, but I will pass on your request to the video team. The good news is that this telescope is actually fairly easy to put together compared with some, so if you go through the steps in the manual, it shouldn't give you too much trouble. Thanks -Ken Orion Telescopes

Orion Telescopes & Binoculars Hi Ken, thanks for your quick answer. I'am just curious with the unboxing because I'am thinking to order one in France, to complete my SW 102/500 ;-)

Nicolas Dolbeau de la Roche Hi Nicolas, If you click on the "product page" link just below the above video, look for the link called "Product Manuals and Videos" just below the main picture. You can download the manual, and I believe it shows you the contents of all the boxes separately, as well as how to set it up. Thanks, and enjoy the scope if you end up ordering it! -Ken Orion Telescopes

Nicolas Dolbeau de la Roche Hi Nicolas, It's in the box directly above the comment senction. If you don't see it, just go to our website and enter the stock number 10148 into the search field, and the telescopes should come right up. Thanks -Ken Orion Telescopes

Can this thing track stars for as long as I want if I have my DSLR attached to it to take long exposers?
@oriontelescopes
@oriontelescopes 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon, This scope will track the stars, but not accurately enough to do long individual exposures without some type of auotguider correction. Even large EQ mounts require the correction of an autoguider to fix the last bit of residual periodic error and polar misalignment in order to get a good long exposure photograph. Also, since it's an alt-az mount, you'll get field rotation that you won't get with an EQ mount. The bottom line is the dobs are great for visual, and for short exposure shots of the moon and planets, but are not really designed for the long exposures. There is a workaround if you have one of the newer DSLRs that has super high ISO and low noise - you can take many short exposures and stack them up. But you'll also need a camera that has a chip that is closer to the front of the camera than a standard DSLR. Since the dobs aren't designed for long exposures, we optimized the visual aspect of the scope, so the light doesn't come far enough out of the tube to reach focus with a standard DSLR. Thanks -Ken Orion Telescopes

This scope uses an alt-azimuth mount. This means that the motors will constantly be moving in 2 directions to maintain tracking. This will result is a lot of small 'wiggles' that would show up in any long exposures. If you want to consider astrophotography, you will want to look into an equatorial mount with PEC (Periodic Error Correction) and probably use a guide scope as well. The equatorial mount is aligned with the axis of the Earth and only needs to rotate around this one axis to maintain an object in the center of field of view. (Planets and the Moon would be exceptions, but that is too detailed for a short answer). You could do very short exposures using this scope. You would need an adapter to hook your DSLR up to the scope. Pictures of the moon would be great. It is so bright you do not need long exposures. faint deep sky objects would not look good, because tracking is not accurate for long exposures. an adapter looks like the one in the link below. You would want to choose the adapter that works for your camera, and your telescope. www.telescope.com/Orion/Astrophotography/Camera-Adapters-T-Rings/Orion-2-Zero-Profile-Prime-Focus-Camera-Adapter/rc/2160/pc/-1/c/4/sc/62/p/102119.uts

Ken is this the biggest Scope that you can buy a glass Solar Filter for ? Is it possible to get one for the 14" or 16"
@oriontelescopes
@oriontelescopes 9 жыл бұрын
+Roger Spinks Hi Roger, Currently the largest filter we carry will fit this 12" scope, so we don't have one for the 14 or 16. I'm sorry we don't have the product you are looking for. Perhaps an internet search for a custom made solar filter that would fit the outside diameter of those two scopes would yield some results. Thanks -Ken Orion Telescopes
