In my area, those who are grandparents now were putting arsenic and lead on the crops. Arsenic is a great pesticide. Lead is an excellent "sticker." We shouldn't affirm today's choices by modifying those people used in the past. If organic is a good choice, then let it stand on its own.

Great video! I would add that while iron phosphate in slug bait is safe, most also include the ingredient EDTA which is NOT totally safe and should be used with caution (brands like Sluggo). Also, many studies have found that sluggo harms your earthworms. I quoted one study below that basically says if you use products that contain EDTA, your plants will contain a higher concentration of heavy metals in their tissues (NOT good if you plan to eat them). *EDTA is a non-biodegradable chelant that may extract toxic heavy metals from river sediments and permit them to be taken up by plants.*

I’m in Houston Texas so we don’t get that one hard freeze but it did kill a lot but those cold Hardy plants are still going. I got kale going purple kale , green kale , curly kale collards I got a few cabbages , brussels sprouts I wanna make a bed next year for just cabbages I don’t have any dirt or grass in my backyard. Everything is container or raised beds wood ,that we made I’m gonna have to get somebody to make me at least two more. I want to narrow one type just for cabbage. I want one just for potatoes I may make a really long long one bed for potatoes one just for carrots. 🥕

Congrats on year 1! The brassicas are pretty hardy. You would have to do them in a cold frame or low tunnel. But they tend to go the longest and are the first into gardens. Yes, Gary, perfection is the enemy of good. It's unrealistic to aim for perfection, aiming for better is what we should do. I'm restarting and hoping to get a reasonable Fall garden underway here in Australia.(Moving house) Most veg gardens look messy around the switch of seasons but so long as things grow I'm ok with that. With chickweed in the cooler times and purslane in the warmer months, I don't weed them, just keep them under control and let them act as a groundcover. Works ok for me and they are both edible. It is getting to be that time of year again. I have a lot going on in the garden next week. Yesterday I ordered four raised beds for my garden, and they will be delivered tomorrow (Sunday). There goes my plans for building raised beds to replace grow bags in the fall. I'm doing it now. Also, I went to the local Home Depot, and purchased two apple trees, a 7ft tall Honeycrisp, and an 8ft tall Fuji. Rain is in the forecast for the next three days, so they will be going in the ground Tuesday or Wednesday. While walking through the garden, I noticed the leaves on my Nagasaki Cabbage turning yellow. I need to get the raised bed ready for planting, so went to pull it up, and... no roots. There is a hole big enough to stick my arm in where the roots were. Voles!!! As much as I hate using it, I sprinkled critter repellent around the hole and into it. My other option was to go into the woods, catch a bobcat, and somehow convince it to pee in the vole hole. Using the repellent is a lot less painful, and doesn't involve getting stiches. Along with replacing grow bags with raised beds, I'll be preparing my beds for sowing seeds. That means working leaves into the soil, and covering them with a layer of compost. Later, I'll pull out the weeds from my garlic bed. Oh, I just sowed seeds for more seed starts, basil, Fordhook Swiss Chard, Southern Giant Curley Mustard, and Japanese Giant Red Mustard.

The apple trees/fruit trees at HD are a good deal in my opinion and I have been growing with them for 5 years. Pests are pest sadly. I really like your set up! I know it’s a ton of never ending work.. health for the body and mind ! I too have been in yard all day repotting and taking care of my seedlings I have in milk jug greenhouses.. 46 total, half vegetables and half perennial flowers. I amend my soil in the few new raised beds with nice soil and cow manure and it’s resting and burning off before I plant my new seedlings in it! Thank you for all the great information! Thanks for video. Good information. Did plant some greens that laster through winter all were covered freeze cloth. So just place more kale things i like to eat. Planning for Spring. Place some snail baits covered with leaves mulch and have some streaded leaves to break down. Gonna try that alfalfa. You are good Teacher learned a lot. Tried the h2o2 for nats worked with boiling water. Just looking do some things different in garden but not over doing. Take care Happy gardening and seed start.

My garlic went in in november and even with cold temps is 24 inches tall, it got bad rust this year so I contacted a university got recommended a systemic fungicide and I sprayed that and its knocking the rust back after the spray interval passes im going to go back to neem oil because the fungus should be dead as this fungicide really does nearly kill all of it. And try and keep it from coming back. Its kind of funny in that while technically its a chemical fungicide the active ingredient comes from mushrooms so its actually organic in a way.
