This is a great video! Love hearing these view points. Confirms what I've had to figure out on my own.

Pom pom squad two deep on endline... before tip off I informed coach of the squad to move her squad to the side line bleacher...What!!! Your the only Ref that has brought this to my attention... off the endline for safety and allowing me my work space... Coach there's no discussion here when it comes to student safety much less my own...

OK for partner to help partner out such as in the first situation. Again, as pointed out, we don't see the context before the warning. There is a side reference to a 'weak' official. Maybe the referee is inexperienced - vs. weak. As a fairly new official who can be hesitant to T someone up because I lack the experience to know when a coach has crossed that line. So, there is an appreciation for my experienced partner getting involved so the coach understands this is a crew and we have each others backs.

As a coach, would love to hear a discussion on the art of talking to refs during the game. Generally discussing the dos and don'ts, best / preferred approach (does everything need to be in the form of a question or can observations be stated etc ). Just trying to improve as a coach and communication with refs is critical.

Great idea. Maybe we’ll try to formulate a future meeting on that premise.

I've officiated basketball for 8 years at the High School level. I never understand what coaches mean when they say they want to "talk to the refs" or "be able to communicate with the refs". Communicate about what???? I really don't understand what there is to talk about? There are some things I will do, like I will watch a particular player if a coach says that player is "doing something" illegal. I will explain a rule, if asked by a coach. I will prepare to grant a timeout in a particular situation, if asked. But when you make yourself too available, it becomes nothing more than a question and answer session about your calls or the coach is working to get an advantage for later or the coach is trying to get you to change how you are calling the game. Rarely are they just asking a question. They are questioning your judgement in most cases. Trying to explain judgement calls will only escalate into something bad or cause you to lose focus or get in your feelings, if you go back and forth with a coach. The only thing that works for me is a short response (i.e., "he was legal", "he kept his pivot", "incidental contact") and move on and get away from him/her. Trying to explain judgement calls to a coach DOES NOT WORK for me. It took about 5 painful years to figure this out and it's improved my officiating and confidence.

@@BowmanWilliams I appreciate your perspective. I typically shy away from talking to refs during the game as I know I'll never get a call changed. However, there are situations when there is a sincere need to communicate to a ref. I have had situations in which they didn't place the ball properly after a violation / timeout and the play started only to be called back ( if I'm lucky or unlucky depending on who is impacted). I hesitate to yell out that it's wrong as it might create an issue. There are times when refs make a call and just move in but they never announced the call clearly or made a clear signal. How do you ask for clarification without stopping the game or calling a timeout. In ref may be doing a great job and their partner is an absolute mess. How do you get their attention to fix that? Many other instances that need a quick communication but how / when do you do it without pissing off the ref?

1st video, where partner steps in and gives a warning, it's a partner taking up for his crew. I've done that as the R on a crew.
