I know the final stand at the goal line defines this game, but the play of the night is at 17:53. What an individual effort. There's also a video on KZbin where the defenders talk about this moment. Type in "alabama legends reunion goal line stand." You'll be glad you did. Roll Tide!

My dad worked with a guy who had played at Penn State in the 70's. He said that compared to the Bama players,, the PSU players were generally more talented and could dominate their man one-on-one. But the problem was that the Bama teams were in phenomenal condition and so disciplined, and played so effectively a team. "They were just never out of position. You'd think 'My God, there's 20 of them on the field' every play."

You keep dreaming. You were lucky this game wasn't 35-7 like we did Ohio St the year before. We dominate Penn St and only won 14-7.

@user-bu7ko2or8e It seemed to me that Penn State could never beat Alabama in the 70s and early 80s but Alabama could never beat Notre Dame in that same time frame.

Obviously, football has gone through a big change during the past decade, as more teams are running spread offenses and safety measures are limiting contact on defense. Add the success of 7-on-7 camps at the high school level, games like this one are rare. This was an incredibly physical game. Both teams left it on the field. I miss games like this.
@teller1290
@teller1290 3 жыл бұрын
I miss games and the country back then. All the big rules changes that set up "Passball" instead of football" would kick in for NFL that spring; the following spring for college. (Allowing OL to use hands, "greater emphasis" on interference calls; arbitrary, bs 5-yd rule. The first two were incorporated into college the following season in college. Yrs later came silly "tackle box" grounding exception that Fusina SURE would've like to have had in this game. Lately, of course, another tsunami of pro-passing changes.) Bryant once said, "If they keep changing the rules, they goin' to ruin a good game."

Epic goal line stand. First Don McNeal stopped the TD on 2nd down. Then Barry Krauss stuffed Guman on 4th down. The stuff of legend. McNeal and Krauss were actually teammates again in the NFL, both finishing their careers in 1989 playing for the Dolphins.

I came here from Woodlawn and after watching that movie I'm able to look at the loss Alabama (the team I support) took to Clemson at a different perspective. Rather than seeing Clemson getting lucky calls or plays (not saying they did or didn't), I just see that it wasn't in God's plan for Bama to win that game, but rather to use it as a lesson for all of us who thought Alabama's football team was invincible, and to also show us that not everything is going to go the way you want it to, and that you have to make a choice about rather you're going to let that get you down or if you're going to learn from it and use the knowledge you gained to better you're life. And that if you continue to work hard as Tony Nathan did that eventually you're "championship" will come around in one way or another.

Something nobody talks about: Suppose Penn State *had* scored in the 4th quarter. Do you kick or go for two? There were six minutes left, neither team made a field goal, and #3 USC (which had beaten Bama back in Sept) already beat #5 Michigan in the Rose Bowl.

With that amount of time, he'd have kicked the point. sometimes, though, coaches have to go for the win, depending on the circumstances. I remember one year, when Miami played No. 1 Nebraska, Tom Osborne had to go for two, after scoring to try and win the game, in the orange bowl, and came up short. In this case, was plenty of time left

Part of the reason PSU QB kept going down for losses, besides great D by Bama, was that this game thankfully predated the bullshit "tackle box" exception to the intentional grounding penalty. Made passing riskier then.

Alabama deserved the title, but the reason they won was because the Southern California win over Michigan in the Rose Bowl was so questionable, with the margin of victory coming on a touchdown Charles White did not actually score. The refs didn't see the fumble, but the voters in the AP poll certainly saw the replays of it.

The lone Penn State touchdown was not shown in slow motion because he was really out of bounds. Keith always got extremely high pitched excitement in his voice when an Big 10 team made a good yardage play against an SEC team. Not nearly so much when it was the other way around. His last couple of years to announce I would mute the sound.

In support of your point, I noticed right toward end of this video, Keith inserts that USC or Mich (in the Rose Bowl that was played this same evening, later) would have an argument for #1! I just checked. Mich was #5 and USC #3. Not sure why #5 beating #3 jumps #5 over #2 that just beat #1 worse than score indicated. Pretty odd. I guess if USC had completely blown Mich out, maybe USC could talk...but it was a 17-10 game, USC.

@@teller1290 I think Bama's only loss was a 1 point loss to USC. So if they had won their bowl game it's possible. Or they could split the Nat'l Championship because there were 2 different polls back then.
