Lovely job! I'm on my third coat of poly now. I'm doing 5 coats. I used driftwood planks paper (seems more delicate than butcher). I highly recommend a helper and kneepads.

Unfortunately or fortunately that is one of the realities of this floor. The imperfections make the floor unique. You have to be careful when laying the paper. I had some areas where there were imperfections and the floor was dark. Over time I noticed that the floor lightened up. Even though I waited two days between the stain and the polyurethane I think the paper was still wet from glue and stain. On this floor I used water-based stain and water-based polyurethane. Both dry quickly. I recommend you cover the floor temporarily with paper from the roll for a walkway or stay off of it completely to let it dry for 48 hours and see what happens. If the water rings and the extra glue do not fade then you will need to replace that section carefully.

Girl you really laid this out!!! It is Beautiful I love the Cherry Stain and I will be using it. I wanted wood floors to replace the carpet in my craft room...This is it, I found something inexpensive I am going to use yellow resin paper (hope I can find some). Just a little yellow not much; my craft room is lavender with accents of yellow:) Thanks for the video and inspiration.

+Mz. Queen What did you decide to do? I didn't do a video however I did my craft room first. I used the red resin paper and black cherry stain. It gave me this amazing purple color on the floor. This was my test room and my mistakes were minor. The first thing I learned was that I had to remove everything from the room. I can see where I started and stopped based on my furniture movement.

Good question. Yes the paper overlaps about .25 of an inch, some even more because of the shapes of the paper. Otherwise when it dries you will have gaps between the sheets. The overlap gives texture.

I love this idea. Can you apply it on paint? My floors are painted concrete. About ten years ago, I ripped up my nasty, moldy, mildewy carpet, and painted the floor as temporary measure until I got rich, and could afford hardwood. (I painted it a color I thought would make it look like a Spanish patio, but I ended up with orange floors. Yuck!)

i would paper bag my floor anyday my husband did his workshop but didnt stain it and it still came out looking so good, hes going to do the whole house like this but i do want some stain on the remaining house. The prep work is the really hard part i would say but its so cheap to do the only expensive thing my husband had to buy was the polyurathane and that was 40 something dollars

I initially did this to cover the floor until I installed new carpet. I get so many complements when people come to visit I decided I needed to do the living room. The problem is I have a lot of furniture (heavy) to move. When I moved into my house I took the carpet up in the family room because it was designated as the craft room and painted the floor with concrete paint. I quilt, paint on silk and make all types of crafts so when I decided to rearrange the room and the floor I thought of it as an experiment. I could only do a section at a time because I had a 12 ft. quilting machine to move plus 2 heavy bookcases and a sewing cabinet that is 7 ft. high and made from oak. So I cleared about 1/3 of the space, applied the paper, stain and poly. I waited for it to dry and then moved the furniture and did the next section. I can see the lines of where I completed one section, moved furniture and then the next part. This floor has a purple tint. So I want to empty the living room and do the whole floor so that I don't have different lines. I may have to get a pod and put the furniture in it until I am finished with the whole room. I affirm that your floors are glorious and they make your home look awesome.

How's the floor holding up? I'm doing mine this spring. I have a 87 year old New England Farmhouse, been in MY family 58 years...so its got exposed beams, and a kitchen fireplace...and the tile my mom did is ugly...Mexi-tile in NH?! 🤣 ...so, I'm thinking cork underlayment,, and paper on top. (Under the cork is cold tile) I'm going to assume this wont flex too much...Did you sand in between coats of poly? 🤔 I got some paper that were used in wrapping exotic plants. Enough to 300 sf. Did you use regular Elmer's glue? 1/2 & 1/2?

home depot floor polyurethane about half that price. don't skip the glue i tried it without glue pre staining the paper and it did not work. have glue now going to do it right this time.

Thanks for sharing' Absolutely true. I have seen videos where the person is using the polyurethane instead of glue. Glue and let it dry for a couple of days before staining and putting down the poly. I let it dry for about 4 days, did the stain and let it dry another two days. It has now been almost 6 years and the floor is still wonderful. The only issue is that where there is sunshine the floor has faded somewhat. Also if something sharp is dropped I have to repair.

So You did not seal the concrete prior to laying the paper, right?

no I did not. The Elmer's glue helped to seal them. Some people seal or put down the polyurethane first. It is now a couple of years later and I have had no problems with moisture.

Yes you can. Check your moisture level. You may need to seal with a vapor barrier of polyurethane or kilz. Ask at your paint or hardware store what would be best.

Sorry it took so long to answer. I didn't realize there was a spam folder on comments and that is where you are. Hopefully by now you have seen that the white patchy area has gone away. It usually indicates that there is some water under the polyurethane.

About 3 years ago I did my floor like this too. almost all of it turned out great, but a small spot near the door, we rushed... didn't wait long enough for the water/glue to dry the paper on the floor.. and we put down the poly/epoxy coat too quickly. THAT spot has a cloudy look to it. (next repair time, I will be sure to wait longer)

The surface is still great. I damp mop and occasionally put a coat of liquid shine/wax on it. There is a link in the description for the 4 year update.

I actually balled up the paper opened it flat and put it in the 60-40 mixture of water to glue. I used my wallpaper brush to secure it on the floor and remove the bubbles. I had a wallpaper kit from long ago. You can use a sponge or stiff brush. I had a bucket of clear water and sponge to wipe the excess glue from the top. I wasn't too concerned about what was left on top. I allowed the glue and paper to dry 4 days before I started putting on the polyurethane. By doing this you can fix any loose paper and excess glue. I put down paper in the hallway where I needed to walk. I hope this helps.

@@scraytonify1 I did nothing special. Part is the overlap and part is how the stain was absorbed. I did two coats with a day in between to allow it to dry.

+Michael Moss Hello Michael. Sorry It has taken me so long to answer. The 4 coats have proven to be more than enough. I do not have a lot of traffic nor do I have small children. Please take that into consideration. How thick of a coating do you want? No need to overkill. Because I did not want to sand in between coats, I followed the directions for the polyurethane as closely as possible. I started the first coat at 8 in the morning. 2.5 - 3 hours later I put on the next coat and so on until I got all four coats applied. When the 4th coat was 3 hours old I covered the walking area with brown paper. This is because even though it is dry to the touch it really wasn't ready for traffic. I kept the paper cover for about 4 days. I hope this helps.

I just finished my floors sunday evening and I cannot stand the smell of the polyurethane. Did yours stink? I used minwax satin and it stinks to high heaven. I'm not sure it will ever go away. Did yours sitnk and if so how long did it last?

Beverly Fells Jones I did that the past few days. Thank god I don’t live in the place cause it was unbearable to me. However, today it was 50 outside and I cranked the heat up to 100 and opened several windows with a fan in one drawing air out. It is sooo much better today. Next time I do this I will use water based poly. The oil based is just so nasty. I had no clue there was a major difference. I just grabbed the one that said fast drying. I should have researched a little more. Haha

I had one catch from moving a heavy piece of furniture and not being as careful. It will scratch like a wood floor. I just touched it up with a light touch of stain and a coat of polyurethane.

in my opinion you would have to sand the floor to prepare a good adhesive surface. This would be like covering wallpaper. is there something wrong with the current floor? Are there imperfections? is there lifting? Would it be difficult for you to remove the current flooring and clean the base? there is a lot to consider.
